It's expensive to manufacture shoes especially for a new company. The up front orders was needed to gauge how many pairs to make and possibly there to front the production cost.
And no I didn't order a pair nor do I think they should be $500.

Six months ago they only had a few prototypes, to deliver possibly thousands of shoes six months later is actually a pretty good timeframe from order to completion.
Steph Curry debuted his Under Armour Steph Curry 4's in The Finals back in June. Some stores/sites have gotten them and shipped them early but Under Armour's website states that the shoes will ship 11/18/17.
