Shortly before FX was set to begin production on Y, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of the critically acclaimed comic series Y: The Last Man, showrunners Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal announced they were departing the project.
“Sad news for fans of Y: The Last Man today. FX has decided not to move forward with our series in its current form,” Croal wrote in a statement signed by her and Green. After thanking the writers, producers, and cast members involved in the show, Croal’s statement continued, “We hoped to reward their talent and their trust not just with success but with a show that had something to say, in a time when things must be said. As Y fans ourselves, we hope the future allows just that.”
Some fans of the property took this unexpected tweet as an indication that FX had canceled Y, but the statement’s wording was slightly misleading. FX has confirmed to EW that the network is moving forward with Y, but that Green and Croal were moving on “due to creative differences with the network.” The search for a new showrunner is now underway.

It's a man's world... until it isn't.
FX has released the first teaser for Y: The Last Man, the upcoming adaptation of the acclaimed comics series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. The teaser presents the series premise — in which (almost) every male mammal on the planet suddenly dies — in a clever way that exposes the current gender inequality in our society.
The teaser paints an apocalyptic scenario in which "95% of all airline pilots," "92% of Fortune CEOs," and "85% of government officials" suddenly die. These numbers show us how the world’s transport, economy, and social management would crumble should all men (but one) suddenly disappear. This is also a clever nod to gender inequality in the present day. By exposing these numbers, the teaser wants to remind us that if women occupied the same positions as men in a balanced way, the impact of half the Earth’s population vanishing could be less destructive. As the original comic book series never shied away from social commentary, the teaser shows the TV adaptation will update the source material to incorporate more contemporary discussions.

After leaving patient fans waiting through years of development, Y: The Last Man is finally premiering. A new trailer reveals a fall release date for the anxiously awaited FX series.
Y: The Last Man graced our list of the most anticipated TV shows of 2021 and at long last, the series is finally arriving on September 13th. Eliza Clark will helm the series, which is adapted from the long-running science fiction comic book that’s captivated readers since 2002.
The much-delayed series has an incredible cast (including Diane Lane, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, and that last man himself, Barry Keoghan) and will find a home on FX, a network known for its creative and strange genre shows. However, Y: The Last Man will be exclusively streaming on FX on Hulu, as the brand’s streaming partner. (Also of note, even after leadership reshuffling during the extended period of production, the show still boasts a female leader behind the scenes in Clark.)
Y: The Last Man follows Yorick (Keoghan) and the remaining women left behind after an Event wipes out all with a Y-chromosome. Setting off with a dark secret and companionship in the form of a monkey, Y is determined to stay alive. The series will dive into the aftermath of the Event, and the survivors left grappling with the identities they clung to before.

Few pop culture projects have devoted more time, energy, and resources—across more than a decade of production time—into trying to convince us that they exist than the Y: The Last Man adaptation. Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerrera’s award-winning graphic novel, about a world in which all the men save one drop dead, has deployed every trick in the book to try to get us onboard with the idea that someone might actually make a film or TV series out of it: Production announcements, high-profile castings, and even a series commitment from FX On Hulu to make a show out of the comic. It’s an amazing effort just to try to trick us into thinking this thing has been made, a feat of prestidigitation as elaborate and impressive as any of the escape tricks that protagonist Yorick Brown prides himself on performing in the book.
Now FX has launched its latest stunt in support of this “new television show,” scheduled to “debut” on “September” “13": An actual, bona fide teaser trailer for the series, which is set to star Ben Schnetzer as Yorick, and Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Diana Bang, and Olivia Thirlby as some of the many, many women he suddenly finds himself surrounded by in the wake of the semi-apocalypse.
Not that you’d know that from the trailer, though, which maintains the illusion that the series has actually been filmed by refusing to show us even a second of footage, instead opting for a graphic presentation laying out the basic premise. (Which, again: All the men are now extremely dead.) Meanwhile, James Brown croons about it being “A Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” which, not so much, anymore. (There’s also some fun chromosome art, in case the whole “Y” thing hadn’t already leapt out at the science nerds in the audience.)
Anyway: Kudos to all the pranksters and impractical jokers involved in this one. What’s next: Some actual shots of Schnetzer walking among the corpses of the planet’s men? An actual broadcast of full episodes of the “show”? A second season renewal? We swear, the lengths these folks will go to to get a laugh.
