Man Of Steel Was Planned To Begin 5-Movie Story

Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel was originally intended to be the first part of a five movie story, it has been revealed. The 2013 Superman movie saw a debuting Henry Cavill in the iconic titular role and triggered the dawn of the DC Extended Universe, Warner Bros.’ answer to the flourishing Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. Although Cavill has since appeared in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, no direct sequel to Man Of Steel has been announced, despite reports emerging regarding potential candidates to direct.

The DCEU’s future and the overall grand plan for the franchise is something that has come under scrutiny since the poor critical reception to BvS and although much is unknown about Warner Bros.’ intentions, it is clear that a big deviation has been made from Snyder’s original design. Despite this, MoS and BvS storyboard artist Jay Oliva recently spoke out to counter suggestions that Batman had been drafted into the DCEU early, claiming that Snyder always intended the Caped Crusader to face off against Supes after MoS.

However, while the DCEU’s first two movies may have followed Snyder’s plan, Oliva has now claimed that the director’s original intention was to have a five-film arc beginning with MoS and BvS. Responding to a follower on Twitter bemoaning the lack of a Man Of Steel 2, the artist stated:

“Man of Steel was never meant to have a sequel because it was supposed to be chapter 1 of a 5 chapter story. Notice how BvS follows exactly after MoS? It’s like book two of Harry Potter.”

Once again, Oliva is reiterating his stance that BvS is essentially the follow-up MoS, which makes perfect sense seeing as it carries on many of the plot threads established in the first movie. However, it’s very interesting to hear that Snyder originally had another three movies planned in the same series. As Oliva suggests in his tweet, this design has since been dropped, due to both poor critical reaction to the DCEU (Wonder Woman excluded) and Zack Snyder being forced to step away from post-production of Justice League due to personal tragedy. The resulting change of direction is evident in dropped story threads such as the teasing of Darkseid and the Batman Knightmare scenes and alterations like these have led to the assumed existence of a mythical “Snyder cut” of the movie.

One crucial question is exactly what other three movies did Snyder have in mind for his opus. Obviously, Justice League would have been the third installment and, since the superhero team-up was originally announced as a two-parter, Justice League 2 was likely to have been film four – the franchise’s Goblet of Fire, to use Oliva’s analogy. The real mystery lies in what would have been the fifth and final film in Syder’s arc. Flashpoint is a distinct possibility given that Aquaman and Wonder Woman were always going to have standalone adventures and, intriguingly, Warner Bros. are pressing ahead with a movie based on this iconic comic story.

Of course now that the DCEU is no longer following Snyder’s five-film arc, the possibility of a direct Man Of Steelsequel could be on the table, even if the director himself never intended one to materialize. In hindsight, the 2013 Superman solo venture proved to be one of the better-received entries in the franchise and most DC fans are content with Henry Cavill’s performance in the role. Perhaps returning focus solely to Superman in a future movie wouldn’t be such a bad movie for the DCEU.

you are one who always defends this film

does this current revelation effect your opinion at all?

And do you think this also explains most other people's feelings about it?

Which one
Steel or bvs?

Cause steel there should be no complaints had
And bvs I can see complaints about aspects of it and miscasting Luther
But they had hating batman right and Superman right
It just goes to show you don't go that ambitious unless every single thing is neatly secured and you know it's going to go off as planned

Cause it just leaves bvs to fend for itself

However I don't believe the 5 movie arc shit cause that would mean justice league was movie 3 in that arc and that makes no sense

If this was the case... then why did they fucking BUTCHER... all of the Superman Man Clark Kent bits from the Theatrical version of BVS. I could buy this argument if they left in the shit from the extended version.

I call bullshit. Amanda Waller and Lex would have been around from the start. And Superman really had no clue about Batman who had been around forever. Was like they made it up as they went. And we still don't know why Wonder Woman didn't help against Zod.

Zack Snyder Reveals How Man of Steel 2 Became Batman Vs. Superman

I gotta be honest, it definitely was a thing that… after Man of Steel finished and we started talking about what would be in the next movie, I started subtly mentioning that it would be cool if he faced Batman. In the first meeting, it was like, "Maybe Batman?" Maybe at the end of the second movie, some Kryptonite gets delivered to Bruce Wayne's house or something. Like in a cryptic way, that's the first time we see him.

But then, once you say it out loud, right? You're in a story meeting talking about, like, who should [Superman] fight if he fought this giant alien threat Zod who was basically his equal physically, from his planet, fighting on our turf… You know, who to fight next? The problem is, once you say it out loud, then it's kind of hard to go back, right? Once you say, "What about Batman?" then you realize, "Okay, that's a cool idea. What else?" I mean, what do you say after that? …But I'm not gonna say at all that when I took the job to do Man of Steel that I did it in a subversive way to get to Batman. I really believe that only after contemplating who could face [Superman] did Batman come into the picture...

it’s a shame how WB ruined DC live action movies. They had all their animated movies as a guide, and could have easily followed Marvel’s plan to grow their movie universe. wtf?!?! it’s like they tried their hardest to fail on purpose.

I bet Aquaman,Shazam,Suicide Squad 2 and the Harley Quinn solo movie will be the nails in the coffin

Man of Steel and BvS both got Superman wrong. Henry Cavill didn't become Superman til Justice League.

Your opinion and it's all good
But also by your own admission maybe they were showing him grow into the Superman you liked?
Maybe as a human he wasn't polished and literally had to die and come back to appreciate the gifts and the privilege of helping people?

I know you aint ask me, but I'm going to answer anyway.

NO

Hell no, it dont change a lick of shit.
As far as I'm concerned MoS and PoS were written and planned by two different people. Now I am not a big fan of Snyder's writing, (SuckerPunch), but if he said 'Batman' and WB was like run with that and that's why we got PoS - THAT makes sense. The dynamics of MoS and PoS are way different. I would think PoS and Just Us are more similar than adding MoS in the mix.

After watching SYFY's Krypton, I think they should redo General Zod's character

I really hate the fact that he got his neck snapped. Then I REALLY got mad in PoS because there was no coming back from that. Dude played a really good villain! Just like you want more Willem Dafoe!

I told ya from the get go the bvs idea was stupid from the start.. Ya followed and trusted tical now ya and Argentina are here

At the end of the day,
It was all those WB Bean Counters who ruined any chance of DC Properties having any live-action success.
The ONLY reason why Nolan's BATMAN films succeeded was because Nolan (and brother Johanthan) wasn't having that shit.
And the same with Patty Jenkins with WONDER WOMAN

David Goyer and Geoff Johns have been too chickenshit to run interference. Especially in regards to defending Zack Snyder.
If anything, Johns and Goyer should be asserting their knowledge and power of DC's Properties.
It's like they can't stand up to the WB Suits.

This is what Kevin Feige did. That's why Dude is practically running the MCU now.
Though he was highly respected for his comics' knowledge too.
Yeah. Even he has a vision that he doesn't want fucked with.
But it's also his love and knowledge of the MARVEL Universe,
And his giving most directors some creative leeway that's made those films a success.

DC doesn't need to follow MARVEL.
They need to have their own vision.
Their characters are ICONIC!!!
There's no reason why they shouldn't be able to succeed on the Big Screen.

Hell.
If Matthew Vaughn wants to do a SUPERMAN film or two,
Let him fuckin' do it already.

And the same with Patty Jenkins with WONDER WOMAN
:smh: - WW was almost a cluster fuck -it was saved at the end of production... it was a team effort

he who has the gold is king...
Johns had no political power in the studio, and Goyer is a hack, who has ruined more stories than he has been a part of successes - look at his resume you'll notice that he is propped up in every decent film by superior directors / writers (eg. MoS Dark Knight etc were structured and reigned in by Nolan)

Feige runs MCU - period
Disney has a much better management structure than WB - look up the story of how Disney's board of directors separated Feige from Ike Perlmutter's shit show, also look for the story of how / why John Carter was made. Without Disney's intervention the MCU phaze 2 would have churned out movies like the Inhumans
