RJJ was so fucking quick. Floyd had impeccable defense.

In Jones' prime, his defense was better than Floyd's IMO. He went for YEARS without losing rounds and had stretches of fights without getting hit flush at all. Floyd in his prime had great defense but still got touched way too much by limited guys like Corley and Emmanuel Augustus. Floyd was great but it's hard to pick anyone against a prime RJJ unless you go to the heavyweights.

Wrong, Mayweather has fought nobody like Jones while Jones has fought and beaten two Hall Of Fame defensive fighters in Hopkins and Toney.

Mosley, Pacquiao, and Alvarez are three shoo-in HOF punchers. Granted Pac is not exactly like Roy, but he had (still has) plenty of hand & foot speed, awkward punch angles, and crazy power. If Hopkins in your opinion compares to Floyd, then Pac fits too.

Right! Only person who thought the fight shouldn't have been stopped was him lol

See man that's fucking boxing right there!! Yea yea i know Floyd is a great this and that but his fights be boring as fuck. If you're not at a fight party you're guaranteed to doze off on it

Roy also was the king of throwing punches from awkward angles. There was no figuring him out for a while. He didn't really work from behind the jab (which was part of his downfall once he lost that step), so folks could never figure out what was coming and from where?

This shit right here was just sickening.

Huh?? they fought in '93 both came on the scene around '88... B-Hop was a title holder when RJJ took it from him.... how much more Prime can he get? ...IJS

BHop really hit his stride later on in his career. That L absolutely counts against RJJ though. Wasnt like he just came into the sport.

I remember watching this fight. Roy had a knack for making average fighters look terrible. I was surprised when I saw Tarver drop him. And then shortly after a lesser fighter than Tarver put him on the mat. Most boxers didn’t want to take chances against him because of his counterpunching speed. IMO that was the key to his defense.

Glen Johnson. But Glen also beat Tarver, if that's who you are referring to.

Yea I think so. Didn’t know he beat Tarver. Tarver seemed like he had a personal beef with Roy. Called him out in the ring prior to the bell ringing. “Do you have any excuses tonight Roy!?” With the microphone on.

Thats because he says Roy had been avoiding him for a long time....

nah....

i would say RJJ didnt have much defense at all....his defense was how much faster he was than everyone else....once that was gone...it was a wrap

to me...FM's defense got better the older he got and lost a step....

RJJ was just a hell of an athlete...

RJJ would not have gotten as far as he did by being "just a hell of an athlete". Just like Michael Jordan, a high level of skill was combined with great athletic ability. You can't just have great athletic ability with no skills and become a legend in a sport. One more example, Yuriorkis Gamboa was probably just as physically gifted as RJJ but without the technique and they had very different careers.

Also, my definition of defense is basically "not getting hit". If RJJ barely got hit while winning world titles for over ten years, he had GREAT defense. Some guys use a cross arm defense, some guys use their legs, some guys shoulder roll, some guys like to duck and parry. It's all defense with a common objective of not getting hit.

If you don't get hit, you have great defense, period.

Paq was juiceless/no roids, Alvarez is slow, “Compared to Floyd” and Mosley wasn’t as great as Roy was in his prime. Shane was nice, but he wasn’t Roy.

To each their own. If they were the same weight, same height, I'll take Floyd ALL DAY.

Floyd was a Maestro in the ring.

Floyd was nice too!

I think unfortunately some of us are remembering Floyd when he was older which is making us forget his years when he truly attacked!

TI don't get into that nigga life or the women he fucking. In the ring he's thinking at all times. Roy was 20 times more athletic than Floyd. Floyd is the best in my opinion because of his mind. You can't rattle him to get him out his game and he's smart enough to peep your game. By the time you catch up fights over.

Floyd said Mosley hit him the hardest.... an on the decline Mosley. A in his prime RJJ even at catch weight might've given Floyd his first KO, he definitely would have dropped him.

Floyd never fought those guys when they were in their primes and close to touching RJJ's greatness.

Toney is one of the forefathers of Floyd's defense... Roy beat him and scored the second and last knockdown of toneys career.

That's a opinion I'm not mad at.

My only issues with the Gotti fight is, the ref said stop punching, cuz Gotti's head was low. Floyd popped him again, Arturo backs up and looks at the ref like "yo, you said stop punching." And while he's looking away Floyd pops him again....

One...that shot didn't really even knock him down (lack of power)...and 2, who's to say how much damage / influence that shot had on the rest of the fight.

I will not sit here and say Floyd lacks the overall power to knock mfkrs out. He did that....but at a serious cost to himself. Every knockout was damn near a broken hand for him. RJJ would knock mfkrs out and would go to the clubs afterward. Hell RJJ was doing mini concerts before the fight and would go on to be aggressive and offensively dominate his fights...

Roy in his prime was just different man....he had defense, but he also had offense and great ring IQ... the chicken dance punch to KO..... the wimdmill.... mfkr was performing the And 1 of boxing

Floyd beat the shit out Gatti cut it out.
Roy was Iverson to me once he lost the first step he was done.

Without the mind the body weight don't mean nothing. Floyd out think dudes in the ring, what's the saying 90 percent of the game is mental? Floyd batting a 1000 mentally. Didn't say he could spell or father of the year in the ring tho total Genius.

Zab was quick like Jones though. Not as quick though.

Zab was actually faster than Floyd. But Floyd adjusted to neutralize Zabs right hand that was fucking him up and eventually edge out his victory against Zab.

Not just a helluva athlete with speed but he got that far by fighting plenty of bums lol

I was going to say the same shit.

RJJ was like a cotdamn X-man. Inhuman quickness. Just a fucking cheat code. When he lost his quickness, it was like when superman became human in part 2.

Cats like Mayweather, Hopkins, and Toney box forever because they are elite athletes who have EXCELLENT technique. RJJ wasn't just an elite athlete, he exhibited superhuman reflexes an quickness. It was like if the Flash took up boxing. Flash ain't got to have great technique to make others look average. :smh:
