CD Projekt RED responds to first-person Cyberpunk 2077 questions

When Cyberpunk 2077 wants you to get inside V’s head, it means that literally.

RPG fans have literally been waiting for years for a hint of Cyberpunk 2077 news. Now the game has finally made its E3 debut and it looks like everything we could have hoped for. And yet somehow, lots of players are expressing disappointment that this will be a first-person RPG.

That said, CD Projekt RED does have a reason for the perspective change: it really does want you to get inside V’s head.

“With Witcher 3, you’re playing Geralt and you’re watching Geralt. You’re controlling Geralt. He’s a character, right? He’s somebody who already exists,” Cyberpunk 2077 quest designer Patrick Mills told Eurogamer at E3. “In this game we wanted to put you in the shoes and in the body of the character you’re controlling, so you feel like this is your character. First-person was one way to do that.”

Mills goes a step further by noting that a first-person perspective allows for a sense of immersion that is harder to achieve otherwise. “We can do some environmental stuff from first-person that you wouldn’t be able to do in third-person. If nothing else, I think it’s going to be really cool when you’re walking around the city and you look up, which is something that in third-person doesn’t really feel right.”

On a mechanical level, CD Projekt RED has made clear that gameplay will still be RPG-heavy, even if its perspective has changed from The Witcher series.

I’m trying to get why so many people are bitching about it being first player...... fallout and Skyrim are first player.

Many gamers are complaining because the game developer (CD Projekt) made the Witcher Trilogy. And the last Witcher 3 game was a 3rd-person, action RPG that has either flat out won/or was nominated for over 100+ different "Game of the Year" Awards.

Making an open-world, 3rd-person, Action RPG game................... is something CD Projekt does WELL.

So making this new Cyberpunk game as a 1st-person RPG just doesn't make sense to alot of gamers. :smh:

(Especially if you can customize your character in several different ways, like selecting your gender, skin color, hair styles, tattoos, clothes, gear, etc... then playing from a 1st-person perspective doesn't allow you to 'see' all the nifty customizations you made. :smh: Which means for the vast majority of your playing time... the only thing you will ever primarily see are just your hands & forearms. :smh:)

To some gamers...
- It's like Rockstar saying their next version of "Grand Theft Auto" will be a 1st-person RPG game. :dunno:
- Or it's like Naughty Dog saying their next version of "Uncharted" will be a 1st-person RPG game. :dunno:

People don't really want that. :smh: (Or at least they were not expecting that. :dunno:)

Hence, they probably feel like CD Projekt should "stick to what they do best".

Those two games you named can both be played in 3rd person at the click of a bu

I watched a gameplay video the other day. Resident Evil has always turned me off by the slow pace of the game. Zombies are dropping but you can't stomp the head and keep moving. It takes 3 head shots with a pistol to put one down when you got multiple zombies coming for you.

Prior to gta3 ..... rockstar didn’t have any experience with 3rd person open world. Gta2 was top down. All they made was the top down arcade looking shit. No cinematices.... no voice overs... small studio

Gta3 was a new concept and it came out a masterpiece.

Naughty dog started out with Jax and Crash bandicoot as their only real franchises..... I remember laughing when they said naughty dog was working on uncarthed cause they other games were goofy as shit.

Let a studio try something new.... your can do all these customizations in Skyrim and fallout and nobody bitches about not being able to see their person. Who is to say that the game won’t end up with a third person camera option.

Have they said that this game won’t have this type of option?

This just seems like the weirdest complaint that I’ve seen in awhile.

If you want to complain .... complain about how Konami is dropping another Zone of Enders remaster for PlayStation VR but refuse to drop a Zoe 3!!!!

I pity the fool brave enough to play that game in vr

I get your point..... but gamers have gotten very used to newer (3rd-person) games like: GTA, Uncharted, Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed, Days Gone, The Last of Us, Death Stranding, Tomb Raider, Red Dead Redemption, etc.

Personally, I think you are right... pretty sure they will add a '3rd-person camera' option before launch.... due to the overwhelming response.

Woman Accuses Sony Of Cultural Appropriation, And Gets Shut Down In An Unexpected Way

She may have meant well, but Twitter user Dani Jo probably should have done her research before accusing Japanese company Sony of appropriating its own culture.

It all started at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2018 where Sony hired a musician to play a traditional Japanese instrument while dressed in traditional Japanese attire.

The musician was Cornelius Boots, and yes, he is American and he is white.

But there was more to the story than Dani Jo realized and it all came pouring out on social media.

It all started with this tweet:

Some people chimed in agreeing with Dani Jo, of course:

But then Twitter user BestMomEva, who says she is Japanese, dropped some serious knowledge.

Many agreed with BestMomEva's take:

The whole cultural appropriation debate will rage on, of course, but hey, at least we learned something.

I put like 3-5 hours into Witcher 3 wasn't feeling it.

Guess i'll pick it up again and see what the big deal is

I don’t care that dude was a master...... why have a white dude play a Japanese instrument, in Japanese dress, for a Japanese based game.. it just look all kinds of wrong especially with what’s going on right now.

If Chef Ramsey was a master of soul food... I would want dude being the grandmaster for the Black American Soulfood festival. I don’t care how he cooks cornbread.

They will still say Sony won E3  lol

PlayStation is skipping E3 2019

First time in the show’s 24-year history

Sony and the PlayStation brand will not have a presence at E3 2019, a representative for the company confirmed Thursday to Polygon.

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community,” Sony said in a statement to Polygon. “PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”

E3 2019 will be the 25th E3, and it will be the first time in the convention’s history that Sony will not appear at the show. The very first E3 was held in May 1995; Sony made a splash during the event by announcing the U.S. launch date and price for the original PlayStation.

Next year, the company will not hold its traditional Monday evening press briefing, nor will it have a booth on the show floor at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Asked if Sony will move its E3 presence offsite, like Electronic Arts has done in the past three years with EA Play, a PlayStation representative said no — it’s passing up the opportunity entirely.

“We will not be programming around E3,” the spokesperson told Polygon.

Sony’s announcement is a surprise not only because it attended all 24 E3s to this point, but also because the company previously announced that it was not holding PlayStation Experience — its own showcase for all things PlayStation — in 2018. PlayStation Experience had been running annually in December for each of the past four years. There’s no word yet on whether Sony will revive PlayStation Experience at some point in 2019. In the meantime, Microsoft brought back its own Xbox showcase last week with X018 in Mexico City.

At this time, Sony is the only platform holder to say that it will skip E3 2019. In a news release about the convention, its organizers at the Entertainment Software Association said that both Microsoft and Nintendo have “committed to participating in E3 2019,” along with the following third-party game publishers: Activision, Bethesda Softworks, Capcom, Epic Games, Konami, Square Enix, Take-Two, Ubisoft and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

“We are confident that, through the continued creative innovations delivered by our participating member companies, E3 2019 will deliver the same kind of excitement and energy,” said Stanley Pierre-Louis, interim CEO of the ESA, in the news release. “This year, we’re looking forward to expanding E3 beyond the walls of the LACC and connecting gamers and attendees with incredible video game content throughout the entire LA Live complex.”

A representative for the ESA declined further comment to Polygon when asked specifically about Sony’s exit from E3. Pierre-Louis is running the ESA while the firm searches for a permanent replacement for Michael D. Gallagher, who had been the organization’s longtime president and CEO until his departure in October.

This is hardly the first major change for E3. Nintendo has not hosted a typical E3 press conference since 2013, opting for Nintendo Direct presentations instead. EA left the show in 2016 in favor of separately hosting EA Play. In 2017, the ESA opened up E3 to the public for the first time, selling three-day passes for $149 to $249. The ESA said that E3 2019 will feature “an expanded emphasis on featuring never-before-seen content and providing immersive new experiences for attendees,” in addition to more of a focus on “burgeoning video game sectors” such as esports and indie games.

Microsoft reaffirms commitment to E3 2019 after Sony pulls out

Today, Sony announced that it won't hold a media briefing at E3 2019. The news comes as a surprise to many, with both a new console generation on the horizon, alongside new PlayStation 4 titles. While Sony is likely hosting its own independent conference sometime next year, Microsoft has used this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to the show.

After news spread that Sony cancelled its yearly appearance, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer and the official Xbox Twitter account reaffirmed the company's commitment to E3. Spencer said that the team has "a lot to share with fans at E3 2019" and it's "always a high point of the year to witness the industry's creativity and the energy of the community."

Over the past few years, a lot of publishers have held their own media briefings and E3 is seen as less relevant. The fact that Sony won't hold an event can be seen as a major blow. However, given the fact that E3 has let in fans over the past few years, it's turning into a celebration of gaming.

It's unclear why Sony decided to cancel its event, but this seems like a great opportunity for Microsoft to promote its next-generation console and announce upcoming games from first-party studios like Playground Games, Ninja Theory, and Obsidian Entertainment.

Yes Sony will still be shown as the victor lol. I think they are getting ready for the PS5. Microsoft is obviously getting ready. But they will need some big games to fight Spider-Man 2, God of War 2 and The Last of Us 2. I see all of those as next gen.
