The rate of suicide deaths has been rising across the U.S. since at least 1999, according to new data released Thursday. But in some states, the increases are staggering.

In North Dakota, the suicide rate increased by almost 58 percent from 1999 to 2016, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the 25 states where the suicide rate increase by more than 30 percent, the most noticeable rises occurred in western states. Montana, Idaho, the Dakotas and Wyoming all saw increases from 38 to 58 percent. In the east, Vermont, New Hampshire and South Carolina saw dramatic spikes as well.

Suicide is the 10th-leading cause of death in the U.S., and rates have been climbing steadily for years. There were 44,965 suicide deaths in 2016, according to CDC data. Approximately half of such deaths involve the use of a firearm. While mental health is often a factor, the CDC cautioned that there is no single reason for the nearly 30 percent nationwide increase between 1999 and 2016, pointing to the finding that approximately half of those who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition.

Suicide prevention largely focuses on addressing mental health treatment, the CDC found, suggesting that a wider variety of preventive measures could be taken. The findings point to the need both to address the circumstances associated with the onset of mental health conditions—such as relationship, financial or criminal problems—and to support those with known mental conditions to decrease the risk of suicide, the CDC said.

Condolences to the BGOL fam' that have lost family and/or friends/coworkers to suicide over the years. Worked with 2 people that took their lives (mid- to late-2000s), and great grandfather on dad's side way back in the day (late-1940s or early-5os).

I lost a good friend in high school.. Sad story!!

We have several coworkers commit suicide while on the job every year. As a matter of fact it's suicide season right now.

Agreed. It's really jarring when you hear the devastating news.

No doubt, I can remember the day, the weather, the reaction when we arrived at school and heard the news.. Damn, that seems like yesterday its that clear and that happened in 1981!! Anyway, just venting a bit!!

Well said. Amazing how you can recall many details dating back decades now. It shows the impact for real.

society is the biggest burden....you have to look like this, you need to live here, you should wear this and drive this type of car and for most this is the standard but is it really living your life?no and for some it's a heavy burden to carry around so some check out.

Live your best life,do what you want, have no regret and everything else will work itself out ,oh yeah and fuck what they think, most would wish they were in your shoes because their not living but rather just existing.

Damn, what industry do you work in?

Maybe people need to travel more...

I think its a lot deeper than that, but I wonder if nature is a factor.

Notice how the highest rates are in places that have shitty weather more times than not; Lack of sun etc. Mofos be in one space for too long. A change of scenery, even for a day or two, can change a lot.

Some of these are most likely opioid deaths reclassified as suicide.

Have a few people I work with commit suicide. One guy always seemed happy and really caught us all off guard. A guy I trained did 3 tours in Iraq but seemed to be doing well. Had some really good conversations about the choices we both made in life to get to where We're at. He'd always ask me how do I keep going. I'd always tell him it was about finding joy and peace with the little things that you can control. He hung himself the very next week.

Found out one of my best teachers in high school committed suicide over debt. Left his kids behind just lost. I don't understand, but my world view as a black man naturally makes me want to pull through whatever the he'll may be going against me for my families sake and my own. As I continue to learn the resilience of our people, I'll be damned if I go out that way.

what type of work is this?

It's not any specific work role, it's just that reviews and promotions are done right about now. Combine that with a company that tries to convince employees that they can't go anywhere else and be treated better...

This might be corny to some, but this might be the effect of many people turning they back on religion.

A lot of these cases, they are leaving kids without their parents.

Drugs, lack of spiritual foundation, and being overwhelmed with social media can cause anyone to go crazy.

When I say drugs, I mean legal/illegal.

Real talk, right here. Time heals all wounds is the truest statement ever made. What some people may feel is devastating today, more than likely, will be just a bump in the road if you keep on living. But I understand that some may believe the burden maybe too hard to carry. But if you just let time heal it it will be alright. Then that temporary insanity kicks in (for some) and tell them, no it hurts and then a drastic mistake is made that can’t be undone.

Yet another reason we need to teach our youth to start their own businesses

White males that off themselves could not hack it in a system that was designed for them to succeed and thrive at the expense of others. That is called "Justice" on a universal scale.
