In plain sight. When they pulled over to the side of the road before the sheriff pulled up behind them, Atticus joked around about the noise he and Letitia heard in the woods. Atticus describes the beasts in the woods exactly as they eventually turned out to be.... i wonder if he's got some types of "powers" or is a visionary in some respects.
