George Jefferson was a republican

I was watching an episode of the Jeffersons (The one where he calls the whitehouse to have Jimmy Carter stay with him) and he declares he is a republican.

Made me dig a little on why that would be at that time and came up with a list of useless information regarding fictional characters as republicans on TV.

Characters identified as Republican
The following is a list of people who have been described with the term Republican or who identify with the Republican Party. This section is only intended for fictional characters who explicitly identify as Republicans.

Film[edit]
Television[edit]
Animation[edit]
Video Games[edit]
  • Hurk Drubman Sr. from Far Cry 5 is a candidate for Montana Senate and quest-giver, who assigns you the task of retrieving his campaign truck named after former first lady Nancy Reagan.
  • Derby Harrington from Bully
Print[edit]
  • Carmen from Prickly City
  • Mallard Fillmore from Mallard Fillmore
  • Bucky Katt from Get Fuzzy was a supporter of Mitt Romney during 2012, which Rob states Bucky supports because of Mitt Romney cruelty to his dog. Because of Bucky being rude and dumb he is supposed to be a satire to conservatives.
  • Rat from Pearls Before Swine once was a folk singer for the far right and wrote a song for pro-oil spills called 'Maybe Your Ducky Likes Swimming In The Mucky'. Rat also considers 'liberal' as an insult. Like Bucky, Rat is supposed to spoof Republicans.
  • Dogbert from Dilbert
Theatre[edit]
  • Rod from Avenue Q claims a "friend" he is describing (actually himself) is a Republican
Characters who endorsed a Republican candidate[edit]

The party realignment happened after the 1964 civil rights act. Most white southern democrats became republican when they were majority democrat before then.
Black that came up in the 50s n 60s in the south are likely to be republican - some then switched in the 70s
southern Democrats were racists until Lyndon Johnson
black business owners in the 70s 80s may have been republican - or were Regan democrats
The hard alt right polarization we see now started under Reagan but really caught fire under Clinton - his admin went to war suppressing militias, KKK, nazis etc

It always seemed weird to me as well. He was designed to be the black Archie Bunker but you wouldn't think they'd be in the same party.

It was designed that way from the jump, too. I''m gonna try to find this episode and re-watch it tonight:

Yes, this is what stood out for me

Archie Bunker was just another racist CAC

AKA just another member of the "silent majority" that the Republican party stood for...

I don't understand how any black man could be a part of the party of Nixon... This seems to be the writers letting you know George was an "I'm about mine" guy, literally just the black Archie Bunker rather than his polar opposite.

It makes sense the more that I think about it. George's relationship with Lionel mirrored Archie's relationship with Mike Stivic (and Gloria) from a generational perspective.

Archie Bunker was a Democrat.

You're right, that's why he always called

Michael Stivic a liberal commie.

I just saw a rerun on tv literally 2 days ago when George wanted to get into racist golf club through a racist judge and was blinded by wanting to be upper class. The judge hid his true colors until he couldn't hide it when he invited Tom to the club, but then took back the invite when he found out his wife was Helen.

Weezy thought George was going to call out the judge about it, but he didn't. He wanted to be in that club so bad his natural instincts didn't kick in. It wasn't until one of the black workers at the club explained to him he was being used as a token to get the media off the club's back for being racist. That's when he came to his senses and remembered about his father working for "the man" like how that black man did for the club.

Then yesterday, I saw George pretending to be the great great grandson of Thomas Jefferson as an advertising gimmick to counter his competition's promotion. It wasn't until he was asked by his ad agency to appear on tv that he came to his senses again not wanting people to think he had "Honky" bloodline.

I do love the show and it's layers.

Loved those episodes as well. He was always trying to get in good with "whitey"... but it was always about money until he rationalized that his pride was more important.
