GameStop confirms buyout talks as downloads take their toll
The retailer has been in financial trouble for a long while.

It won't shock you to hear that GameStop has been suffering as downloads have taken off. Now, however, it might be looking for help. In the wake of a Reuters leak, GameStop has confirmed that it's in talks about a "potential transaction." While the retail chain is shy about what those discussions involve and isn't promising a deal, the sources claimed that the chats were in response to "buyout interest" from private equity companies like Sycamore Partners.

The talks come after months of upheaval. CEO Michael Mauler left his position in May for personal reasons just three months after taking the role, leaving board member (and former Xbox exec) Shane Kim to step in as interim chief. And in 2017, GameStop had to both close 150 stores and grapple with a serious credit card data breach.

While it's far from certain that there will be a deal, it won't be surprising if one comes to pass. Despite diversifying its offerings to include everything from tablets to figurines, GameStop has still been heavily dependent on physical game and console sales -- and pushing used game sales could only do so much in an era when digital rules. Why go to GameStop when you can buy your console on Amazon, download your games straight from the source and avoid the usual pre-order and warranty pitches? A selloff wouldn't necessarily help GameStop avoid the realities of technological progress, but it could give the company an opportunity to regroup and adapt to the modern era.

I personally prefer physical copies over digital. Only because of hard drive space. I think Sony and Microsoft need to figure something for the next generation of consoles. Because if they offer the same bullshit 500gb or 1tb. Entry level system I'm going to say fuck both of them. As I have done with Nintendo.

I think Nintendo has the man power and money. To develop an system with more than 32gb of memory.

Make up/beauty store will still be on.

I like puttin my hands on something’s I want to buy.

Got my boy a yeti cup, black color, I want to make sure it’s the best one there.

No marks, dings. Can’t do that with ordered shit.

I don’t like digital

Like going into Best Buy and GameStop to check out games and talk to the nerds

Im with you 2 kats, I wanna hold whatever it is, in my hand and get a feel for it. I like tryin on shoes, because every size 12 isnt the same!! But, I think were in the minority when it comes to shopping, the majority of these young folks wanna shop online and they have a million reasons why to shop online..

Yeah if for whatever reason a license may expire you've lost the use of the game. I had a Turtles In Time on my 360. The licenses expired and its forever gone from the 360 library. Also lets say your account is suspended you're also locked out of the games attached to your account.

Did they ever give a reason, why they discontinued the purchase of turtles in time. Because when it was on PSN. I didn't know it was on there. And when looked for it, it was gone.

Don't both systems let you use an external drive? I know the PS4 does. Im working with 5tb.

Yeah. But you shouldn't have to buy extra shit, just to play the system. For example I ended up buying a external hard drive. A little bit after GOW came out. I wanted to play COD WW2 for an hour or so. But I couldn't. WW2 needed to update, and damn system was full. I ended up deleting shit. And still couldn't play. So I had to wait a couple of weeks. To buy a external hard drive.

I prefer physical.

Analyst: 66% of console players still prefer physical games over digital

Nielsen has published its annual Games 360 report, offering developers some insight into how consumer trends and preferences have shifted in the past year.

The full, free report offers samples of data about everything from the overall perception of VR to esports and mid-generational console updates and is worth flipping through if you’ve got the time.

One of the more divisive topics in this year’s report involved digital and physical game releases. Nielsen asked players over the age of 13 how much time they spent playing games per week and how much money they would typically spend a month on games, then split those answers according to primary platform and if they preferred digital or physical games.

Overall, 66 percent of console users preferred physical games, compared to just 29 percent of PC players. Meanwhile, only 34 percent would rather pick up a digital game on console while a whopping 71 of PC users prefer digital copies over physical.

On both console and PC, players that prefer digital tend to spend more time per week playing games, with digital console players averaging 6.4 hours and digital PC players averaging 7.6 hours. Meanwhile, the opposite is true when looking at spending. People that prefer to buy games physically tend to spend more per month on video games, both on console and on PC.

Later on, the report also offers an interesting breakdown of how money is spent on games and game-related products overall between things like new games, downloadable content, used games, online subscriptions and more. The graph detailing those findings can be found just below while the full report and all the information it has to offer can be downloaded for free on Nielsen’s site.

The Future is here Digital is more convenient, Downloads quickly on PS4 only need 20% b4 start playing, also every Tuesday on Psn there's sales on top and newly released games not to mention flash sales on Fridays. Just some patience sometimes you can cop 2 or 3 triple A titles in a sale of the price of ONE, I REPEAT ONE used copy at Gamestop,so y'all can keep Gamestop... By the way I have a 10 year old ps3 with a 2tb of digital joints (10 years).

Yeah it’s almost like paying $60 bucks to rent a game, because you run out of space to store it. Then end up deleting it to add another game on your hard drive.

If damn near everyone here preferred physical copies as they claim, then places like GameStop wouldn't be in dire straits. Digital media is the future. You either evolve or you get thrown under the bus. Same thing has been happening in the music industry for a while now.

There will always be physical media, but it'll pale in comparison to the popularity of digital media.

Not worth it to sell games back to them, but if you pay attention you can sometimes get good deals trading in hardware. I'm a PC gamer, so I didn't get a PS3 until the very end of it's run. It was $50 at a thrift shop. I traded it in last week for $80 for a PS Pro during a deal they had going on along with the days of play sale.

I'll probably never set foot back in the store, since I'm used to buying games online but I will pay attention to sales they have from here on out.

GameStop has to evolve or die.

Probably die.

As far as physical vs digital....

I own like 78 titles on my XBOX One, three of which are actually physical copies. The rest of the games I own I got for free through Games with Gold.

I used to prefer physical games and media but fuck that now. I'd rather have the extra space and not clutter up our family and media rooms with discs.

Same thing with movies. I got rid of hundreds of DVDs years ago, only held onto a few collections and sets, and I don't ever play those at all. I don't even own BluRays, outside of a kids movie my daughter wanted from a bargain bin when when we were out shopping one day.

I still own a gang of PS3 and Original XBOX and GameCube games, but current generation games, my terabyte hard drive works just fine.

I'm all for digital media.

Had I paid for damn near all those 78 games, I can understand wanting physical copies to sell...
