Visa bans cryptocurrency-backed cards, leaving thousands in the lurch
  • Users are left scrambling to figure out how to access their money.
  • The cards were one of the few options for people who use them for day-to-day expenses.
Visa ended its relationship with a large cryptocurrency card provider on Friday, causing thousands of people's transactions to be declined and scrambling to figure out how to access their money.

The card provider, WaveCrest, confirmed in an email to CNBC that it was required "to immediately close all Visa cards."

"As a licensed E-Money Institution, WaveCrest is required to safeguard funds to cover all of its issued electronic money and we can confirm that these funds are safe and available for redemption through other channels," the statement read.

Visa, a payment network, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Wavecrest provided its services to a number of crypto-card companies, including Bitwala, Cryptopay, Wirex and TenX. These companies convert people's cryptocurrencies into cash that is loaded on to a prepaid card, allowing people to use the currency for everyday transactions.

Now these cards are invalid.

Dmitry Lazarichev, co-founder of cryptocurrency card company Wirex, said he's received thousands of calls from frantic customers. He said his company has issued some 500,000 cryptocurrency debit cards to people across the world, although not in the United States.

"All the cards were shut down in one second," Lazarichev said, adding that WaveCrest hasn't been responsive. "We asked for more information, but they haven't provided any."

TenX, another cryptocurrency card company affected, tried to reassure users.

One of the coins I was looking at TENX was affected by this. I was wondering if this is a good opportunity to jump in. They have some ex-paypal people working with it. so I can see them figuring something out.

The card I did invest in, Monaco (MCO) has done well, so even with a hit, I am ahead.

them european banks mustve seen a major decline in their cards usage....

crypto is not as popular here yet... so expect a lot of bank fuckery in the future when it picks up...

this is only a minor setback tho.... and just leaves more room for innovation.. cryptos were created to fuck over big banks

so this just will get the ball rollin faster...

and adds a big boost to privacy coins...

I can see big banks accepting crypto in the near future on their cards.. they just have to work out the quirks...

step number one eliminate the competition

they arent gonna let all this money bypass them

also a cheaper alternative depending on the type of coin wallet you use is a cheap android phone w/ no service plan...just wifi...I used to store my NEO and NEBL on android wallets prior to selling them...cheaper than the ledger nano s or blue and easier to replace if you have any issues
What app?

What app?

there’s no catch all app...it depends on the coin(s) you need a wallet for...if there’s an official app for a particular coin it will be offered on the company’s website...don’t use random apps in the app store or google play store bcuz most of those bootleg apps do not let you control the private keys to your wallet...the app should be offered directly from the company...what coin(s) do you need a wallet for?

Tron Overtakes Litecoin, Founders Take Jabs At Each Other On Twitter

Figureheads of two of the hottest cryptocurrencies on the planet took some passive-aggressive jabs at one another on Twitter Inc(NYSE: TWTR) Thursday as investors try to sort through the dozens of billion-dollar digital currencies to determine which ones will be long-term winners.

It started when Litecoin creator Charlie Lee gave his take on TRON…the movie.

Of course, Lee’s comments were actually a thinly veiled swipe at popular cryptocurrency Tron, which has come out of the woodwork in recent weeks to become one of the seven largest global cryptocurrencies by market cap.

The price of Tron is up 480 percent in the past week and nearly 10,000 percent in the past month. Tron ’s market cap now stands at a staggering $13.8 billion. The price of Litecoin, on the other hand, is up a relatively modest 3.9 percent in the past week and 146 percent in the past month.

Despite the gains, Tron leapfrogged Litecoin in market cap for the first time this week, bumping Litecoin down to No. 8 on the list of top cryptocurrencies by market cap.

Tron founder Justin Sun quickly fired back at Lee on Twitter for selling his personal stake in Litecoin.

I bought little more than 300,000 KIN last month. The upside is there for this one. Just hold it.

Coinbase is killing me. Two transactions that have been pending since 4am EST. They really need to get it together. Is there a reputable alternative for card transfers?
where did you buy it at? and how did you buy?

Visa and them ain't stupid. These cards kill with fees and they get action behind that. Who knows why they did this. Probably just don't want cards issued to just any companies popping up.

FYI. If you have purchased a Nano S or any other hardware wallet from non authorized sellers if it comes with the seed already configure or some shit like this don’t use it.

Damn. Gots to be more careful.

I sEt mine up last night. Works really slick. Moved everything over except my KIN. Waiting on the TX to complete now.

Man I scrambled and bought some kin coin yesterday without really doing any homework on them.... Now I finally have the time to do some research... And the total supply is RIDICULOUS.... Like what the fuck was this nigga thinking...

hope you kept it man

Does this mean we gettin to 200$ this year so I can get my Acura?

What's the highest you think this coin can reach with it's market cap? I made a few thousand off it already. I'm wondering sound I take some profits and reinvest it in another coin. (Example SALT, OMG, or Funfair)
