Edgar Wright to Direct Adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Running Man’ for Paramount

By Rebecca Rubin

Peter Yang for Variety
Edgar Wright has been tapped to direct “The Running Man” for Paramount Pictures, an adaptation of Stephen King’s dystopian horror novel.
“The Running Man,” published in 1982, was originally written under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman. The story takes place in the United States in the year 2025, which sees the economy in ruins and violence dramatically escalating. The book was loosely adapted into a 1987 film that was directed by Paul Michael Glaser and featured Arnold Schwarzenegger. The upcoming version is expected to stay more faithful to the source material. The cast has not been set yet.
Michael Bacall penned the script from a story he co-wrote with Wright. Simon Kinberg (“X-Men,” “Dark Phoenix”) and Audrey Chon will produce the film for Genre Films, as will Nira Park for Wright’s company Complete Fiction.

King’s novels, in genres ranging from horror and sci-fi to crime and fantasy, have been rich material for films and television shows. Among the most successful have been “Carrie,” “The Shining,” “It” and the sequel “It: Chapter Two.” Paramount recently adapted “Pet Semetary,” based on King’s 1983 book.
Wright, whose resume includes “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and “Baby Driver,” recently debuted his music documentary “The Sparks Brothers” at the virtual Sundance Film Festival. In her review for Variety, Jessica Kiang praised the documentary and called it a “fabulous tribute” to the Sparks, “the band that has been the Next Big Thing for 50-odd (very odd) years.”
Wright’s latest movie, the psychological thriller “Last Night in Soho,” stars Anya-Taylor Joy, Thomasin McKenzie and Matt Smith. It is scheduled to debut later this year.
Wright, Bacall and Park are repped by CAA.
Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

I need to see the original one....

It’s funny I had a concept from decades ago called the running game.. it was a similar idea to running man + victory (puffy/big/busta vid).. it would be a reality tv show but out in public where diff groups would chase after criminals and kill them for a monthly pay-per-view event on air.. basically a real live human hunting show for criminals... put a collar around their neck that can explode.. give criminals a 72 hr period To reach a certain destination, if they do they win and they get a million dollars plus get off on all charges... show been on for over a decade and the highest rated payperview show ever.. but ratings start slipping due to criminals always dying fast.. so the next particular event the producers of the show decide to make it more interactive and allow the audience to join in the hunt and for every criminal they kill they get a reward(which create various vigilante through movie).. in this particular show you meet a bunch of diff criminals but 1 person in particular is guilty of a crime he accidentally commits(so he’s not all the way bad)..through his lense as well as other interesting criminals you watch how this event goes down with all kinda twist and turns... I’ll just leave it right there..I left a bunch of other stuff just in case somebody want to steal idea

I imagined Howie Mandel taking Richard Dawson's place in my vision of a remake, this could be cool since they are going with the original material.

Uh no, some things need to be left alone. They should have left Conan alone, they should have left Terminator without Arnold in it alone, they should have left Total Recall alone, they should have left Predator alone.
