Trump’s likely to lose this election due to a lot of factors, but the danger was that Biden would pick a weak candidate for Vice President, and alienate voters who were hoping for someone a little stronger.
Kamala Harris is likely the best candidate that Biden could have chosen. Elizabeth Warren would have been interesting, but she wouldn’t bring as much to the table as Harris will do now.
It’s worth noting: consider Trump’s VP, Mike Pence. He’s been largely useless, a sycophantic yes man that has done little to bring substance or strength to the Trump administration. He’s not stood up to Trump, not challenged him to improve as President, and he’s simply fed into the conspiracy theories and lies that have characterised Trump’s presidency. A good Vice President should make your administration better. Pence has failed to do that.
Harris has proven that she’s tough, intelligent, principled, and as we saw during the Democratic debates, more than happy to challenge Biden on the issues, and to do so respectfully but firmly. Biden needs that: a foil that will push him as well as a partner that will back him. In the absence of Barack Obama, who better to do that than Kamala Harris?
We also have to remember that Biden’s Vice President will be the future President of the United States when Biden’s time in office comes to an end. This is someone who will work with him now and take his place later - probably in 2024 (or perhaps 2028), when Biden has finished reversing the damage of the Trump Administration, and is ready to step aside for a younger and more progressive President to take the reins. Biden’s chosen someone who would make a great President, particularly with a little time in the second seat, learning from a man who has more experience of the office than anyone other than a former President.
So…yeah, Trump’s toast. Biden’s more presidential in his sleep than Trump has managed while being awake, and Harris is the sort of woman I could fully seeing becoming President in a few years. She’ll slap Pence around during the debates, bring her intelligence, compassion and toughness to the Biden campaign and administration, and ultimately show the country what a solid POTUS/vPOTUS team can look like.
We haven’t seen one of those in the past four years. It’s about time.

What Trump actually hears: “Schools”.
Trump has a canned talking point for the word “schools”. So, he answers: “Schools gotta open. Americans want their kids in schools. People commit suicide when their kids don't go to school… blah blah blah blah.”
