$$ FINAL Black Panther Box Office NUMBERS ....$700 Mill Domestic $1.346 Bill Worlwide

The King of Wakanda is not always Black Panther. T'Challa was already the Black Panther probably for a good while after his father retired from it.

When the movie starts with M'Baku fighting for the throne of Wakanda, he was only fighting for the Kingdom and not for the title of Black Panther. Killmonger asked to fight for the Kingdom and the mantle of Black Panther as was his birthright by blood.
yeah this is explained in the beginning of the movie. One of my boys complained that there was very little back story on BP. I didn't even bother to explain it to him.

‘Black Panther’ Leaps Over $200M Offshore; Where It’s Hot And Where It’s Not

UPDATE, writethru
: As Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther continues its record-breaking run at domestic turnstiles, it’s passing $200M at the international box office today. That’s after logging $199.2M through Tuesday in 48 markets. Worldwide, the Ryan Coogler-helmed superhero movie has landed $462.3M through Tuesday.

The overseas Tuesday was $14.6M to represent 11% of the opening weekend. It’s performing well ahead of Doctor Strange and slightly topping last year’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 and Thor: Ragnarok, neither of which were clear comps ahead of the opening weekend that smashed expectations. Percentage-wise BP‘s first Tuesday overseas outperformed that of Captain America: Civil War which was at 10%.

The UK has edged out Korea as the No. 1 overseas market with $28.5M through Tuesday versus Korea’s $28.3M. Korea has nevertheless been wild throughout the first week. Its opening was ahead of Doctor Strange andRagnarok and already exceeded the entire runs ofGuardians Of The Galaxy and Ant-Man. A huge Marvel hub, Korea sent a Valentine to Black Panther when it opened on February 14 — a non-traditional Wednesday. That led in to four days of Chinese New Year holiday play.

Importantly, add to that the big scenes shot in Busan which really brought Korea into the movie — as opposed to such blockbuster faves as Hong Kong or Tokyo — and the market integration was a big draw. The fact that talent kicked off the global press junket in-country also helped push those numbers up. It’s also been suggested that a week of non-stop Olympics action in its own backyard might have encouraged the need for distraction.

Brazil is now the No. 3 market with $11.5M followed byAustralia and Mexico tied at $10.9M. France is next where T’Challa climbed past 1M admissions in the first week, the 3rd best start of the year and ahead of Doctor Strange, Thor and Guardians Of The Galaxy in their first 7-day stretches. The cume there is $9.5M.

Emerging Asian hubs are also feeding the Panther withTaiwan notably at $8M. Action may begin to shift in some of the South East Asian markets as the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday period eases.

Of the markets where BP isn’t having as hot a run,Germany and Italy are at $6.7M and $4.1M, respectively. Rivals over the weekend were quick to point to the lower returns there, saying the phenomenon we’re seeing elsewhere is not translating. It’s fair to note that in the case of Italy, it’s not a terribly strong Marvel market, and BP should finish similar to Doctor Strange, DC’s Justice League and Guardians 2. Germany likewise doesn’t always overindex on Marvel, but it loves its Ana and Christian, and that was an impediment at open whereFifty Shades Freed dominated the No. 1 spot for the 2nd weekend in a row in what is that film’s top market.

The holds in Asia will be ones to watch, and the jury is still out on whether this movie means films with predominantly Black casts will all of a sudden be guaranteed big numbers overseas, an issue we addressed before offshore play started. We’ll know more about front-loading this coming weekend, and the ultimate test will be China beginning March 9. Russia opens tomorrow, followed by Japan the following week and then China.

There's One Black Panther Deleted Scene Ryan Coogler Fought Hard to Keep in the Film

p27i6hcmooz503tofoj6.jpg

One of the bittersweet things about seeing Black Panther is realizing that the movie being shown in theaters isn’t the long-rumored four hour-long cut Ryan Coogler is said to have submitted to Marvel at one point. But there’s at least one scene we really would have liked to have seen included.

It isn’t uncommon for these kinds of movies to go through extensive edits, but with a movie as densely-packed with sumptuous scenes as Black Panther, you can’t help but wonder just what all was ultimately left on the cutting room floor. During a recent interview with Empire, Black Panther executive producer Nate Moore discussed a number of key moments that were either written and/or shot but didn’t make it into the film and there’s one in particular that both he and Coogler fought before agreeing to let go in order to keep Black Panther’s pacing tight.

The relationship between Okoye and W’Kabi is one of Black Panther’s more understated narrative elements, but it plays a somewhat key role in the movie’s penultimate battle between the Dora Milaje and the Border Tribe who’ve pledged their allegiance to Erik Killmonger.

According to Moore, at one point in the movie, there’s a scene before the battle in which Okoye and W’Kabi discuss their conflicting views about the Wakandan usurper that would have both emphasized their relationship and foreshadowed their showdown. He said on Empire’s podcast:

”So in the film it is more than hinted at that they’re a couple, but there is a scene directly after Killmonger takes the throne where you hear both characters articulate their point of view as to why they should or shouldn’t follow this man and it’s one of the most well-acted scenes I’ve ever been a part of.

Unfortunately it occurred at a point in the movie where audiences just wanted to get to the resolution and so it slowed down a part of the movie and we were afraid audiences were checking out. We were also afraid if we took it out we’re going to ruin this movie—‘guys we’re going to ruin this movie; let’s not take it out.’ We didn’t take it out for three or four screenings and we finally took it out and I think Ryan and I were probably the last men on that beach saying don’t take it out.”

As disappointing as it may be to know that one of the most well-acted scenes of the movie was axed, Moore also added that it will be a part of Black Panther’s extras when the movie’s released on DVD at some point in the future. But until then we’ll just have to make due with watching the (still phenomenal) movie as is.

i ain't trolling, but the original 'star wars' (1977) is a classic motion picture; and still discussed four decades later.

'black panther' (and why such an ominous title?) will be long forgotten (within a fortnight) when the novelty fades.

Actually you are trolling. Why was a movie about Thor titled Thor? Why was a movie about Iron Man titled Iron Man? Why was a movie about The Hulk titled The Hulk? Why was a movie about Spider Man, Superman etc titled after the main character?

‘Black Panther’ Reveals Black Audiences’ Box Office Superpower
Jeff Green, Jordyn Holman and Anousha Sakoui

  • Major African-American cities outpaced U.S. in record debut
  • Black audiences have clamored for more representation in film

"Black Panther" Sets Record With $235 Million Opening

It’s been clear for months that black audiences would show up for “Black Panther,” the first big superhero movie with a predominantly black cast. The weekend put a finer point on that enthusiasm, with $242 million in domestic box-office sales buoyed by African American audiences, especially in major black cities.

Theater revenue was up 56 percent over the weekend average in Atlanta, 31 percent in Washington and 81 percent in Memphis, according to Walt Disney Co., which distributed the film from its Marvel Studios division. The numbers are especially remarkable considering that people of color also probably traveled farther to see the film -- many more than once -- because historically, there are fewer theaters in predominantly African American neighborhoods.

For theaters suffering 25-year attendance lows, “Black Panther” is a shot in the arm. “For us it was one of the biggest movie openings for sure,” said Ahmed Anwar, who runs the historic Kent Theater in Brooklyn with his wife. “Everybody had a very positive reaction toward the movie and enjoyed it very much.”

“Black Panther” is the latest and biggest in a series of recent hits that feature black actors in major roles, like “Hidden Figures” and “Get Out.” People of color make up a disproportionate number of what the Motion Picture Association of America calls “frequent moviegoers” -- people who go to the movies once a month or more. Among African Americans in particular, the number of frequent moviegoers is up 27 percent since 2012. (That number is down 21 percent among white audiences.)

“What’s unique about “Black Panther” is that it is a tentpole film,” said Darnell Hunt, a professor and dean of social sciences in the sociology department at the University of California, Los Angeles. “It’s your classic superhero, big-budget, big box-office film. Until this point, you would never see a film like that with a black lead and a majority black cast.”

Claiming Wakanda
That’s made “Black Panther” a cultural touchstone among African-American audiences, who for years have lobbied Hollywood for more diverse films. A YouGov.com survey, for instance, found that about three-quarters of black respondents planned to see the movie, compared with less than half of whites.

“Everyone is claiming Wakanda,” Vanessa Kelly, a spokeswoman for the Urban League of Greater Atlanta’s guild group, said of the film’s fictional kingdom. Kelly attended a Feb. 15 screening with about 150 of the organization’s members, many in West African-inspired prints or dressed all in black like the title character. “We’re all just claiming Wakanda as a universal country. There was so much pride over the representation of seeing our culture on screen.”

annual report on African Americans in Hollywood. And the demand for representation has material consequences: movies that feature people of color in 20 percent to 40 percent of roles do better at the box office, according to Hunt, whose latest study is due out this month. Many moviegoers say they’ve already gone back to the theaters to relive the story, fueling even more sales for Marvel’s film. Kelly in Atlanta knows people who have watched “Black Panther” three times.

In Brooklyn, Anwar played “Black Panther” on the biggest of his three screens over the weekend. The Kent is the closest theater to several majority black neighborhoods, according to a Bloomberg analysis of U.S. census data and a list of more than 5,000 theaters from data provider InfoUSA.

After the opening weekend, experts say they’ll be watching for signs of extended success, especially in majority white areas and parts of the country with a history of racial intolerance.

“If the movie does awesome everywhere, this is good news,” said Ricard Gil, an associate professor at John Hopkins University Carey School of Business, who has studied the movie industry during the Jim Crow era. “If ‘Captain America’ does well in one location, there’s no reason ‘Black Panther’ shouldn’t do well in that location. Those are the same types of movies.”

Bigger Precedent
Longer term, movies like “Hidden Figures” may be the more important precedent for studios and audiences, said Mia Mask, a professor of theater at Vassar College who teaches classes on black movies and history. As recently as 2015, critically acclaimed dramas including “Fruitvale Station,” “Precious” and “Middle of Nowhere” struggled to reach audiences, she said.

“We want to make sure that African-American themed films and blockbuster films that have a predominantly black cast do well,” said Mask. “However, that argument relies so much on these individual blockbuster films, these rare opportunities, to carry the significance of black film and confirm the commercial viability of black films to studios.”

Disney’s next big-budget bet on diversity comes next month with the release of “A Wrinkle in Time,” directed by Ava DuVernay. Based on the 1962 book by Madeleine L’Engle, it follows the quest of a young girl through space and time, and features Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon. It opens on March 9.

i mentioned ominous becuz i was referring to huey newton, fred hampton, et al and their history.

i would've suggested 'wakanda' 4 the film's title.

Someone mentioned that we need a black sci-fi movie. What is going to prevent why white Hollywood from doing the, 'it might look like we're doing it but we're not really doing it' like Sony did by not promoting Taraji P Henson's Proud Mary
