Madden bought the NFL licence the following year.

Nah madden still outsold 2k5 even at $50 vs $20. I remember the stats in one of the many 2K5 vs madden threads back in the day i think xbox was the only platform it topped madden

Not in numbers per-say but it was clearly the better product. It made EA pony up a fuck ton of money and buy the NFL license out right.
They saw what was coming and wanted no part of 2K.
Hell NBA Live is so fucked off one year they didn't even put one out cause they knew they couldn't compete.
Madden is like McDonalds, if you're on every street corner you don't have to have the best burgers.

I dont know man even at $50 vs $20 Madden still outsold 2K5 3 to 1...and it wasnt like 2k was a new game the price point was but how long were they going to keep it at $20....Hell if anyting it was a great business move on Maddens part to buy the License

The price point was just to get people not familiar with the series on. The game is critically acclaimed and won sports simulator of the year award that year.
Hell Madden still deals with the ghost of 2k5 to this day.

So i'd be with you on the Boss Move if EA pulled that early on in the 90's but it took them 15 years total and 5 years into 2K being a thing until the decided to buy the license out right.
Either they were shook by a superior product or they didn't have the money to buy the license until 2005.

2k5 was a taste of what was coming and EA sports wanted no part of that. Just look at NBA2K series, it stays fucking EA money up basketball wise.

Madden still outsold the $20 game that year. And to add insult to injury bought the license but it wasn't EA's fault. The NFL wanted only 1 publisher and 2k ain't had the money

There wasn't an option to the buy the license before 2006. Rodger Goodell approved the purchase.
Madden has a loyal Die Hard fan base plus the fact you could connect it with my personal favorite NCAA....Doubt anyone lost sleep over 2k5....but i suppose it doesn't matter anymore....
And no competition is a bad thing cuz NBA2k is getting lazy probably going to skip 2018
