Stephanie Mills: “They want R&B, but they don’t want it from us”

There's some truth to that. And Black radio just opens their doors wide open to Adele even though she never even goes to one station for interviews.

I hate to say it but Tyrese if all people made that point when his last album dropped. Here he is , crossover movie star , couldn't get into pop stations , but when Adele drops, she walks right in, even though she's singing RNB. And black radio stations throw her right into rotation. Oh well.

And Iggy Azeala rapping, runs right on to pop radio. And Urban stations just gave her mad run, then shocked when they find out she thinks like most white people lol. We gotta start vetting folks like the vet our artists.

The doors flew open for Adele ( and Amy Winehouse for that matter ) when Lauryn decided to go crazy.

You can’t tell me that Chasing Pavements couldn’t have been a classic Lauryn song.

When you don’t own the radio stations you can’t really complain. Yes renters have rights, but to pretend the courts aren’t stacked for the landowners is pretty ridiculous.

If you own your own shit, you can make the rules.

this record would fit right in with the WBLS/ 98.7 KissFM playlist back in 1988

This is true and very disappointing. It doesn't matter as much since we no longer own any of the radio stations. It's them not deciding to put us in rotation.

Same shit when Eminem came out.
Rock stations were playing him when they never played rap

I'm out the loop like crazy. Who still listens to the radio on a regular basis for music? My kids have all their music downloaded, as do I. Our black radio station is 107.9, and even the young chicks I know don't have that shit on in their cars or at home. They all have their own playlists. Back in the early 2000s it was a different story though.

After seeing her in the Wiz,it was hard seeing her as a regular performer. .

She had a powerful voice though

Lol now people wanna get technical. I'm speaking of STATIONS OR PROGRAMS WITH PROGRAMMING GEARED TOWARDS BLACK LISTENERS- You know the thing they call URBAN in radio.

In atlanta , where I live, it's V103, 104.7 ad shit like that. Radio isnt what it once was but people do still listen to it and the point is, even with what influence they do have, even if it were none, I gave examples of how they choose to use their ok platforms.

So I guess Jill Scott, Erykah, India Arie, and millions of other Black singers who aren't Lauren Hill didn't count. Black radio all depended on one artist lol.

And no, I don't think Chasing pavements was a classic Lauren song.

I didn't even say I don't like Adele.

Point is, Black people run to her, but she never reaches out to the Black platforms.

In order for a Black artist to be played on a pop format, they have to be NUMBER ONE for WEEKS on the Black music charts first and even then MAYBE.

A white artist can get play day one for all audiences and never ever even stop by for an interview with Black taste makers. Some do , like that guy Ed Sheeran, but it's his choice to.

Its that simple as that! She should have also said our own people don't support their artist!

She looks damn good though!
I'd tear her 60 year old ass up. I smashed a 55 last week. What's 5 more years...AND I'm delivering a facial like I always do

Radio sucks...I was at a Dr's office for a long time and they had the local R&B station on.
Same stuff over and over again...
They ran Adele and that other chic Trainor into the ground...at least several times a hour.

I don't see how the employees could work there listening to that.

Couldn't wait to pop in a podcast or audiobook or my own playlist.

Btw I only get music off spotify and friends or just internet platforms but I do also watch the breakfast club, sway, and hot 97. All radio stations and I like watching interviews. I at least learn about new artists that way. Sometimes I watch a person and never listen to their music. I been meaning to check out Rapsody for a while now and I heard of her through those platforms. Still havent lol
