"While Batman movies often prioritize the Dark Knight's gadgets and combat skills over his reputation as "the world’s greatest detective," Jeffrey Wright has revealed that The Batman will give this attribute some proper attention.
Wright, who plays the newest version of longtime Batman ally Commissioner James Gordon, was recently interviewed by The Jess Cagle Show for SiriusXM about The Batman's production. The Westworld actor revealed that one of the last scenes he shot on March 13 before the coronavirus halted production was not only featured in the DC FanDome trailer, but also made the cast "really stoked about what we were doing."
Wright singled out the detective elements of Reeves' script, saying, "When I read the script I said to myself 'yeah this is on it' because as you describe about Westworld, this show is very much about mystery, Batman the series. You go back to the original, it's DC it's Detective Comics and the script is really beholden to that, beholden to this idea that Batman is the world’s greatest detective."
On the nature of Gordon's role, Wright brought up Gary Oldman's performance in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, since Wright said that Oldman described Gordon as having "something of a Watson to him." Wright went on to say, "The script honors that and it also set a tone that was very clear, and a tone that has been captured in that trailer."
Wright's Gordon appeared for a sizable portion of The Batman's trailer, most notably investigating clues at a murder scene alongside Batman (Robert Pattinson) that appears to be the work of the Riddler (Paul Dano). The trailer implies a much larger mystery involving other criminals like Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and the Penguin (Colin Farrell), as well as some tension between the GCPD and Batman, who doesn't appear to have Gotham's full trust yet.
The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves and co-written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone and Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson. The Batman is set to be released in theaters on Oct. 1, 2021."

but we have seen in recent years how shows get picked up for an extra season BEFORE they even AIR an episode
