Stephanie Mills: “They want R&B, but they don’t want it from us”

There's some truth to that. And Black radio just opens their doors wide open to Adele even though she never even goes to one station for interviews.

I hate to say it but Tyrese if all people made that point when his last album dropped. Here he is , crossover movie star , couldn't get into pop stations , but when Adele drops, she walks right in, even though she's singing RNB. And black radio stations throw her right into rotation. Oh well.

And Iggy Azeala rapping, runs right on to pop radio. And Urban stations just gave her mad run, then shocked when they find out she thinks like most white people lol. We gotta start vetting folks like the vet our artists.
White people run those stations bruv. DJs are glorified playlist shufflers.

I'm out the loop like crazy. Who still listens to the radio on a regular basis for music? My kids have all their music downloaded, as do I. Our black radio station is 107.9, and even the young chicks I know don't have that shit on in their cars or at home. They all have their own playlists. Back in the early 2000s it was a different story though.

yeah 107.9 when it was wdmt is all we ever listened to. i hated wzak back then because they were good for cutting a song off halfway for a commercial. now it's the 64gb usb drive or xm satellite radio for me in the car

Btw I only get music off spotify and friends or just internet platforms but I do also watch the breakfast club, sway, and hot 97. All radio stations and I like watching interviews. I at least learn about new artists that way. Sometimes I watch a person and never listen to their music. I been meaning to check out Rapsody for a while now and I heard of her through those platforms. Still havent lol

I didn't know who Adele was until a BGOL post.

Hell.

We don't even want R&B from US!!!
But the music from US that passes as R&B/Soul is soul-less, Brain-Dead, and at times disgusting.
And the songwriting is some lowest common denominator shit.

Smokey Robinson always said that a good song has to have a beginning, a middle, and an end.
We're in a society in which most people can't even speak a complete sentence.
That translates to music.
And it's probably by design.

BTW...
Stephanie still GOT IT!!!
I saw her when she did "THE WIZ" on Broadway during the late 70s.
And when she did that appearance as Auntie Em in the NBC broadcast a few years ago,
That Sista had me crying.
I still have a crush on her decades later.

So I guess Jill Scott, Erykah, India Arie, and millions of other Black singers who aren't Lauren Hill didn't count. Black radio all depended on one artist lol.

And no, I don't think Chasing pavements was a classic Lauren song.

I didn't even say I don't like Adele.

Point is, Black people run to her, but she never reaches out to the Black platforms.

In order for a Black artist to be played on a pop format, they have to be NUMBER ONE for WEEKS on the Black music charts first and even then MAYBE.

A white artist can get play day one for all audiences and never ever even stop by for an interview with Black taste makers. Some do , like that guy Ed Sheeran, but it's his choice to.
Do black stations control their playlist?

How do you make money off a movie with a $100,000 budget? You shoot porn, a slasher horror, or an exploitation that gets a lot of attention and appeals to peoples' base instincts.

Same thing applies to music. All of the songwriting and production resource go to so-called "Blue eyed soul" artists and Black artists are left with the crumbs.

She's correct on everything she said but, there is a BUT we as black people need to support our artist, buy tickets to their shows, replace cd's with downloaded digital music and expose the younger generation to the music before us,that's how you keep it alive;I know about a lot of artist because my family has an album collection and music played in my house and car from friday til late sunday evening's,I was expose to everything from Johnnie Taylor to Prince,Beres Hammond,Barrington Levy and MTV helped with the Boy George's,Paul Simmon's, and Billy Ocean.

We dictate what's cool, they just follow, don't let em take what we have away because there's no monetary value that can match our talent, our beauty and what we've bring and have brought to the table.

So I'm going to Chime in...

Here is the thing. There are hundreds maybe thousands of Straight up legit Black R&B soul singers in the game now... That we as a people just ignore.

I'll use the music thread as an Example... Chantae Caan dropped one of the best Smooth R&B albums of the year... Only 7 replies and 140 review.

Taite Imogen... Young black chick from UK.. dropped an amazing EP this year.... 3 comments, 56 views. Eric Roberson... 12 Comments, 238 views, Emeli Sande 4 comments, 118 views... Curtis Harding 4 comments, 89 views

All of the albums are just a sample of current black artists that dropped phenomenal PURE R&B albums and this BLACK Board ignores them..

While....

Chris Brown -- Heartbreak on a Full Moon... 31 comments 723 views.

So who is the Real "THEY" that Stephanie is talking about.

I'm not even trying hard to find this shit that I post. It's easy to find and it's not like some of the people that I post aren't supported by their labels.....

But Radio doesn't play this type of music, because we aren't trying to hear or support this type of music.

I'm just being real on this topic....

If you want Proof... Just go to the music board and check the views.

yeah -very few are under local control

Since the telecommunications act of ‘96 black owned stations have virtually disappeared. Money from private equity rushed in and radio consolidated, and so did radio playlists. This is part of th reason why we don’t have a voice anymore. No media control... at least before we had a little.

Amen! god bless sister Stephanie Mills, I loved her music then and love her truth now!

I agree with this as well. It's mad complex but it doesn't have to be. We just all over the place.

I knew one of the Diehards from the Thread would back me up on Ekkah.

I've been waiting for a fucking LP since 2014.

ALL THIS

Dude pulled out the receipts ON BGOL. Numbers don't lie - not here, not on radio. Let's be clear, if you want "real" R&B in 2017 you need a streaming subscription cause radio ain't the place.

And like another poster said - melodic rap killed modern black R&B - there wasa good article about it on Rolling Stone - R&B's Changing Voice: How Hip-Hop Edged Grittier Singers Out of the Mainstream

Facts!

It makes me realize that white people have been actively looking to duplicate, replicate, and impersonate black music for centuries!!!
