Friends raise funds for four young children of murdered Mississippi mother
Family and friends of a Mississippi mother who was murdered this week — allegedly by a police officer with whom she was romantically involved — have begun a fundraising drive to help the victim’s four children.
Dominique “Lucy” Clayton was murdered on May 19, leaving behind four children ranging in age from 8 to 14 years old.
A GoFundMe campaign to benefit Clayton’s children in the months and years to come has been setup. Alex Coleman, who started the donation campaign, said he did so in part because of his close ties to the Clayton family.
If the donations can lessen any financial burdens, he said, the family can focus on healing and being together. So far, the GoFundMe has raised approximately $3,000.
“It brought tears to my eyes when we hit the $1,000 mark. These kids depended on their mother, and she’s just suddenly gone,” Coleman said. “The people here can hear the cry of real need, and that makes all the difference when people are going through things – there are so many people who listen and respond.”
In addition to monetary funds, Coleman said the group behind the fundraiser is looking for other ways to minister to the four children. It takes a village, he said, and TyKez, 14, Jadarius, 8, Kyasia,10 and Lanyjiah, 12, are surrounded by so many who love them.
Those who can provide services like counseling, or who can even contribute to making their summer as peaceful and enjoyable as possible, are encouraged to do so.

The former police officer, who is white, allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend, who is Black, by shooting her in the back of the head as she slept after she told him she may be pregnant with his child, according to the Oxford Eagle.
Kinne accepted life in prison without the possibility of parole in a plea agreement to avoid the death sentence. He is expected to sentenced on Friday at the Union County Courthouse in New Albany, the Oxford Eagle reported.
The former officer was arrested the day after Clayton was found shot dead in her home on May 19, 2019, by her 8-year-old son. He was fired from the Oxford Police Department shortly after the shooting. Two other officers also resigned in connection with the case.
In August of 2019, after his arrest, Kenne was photographed inside the Lafayette County jail eating near a guard desk, unguarded and unrestrained. He was later moved to another jail in another county.
The case was on hold for years amid the coronavirus pandemic and delays from the Mississippi crime lab.
Kinne’s attorneys tried to claim that he was mentally unfit to stand trial, however a psychological examination confirmed that he was healthy.
“He’s remorseful,” said Tony Farese, Kinne’s attorney to WREG. “This was a situation where he literally got to the point where he broke. This has been a law-abiding citizen, a law enforcement officer, he had no prior history and he literally got pushed to the brink of breaking and he committed a crime of passion.”
In June 2019, Clayton’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of Oxford and the Oxford Police Department for $5 million. There hasn’t been a finding in the civil case.
According to the attorney, her family claims that the police department caused “undue stress” by reporting that Clayton may have killed herself when the case first began, despite the fact that no gun was found at the scene.

Matthew Kinne was in uniform when he shot Dominique Clayton during what was billed as a welfare check. He pleaded guilty to capital murder and is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A hearing that was scheduled for Thursday in federal court to decide what Kinne must pay was canceled Thursday morning. The Daily Journal reports that Senior Judge Glen H. Davidson ordered payment from Matthew Kinne after he failed to respond to the lawsuit.
Records show, “The Court finds that the Defendant Kinne is liable for compensatory damages in the amount of $1,200,000. In arriving at this figure, the Court awards $300,000 to each of the surviving children of the Decedent, for a total of $1,200,000.”
The judge ruled that punitive damages were also warranted in the case because of the “intentional, wanton, willful, and reckless nature of Defendent Kinne’s actions against the Decedent.”
The judge awarded punitive damages in the amount of $1,000,000, for a total of $2,200,000.

I feel bad for the kids. To lose a mother at such a young age and under those circumstances. This was bound to end badly after she told him she was pregnant. Married men rarely ever leave their wives and family for a side piece. Especially if the man is white and side piece is black. Dude already didn't value her as person. She was 4 kids deep and now expecting a 5th. The thought of having a baby with a black woman w/4 kids spooked the hell out that cat. He should've just let things play out. At least he would be a free man.
