Sailing anyone?

About a year ago I got a certification that allows me to sail sailboats and I am hooked. Any other sailboat captains on BGOL?

Anyone in the Houston/Galveston area seeking to be a crew member, hit me up? All you need is snacks and drinks.....

Sounds like a cool hobby. I can't swim so I stay away from the ocean. Keep at it if it makes you happy. Damn what anyone else thinks.

Yep..LOL...I never gave a damn what anyone else thought anyway.

The school I learned at is in Keemah, TX. Believe it or not, the Clear Lake/Galveston, TX area is the third most popular sailing area in the US behind San Diego area and Miami/Dade County area.

It cost less than 400 bucks and one weekend to get certified. Saturday morning studying and afternoon in a small boat sailing. Sunday morning test and afternoon sailing in a boat.

Done!!

The school I went to allows one to charter boats at their marina after a lesson in docking and undocking.

1 pm to 6 pm on a 36 foot sailboat costs me $170 including tax. I learned which boats allow me to sail alone and only rent those......that way I don't have to depend on anyone else.

Man please some of these dudes have uncles, cousins and friends that have boats that go fishing, granted the boats might now be as big as the car that's towing it but never the less it's a bout that hits the water and they command it.While won't even let their feet touch the water, let a little bit of sea weed touch their feet and watch that fool fun .

Cool thing and I wish you luck in your sailing.....

Any plans on getting your own boat?
Curious as to the costs of owning even a small vessel....

Ive been sailing once and its dope if you go out on a beautiful day...

nothing like it in the world... I prefer the rush of a speed boat tho...

the cool thing about sailing is you dont have to worry about fuel that bitch is expensive as fuck...

sheeet if I was in texas near the gulf of mexico, Id be tryin to sail to cuba...

if customs dont act like a bitch about it

i was in Galveston last month. would've been nice to have the fam take a trip around the isle on a sailboat....

Seriously, let me know next time you head this way. I actually sail in Clear Lake out of Keemah. You passed that exit on the way to Galveston. Maybe by the time you come back I will have a sailing spot out of Galveston, but Keemah is perfect for families. We will motor right past the Keemah Boardwalk prior to hoisting sails, which is a great day spot for couples and families.

i plan on getting into sailing once i retire

OP start a black sailing club and ill holla in about 15

Already started one. I am the founding and only member in the Clear Lake Area...lol.

Like I said, it's only 400 bucks or less to get certified and I am in the sailing club at my marina, for about 275 a year, which allows me to take out the boat I like for 170 for about 6 hours.

Tomorrow isn't promised my friend....don't wait.

I grew up fishing on powerboats with my dad from a kid.... Spent a lot of time driving powerboats. I learned that when deciding whether you can charter a boat, the marina owner is not concerned about one sailing the boat, they are concerned with docking and undocking because that is where shit can get torn up....driving power boats gives one that experience.

Sailing is different. Once the motor goes off and all you hear is the wind and waves, it's a whole different experience.

I have looked into it. So far no plans. By bareboat (without a captain, because I am the captain), I don't have to do anything but get on the boat. No maintenance, no fuel, no docking fees....... And I am narrowing down the types of boat I would get when I get one by trying different ones. So far the key is having the wenches in the back by the wheel....which makes it easier for solo sailing....

yea the tranquility is off the map... especially if you come from a place like nyc..

especially on a clear summer day... it is a dope experience.. go in the middle of nowhere, sit out there soakin up the sun...nice..

what is the most money you made in one day?

and do you serve beer on your excursions..?

Dope, I'll PM when I head to the southeast side, I was just in kemah at the boardwalk a few weeks back for a carshow.

So you’re actually one of those “Narrow Minded Hood Fucks” that you were speaking about?

Sailing is to much like? work, I prefer to just "whip the wheel"...

Do you rock the cac sailin gear? Jk

Power only for me

Grew up fishing, so I wear boating/fishing gear...lol.

Including Soft Science boating shoes, Magellan fishing shirt and Costa Del Mar shades......

When I learned to play golf in high school, I learned it's not just that you play good, but that you LOOK good playing.....

Man fuck those shoe, make my feet sweat.

What’s your safety gear like?

I hear that a lot, but it isn't true. Hoisting the main sail takes about 3 minutes.....Point the boat into the wind, pull the line to raise the sail, lock the line and voila. Like I said, I sail by myself most of the time.

Hoisting the front sail or the jib, is even easier.

Now, can you spend the whole trip constantly trimming the sails...sure, but no one does that when cruising. Once you point the boat in the direction you want, you can lock the wheel, let the boat sail itself while enjoying a cigar or whatever.

When turning around, you just let the boat move toward the wind, take up slack when the sail is empty and tie the rope off, let the sail fill with wind and kick back. This is the front sail I am talking about. The main sail handles itself.

When I am going in any direction, I sail at least 30 to 40 minutes before changing directions and having to even fuck with the sails.

Not my thing, but good luck. I was always told owning and maintaining a boat is a money pit.

I've fantasized about island hopping on a private yacht across the Caribbean. But I'm sure that's mad expensive.
