Sprint points out its LTE network is, in fact, trash

The maps don’t look good

It’s not exactly a secret that Sprint’s LTE network, well, just isn’t very good compared to other carriers like AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile.

But it’s surprising for a company like Sprint to just up and admit that its LTE network is dramatically worse than all of its competitors, like Sprint just did in a recent filing, via analyst Walt Piecyk.

Sprint has been trailing the other carriers in overall speed and coverage for years. It’s not impossible to figure out why — Sprint has never been the largest of carriers, and a costly misfire by betting on WiMAX first for 4G instead of LTE like everyone else meant that Sprint was years behind other networks’ buildouts.

For comparison, Sprint’s usual coverage map

But what’s interesting is that instead of trying to minimize its poor coverage — like Sprint does on its usual coverage maps, which includes non-LTE service to make that filled in yellow area look bigger — Sprint is trying to make its network look bad by shining a giant spotlight on it.

And the reason is simple: Sprint is in the long process of trying to convince regulators that the pending merger with T-Mobile is a good thing for the industry, instead of a harmful contraction of an extremely limited market that has badly needed competition. And by making its network look weak and unthreatening in the overall telecommunications landscape, the company is clearly hoping that regulators will be more likely to let the deal go through.

But even compared to other carriers, it’s important to remember that Sprint isn’t a tiny company — as Fierce Wireless notes, it has over 53 million subscribers, and even if its LTE coverage isn’t great, it’s still a massive part of the industry, no matter how small it wishes to pass itself off as.

How does Sprint still exist ...shit should've died pretty much around/after the Nextel chirp phones... Sprint stores historically were filled with angry customers and routinely ud almost see worker and customer look like they'd go to blows..damn near every sprint user I knew back in the days sometime or another got a mysterious $200 bill that never could be explained... Sprint been trash

I got the same problem with Sprint like I did with Primco back in the day. I get better service sometimes by switching it to 3g. A sprint salesman told me to do it back in march

Sprint was the shit in the late 90s/early 2000s though; when other plans limited you to regional calling; Sprint PCS had the nationwide shit on lock; Motorola StarTec would get the ho’s open and Sprint had you talking coast to coast; plus you’d owe them $100, get your phone cut off; call and pay $50 to get your shit cut back on and rinse repeat the next month .

Now, I’ve wished them death since they pulled the bait and switch about their network after the got the iPhone and charged out the ass while never owning up to the fact that their garbage network was the cause of all the problems; wasted tons of time with their CS “reboot, let us send an update blah blah” shit; plus when people like me found a workaround roaming on Verizon so we could actually have phone and LTE coverage, they switched the terms of the contract from “unlimited roaming” to “see terms of service” and thru in a cap of 300mb roaming (so I’d stream HD YouTube videos while I slept every night so I’d go over the cap to get out my contract penalty-free); I left in 2013 and smile every time I read about them taking another L; Sprint is to cell service what Kia is to the auto industry.
