HBO Series: Watchmen (2019) (drops 10/20/19) Thread

Oh no, say it ain't so Looking Glass, so it ain't so.
Spoiler tag fam
I was referring to the hero video he was watching.

Only on BGOL would the "Oh no, say it ain't so" be for Looking Glass in that episode.

Edited to add: I definitely got the impression he was looking at gay superhero porn but a podcast on the show said that was the American Hero Story that has been shown in several episodes and the beginning of episode 6 seems to confirm that.

In all seriousness?

If all these ados folk dissing haitians and immigrants and backing trump would all be thrown out?

And yall hired hbo and the creators of this show to market the reparations reform on your behalf?

You'd get the biggest voter turn out in support since obama first election.

Cause i am so EXTRA hyped for all my brothers and sisters to get down with this.

LOL, you'd get one season of a cancelled show if you dropped the heroes and pushed reparations harder.

Total viewing for the first episode is now approaching 5 million viewers, according HBO. According to premium cabler, the premiere marked the strongest debut performance for a series on its digital platforms since the series premiere of “Westworld” in 2016.
For its third straight week, HBO's Watchmen continues to drop in ratings and loses massive amounts of viewers, this time with over 100K fans choosing not to tune in.
What is notable about week 3 is that the 100K loss is for live viewership; the numbers across all HBO platforms have yet to come in, so the drop could even be more significant.
Sunday's episode 3 of Watchmen had only 648k viewers tuning in, a drop of over 15% from week two's 765k, which was down from week one's high of 799k.
Likewise, its ratings in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 age demographic dropped to a .19, down 24% from the previous week's .25, which was the same as week one.
There is now the question if the series will be canceled and renewed for a Season 2 due to the low ratings and viewer numbers.

I'm enjoying it but it is largely preaching to the choir in terms of audience. When I typed in "Watchmen Ra" to pull up ratings, "Watchmen Race Baiting" was a top suggestion.

Maybe it will be persuasive for the next generation-- teens and younger in the audience. But nobody of voting age is being converted, even with the superhero premise to lure them in. So a straight reparations show would be a huge dud.

Maybe ratings drop because people only signed up for HBO to get a free offer. I know I did. After that, I downloaded the show.

Haven't had a chance to go through the thread so apologies if it's been mentioned, but these guys bring up a good point: Hooded Justice stopped The Comedian from raping Laurie's mom, maybe her gratitude will play out in some way?

Im glad I didnt read the novel.. this way I can just enjoy this for what it is, rather than comparing every fuckin scene to the book...

People keep saying this or that posting details from the comic/movie is spoilers.

It's like saying you're glad you didn't watch Godfather before Godfather II or that watching Friday After Next is better without watching Friday because you have no basis for comparison. Some comparison is natural (Where's Smokey?) but that knowledge doesn't spoil anything, it sets the stage and makes what you're viewing a lot better.

The Looking Glass flashback was much better if you know the general backstory instead of just learning it from his specific perspective.

Are you saying they had a free offer around this show in particular?

I think common sense says that the impact would be negligible. You don't go from highest rated debut in years to speculation of cancellation based on free trial sign-ups.

Ratings are such an archaic metric of measuring popularity. I've watched this entire series via pirate streams. My viewership won't show up in the ratings, and I know I'm far from alone in that.

Your point is somewhat valid and I would not arguing that pirating perfectly evens out in terms of effect on every show but I think ratings are not at all obsolete. It's not a perfect indicator but it's indicative of something.

Like the fact that the ratings system picked up a recent record for number of viewers for the first episode and a decline in subsequent ones. Sure, they didn't pick up every viewer at any point. But the general trend is clear.

There's no reason to think enough people did that to impact the numbers. Or precedent of that happening with any other show. So it sounds like wishful thinking to me, certainly not a viable theory.

This episode went from one of the greatest tv episodes in television history to fucking Moonlight.
:angry:Can they make anything without throwing in gay sex. wtf!!!!
The fag shit wasn’t necessary
WELP
I'm halfway through the episode and it confirmed what I thought
I won't see any representation on TV ever again.
Nobody that's like me.
I'm seeing articles about how "woke" this show is racially, so of course I log onto BGOL and see people bitching about one gay black character or couple. #fixated
why bother posting ignorantly?
lets talk in critical terms after you watch the episode
I will respond to this part of the discussion once I have viewed.

However, what I was commenting on was the normal mainstream reaction versus the skewed focus here. And my assessment of the predictable and lamentable difference was not based in ignorance, but a direct and informed comparison.

Okay, I'm through episode 6 now.

And the reaction here reminds me of the Jemele Hill line "Straight black men are the white people of black people."

Because some of you sound exactly like the "cacs" you were mocking about being mad at all the black representation in the first episode.

Was it necessary for Hooded Justice to be closeted or bisexual? Of course not. But that would not diminish him or the story in any way. (And I say that for those without knowledge of the comic-- the fact that he was in there actually makes it necessary for the TV show and all this whining even sillier.) Certainly nothing to be mad about or throw away the whole series saying "I don't have representation on TV now." Because nobody would mirror you 100% in any circumstances so unless you're a 105 year old black man from Tulsa who went through all the shit Hooded Justice did except you happened to be totally straight, this episode did not change your representation on TV one bit.

It's just a story. And a damn good one. CACs need to be able to appreciate stories with black people or revolving around black people and the CACs of black people similarly need to not seek to discard anything that does not conform to their respectability politics as diminished or an attack on them.

Cal Is Doctor Manhattan
This theory is bold, but one that has been posited by several Reddit users. Through six episodes, Doctor Manhattan has made only brief appearances either in dialogue, on TV screens, twisted theatrical productions, and via one, uh, big blue dildo. But Doctor Manhattan is set to appear in full at some point—we know as much from one of the season’s trailers.

Cal, Angela’s stay-at-home husband, has also been one of the series’ most mysterious characters. We know that he and Angela met in Saigon, Vietnam, and that something happened to him there that Angela didn’t want him talking about to Agent Blake, but we know little of his background beyond that.

As ksendor outlines, there are a few stand-out instances that suggest that Cal could be the blue god himself: He’s quick to affirm that Doctor Manhattan can’t pretend to be human in a conversation with Angela; Laurie has taken a liking to Cal and mentions him to Angela on several occasions; the camera holds a shot on Cal’s surprised face when he sees Laurie at Chief Crawford’s funeral; and at the end of the graphic novel, Doctor Manhattan suggests he has a renewed interest in humanity.

It’s true that, at least in the comics, Doctor Manhattan can’t pretend to be human. But the mere fact the show would explicitly say as much certainly leaves open the possibility that they’re misdirecting—just as they did with the false narrative in the show-within-the-show, American Hero Story, Cal’s line could’ve simply been a tactic to misdirect the audience. Even more, Doctor Manhattan is, again, pretty much a god—it’s been 30 years since we’ve last seen what the good doctor is capable of, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see that he’s figured out how to disguise himself as a human. On the other hand, Laurie’s interest in Cal could simply be related to the fact that, as she’s suggested herself, Cal’s hot.

In the comic, Doctor Manhattan did tell Adrian Veidt that he’d regained interest in humanity, but he also said, “I’m leaving this galaxy for one less complicated.” To that, Adrian responded, “But you’d regained interest in human life,” and Manhattan replied: “Yes, I have. I think perhaps I’ll create some.”

I like this theory, but my guess is that Doctor Manhattan will tie into the show as the god that created all the servants that Adrian has been hanging out with on the Jupiter moon Europa (or wherever the hell the other side of that portal leads to), rather than unveiling himself to secretly be Angela’s husband. There’s a lot left to be learned about Cal (and from the looks of this next episode’s teaser, it seems we’ll soon learn some answers about what happened in Vietnam), and it’s still unclear what exactly happened to him on the White Night, but it might be too much of a thermodynamic miracle for Doctor Manhattan to be living among the humans as Mr. Abar.

Hmmmm…

Interesting.. with cal reveal. Explains a few things gs. Like his heaven or hell conservation with the kids. Possibly how Angela survived the white night. Looking glass bodied them cacs and got in the wind. And how the fuck does keen knows who dr. Manhattan is? And do 7th Calvary have something to subdue dr Manhattan or will he go willingly? And what’s up with the elephant?

you know the saying about an elephant's memories?...wondering if it operates as a main storage database for many memories

I had a high school basketball coach who said to us ALL the time "I'm like an elephant, I DON'T FORGET SHIT". It was his was of telling us we don't know shit about the game of basketball and learning fundamentals in order to be any good. No only that, being young and not knowing shit about life in general so you have to listen in order to learn.

I do see the elephant like the database you're talking about (ironically, there is an open source database software called PostgreSQL that uses the elephant as it's symbol).

How Angela lived through his history through his pills, maybe Will is now living through her history to find out what happened to his son and wife? Just my theory. I gotta watch this over again. No, I ain't read the comic or saw the movie (generally speaking).
