T-Pain is opening up about a dark time in his life that all started with, of all things, Auto-Tune.

In an exclusive clip from the forthcoming Netflix series This Is Pop, the singer and rapper reveals that he fell into a depression after fellow musician Usher told him he "f‑‑‑ed up music."

In the video above, he recalls, "Usher was my friend. I really respect Usher. And he said, 'I'm gonna tell you something, man. You kinda f‑‑‑ed up music.'"
The Masked Singer season 1 winner (we miss you, Monster!) says he thought Usher was joking at first, so he laughed. "And then he was like, 'Yeah man you really f‑‑‑ed up music for real singers,'" he recalls. "I was like, 'What did I do? I came out and I used Auto-Tune.' He was like, 'Yeah, you f‑‑‑ed it up.' I'm like, 'But I used it, I didn't tell everybody else to start using it.'"

He continues, "That is the very moment, and I don't even think I realized this for a long time, but that's the very moment that started a four-year depression for me."

This Is Pop is an eight-part series exploring untold stories from some of the biggest moments in pop music history. In addition to T-Pain, it features interviews with ABBA'S Benny Andersson, Shania Twain, Brandi Carlile, Chuck D, Babyface, Orville Peck, Hozier, members of Boys II Men, Backstreet Boys, Blur, and many more.

The series will be released in full June 22.

Usher Allegedly Woke T-Pain Up So He Could Say Mean Stuff to Him on a Plane
By Bethy Squires

Okay, so Usher didn’t tip strippers with fake Ush Bucks, but he did allegedly say something to T-Pain that began a four-year depressive episode. Usher is on notice! In a clip from Netflix’s This Is Pop, T-Pain describes the time Usher woke him up on a flight to tell him that he “fucked up” music. Like, the whole art form.

The pair were flying to the 2013 BET Awards. T-Pain was asleep in first class. “I was awakened by the flight attendant,” T-Pain says in the clip, “She said ‘Usher would like to talk to you in the back.’” T-Pain made his way the back of the plane, where Usher told him that he had “fucked up” music for “real singers,” presumably referring to T-Pain’s exaggerated used of Autotune. “I don’t even think I realized this for a long time,” he says, “but that’s the very moment that started a four-year depression for me.”

Alright Usher, a few notes. One: why make a flight attendant wake T-Pain up to tell him mean shit? This couldn’t wait? Two: people were using Autotune before T-Pain. If anything, it was more insidious and fucked up for “real singers,” since software was digitally making everyone sound pitch perfect. T-Pain (and Cher before him) blew the door wide open on that extremely common practice. Three: did T-Pain sell Autotune to music producers? No. The copycats are the copycats fault, sir. Not T-Pain.

Anyway, stan T-Pain. Watch this cute music video he and Classixx did a while back, remaking The Smiths’ video for “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before.”

Every “rapper” now doesn’t rap they auto tune harmonize like bitches I hate it. Why ain’t 50 cent going after like 99% of these bitch ass sing rappers? Everybody sounds the same. I was listening to Pandora and when Young Dolph came on after a sea of whining ass pussy harmonizing rappers it was music to my ears now I only listen to Dolph and Griselda .

He's more upset at Usher than Jay-Z? Didn't Jay-Z basically kill his gimmic?

Secondly I'd think Usher should take aim at all these other R&B singers who are either whiny, overly emo weirdos are wanna-be mumble rappers. Silk Sonic's popularity after one sing is quite telling. T-Pain is getting too much blame, when dude should have went by the wayside with other mid 200s acts like Pretty Ricky and shit.

Got some YouTube links?

As a singer I hate the use of Auto-Tune. It's just not good music to me. However, in the era we live they don't want or like good music so the T-Pain music is considered music. Low standards. He didn't ruin music but what he does isn't really considered music to me

Low Standards is right. Drake uses auto tune in everything he does and I’ve heard people say he’s a genius. I laugh when I hear that shit.

Nigga is crying over something Usher said. Man up and stop crying like a bitch.
It would be like shaking the hand of your idol and them looking at you and saying "Nikka I don't know you, I'm not shaking your broke boi hand."

That would do something to your mental and T-Pain was a young dude so I get it.
