Joe Biden is now POTUS

Trump is in huge trouble especially with the bank issue that is popping up today well yesterday but I will take the $2000 if I qualify but Trump still have to get out of office on the January 20th 2021 plus he is still a racist asshole. People in Georgia please vote in the Georgia election if you haven’t.

This is interesting. Dem and Rep voters are pissed at the $600 checks, Trump is for $2000 and Pelosi called his bluff quickly, AOC and Co. already wrote the amendment and Schumer backs it. Mitch is now forced to cave or play Grinch and cost them the GA Senate seats. Gotta love it.

Well so far since 2015 Mitch aint gave a fuck about people's feelings. So we shall see if he continues on that path (which I think he will) or be forced to come out of his turtle shell.

Let him stay on brand and hand the Senate to the Dems. I'm good with that.
Personally I don't think this will move the needle on who controls the senate. The two races in Georgia will determine that and my understanding is that the turnout there is already at full capacity.

If the general election is any indicator, mad Repubs voted on the actual election day. That's 2 weeks away. I think there's room for this to weigh on it.

I'm just saying that people are either going to vote or not vote. What Mitch does I believe will not move the needle either way regardless of what he does or doesn't do. There has already been enough put out there to make people get out an vote and this issue is no different.

I hear you. We'll see how it shakes out.

Will the two Georgia senators vote no on the 2k

Remains to be seen. I'm pretty sure they've opposed every other stimulus offering before it though. Now that Trump said it, maybe not. But the damage is being done right now while the message is that the only thing between people in need and $2k is Mitch and his Senate Repubs.

Does $2,000 Really Equal $2,000?

Short answer: No

It’s important to remember that while both Canadian Dollars (CAD) and United States Dollars (USD) are represented by the same dollar sign ($), the two currencies are not equal. As of April 17, 2020, one US Dollar is roughly equal to 1.4 Canadian Dollars. To start, we need to create an apples-to-apples comparison of the two payments. The Canadian stimulus payments of 2,000 CAD would equate to 1,400 USD.

The more accurate question, therefore, should be: Are Canada’s 1,400 USD stimulus payments more generous than the United States’ 1,200 USD payment?

Do The Stimulus Payments Cover The Same Time Period?

Short answer: No.

The U.S. and Canadian stimulus payments don’t cover equivalent time periods. While the U.S. legislation calls for a single stimulus check to be sent to individuals, Canada’s will pay individuals for the next four months.

If we want to look at aggregate stimulus payments to individuals, we should be comparing 1,200 USD for Americans who qualify, and 5,600 USD for Canadians who qualify (1,400 USD per month, multiplied by 4 months = 5,600 USD).

The running total still seems to favor the Canadians, but not so fast.

Should We Factor In Other Payment Types?

There are many additional payment types or social safety net dimensions that one may want to include, but one of the most important is augmented unemployment benefits. The U.S. stimulus bill included provisions to provide a federally funded weekly pay boost for those who are unemployed. Individuals would receive $600 per week for up to four months (i.e., 16 weeks) and this would be incremental to any payments they already receive from state unemployment insurance. There is no corresponding incremental unemployment boost in Canada’s stimulus package.

Including this $600 per week payment meaningfully alters the outcome of our comparison. In the U.S., it would mean that an individual could receive 9,600 USD in additional stimulus benefits ($600 per week multiplied by 16 weeks = 9,600 USD).

What’s The Final Verdict?

Over the next four months, Canadians who qualify would receive 5,600 USD in stimulus payments while Americans who qualify would receive 10,800 USD in stimulus payments.

Are There Other Dimensions To Consider?

Short answer: Probably

There are other nuances that could be captured in the comparison, including ones that may be harder to quantify or will depend on individuals specific circumstances.

For example, the U.S. stimulus bill includes additional $500 payments for children under the age of 17, while Canada’s legislation provides $300 CAD per child (214 USD). The 1,200 USD stimulus checks disbursed in the U.S., have income-based qualifications, while Canada payments focus more on changing circumstances (e.g., those who have been laid off, quarantined, or taking care of a family member with COVID-19). Other differences in policies, such as healthcare costs, may also affect the comparison. For example, “Canada's existing social safety net is significantly more robust than the US's. Perhaps most notably, the country has a universal single-payer healthcare system which ensures all Canadians have access to coronavirus testing and treatment free of charge.”

What’s The Conclusion?

While tempting to compare headline figures and conclude that Canada is doing more, a more careful analysis reveals that the U.S. stimulus plan may be more generous, at least on a relative basis. Is 10,800 USD disbursed over four months enough for an American to survive during these difficult times? That’s a question for another article.
