Wonder Woman: Discussion thread (spoilers)

This guy (David Edelstein) is a straight jackass :hmm:…. Who doesn’t know ‘jack shit’ about comic book characters… and should NEVER receive a ‘paycheck’ to review ANY superhero movies. :smh: At all.

This ‘comment’ was posted below his recent Wonder Woman review, which VERY ACCURATELY sums up his worthless movie opinions.

“Here's a typical Edelstein superhero-movie review. He doesn't generally like the genre, so he doesn't understand what people who do find appealing about it.”

david-edelstein.jpg

See for yourself…

Check out his review of The Dark Knight (with Heath Ledger) :smh:

http://nymag.com/movies/reviews/48514/

QUOTE: “Nolan appears to have no clue how to stage or shoot action.” :hmm:

C’mon son. That’s absurd. :hmm:

If I was his Editor-in-Chief... I would SMACK FIRE right outta his jawbone for handing this bullshit article in, right before the 'deadline'. :hmm: Then hand him a 'pink slip'.... and swiftly kick him in his 'back pockets' on his way out the door.
-----------------------------
And his review of the Avengers :hmm:

http://nymag.com/movies/reviews/avengers-five-year-engagement-2012-5/

QUOTE: “Multiple protagonists means that by the time you’ve had your fill of snotty Iron Man you get the wooden Captain, and when you’re bored with the Captain, you get the Norse hottie.” :hmm:

-----------------------------
And his review of Civil War :smh:

http://www.vulture.com/2016/04/movie-review-captain-america-civil-war.html

QUOTE: “The best way to think of Captain America: Civil War is as a toy box in which the sheer quantity of toys partly makes up for the lack of anything new. But the big takeaway is worrisome. Marvel has created a universe teeming with superheroes who simply don’t have enough to do. They’re all suited up with nowhere to go.” :hmm:

-----------------------------
And his review of Winter Soldier :hmm:

http://www.vulture.com/2014/04/review-captain-america-the-winter-soldier.html

QUOTE: “In the martial-arts-heavy fight scenes, the frames are too tight for my taste — they’re rock-‘em-sock-‘em blurs.“ :smh:

QUOTE: “The FX-swollen climax is too long and repetitious — it lacks elegance. How many times can the Captain throw his mighty shield before you think, Ho hum? The filmmakers introduce yet another action hero — Falcon (Anthony Mackie) — who adds nothing but fake-looking swoops and more clutter, and the fight between the Captain and the mysterious, deadly assassin the Winter Soldier goes on and on with diminishing returns.” :hmm:

-----------------------------

Bottom line, Edelstein is one of those: “I think I’m EDGY... just because I shit on everything that becomes very popular”... types of Movie Critics, who tries real hard to be a 'contrarian'... just to get some attention.

This guy's worse than Harry Knowles(owner of AICN)

This was a response to complaints that the villain was weak, just wanted to bring it to the spoiler discussion:

As far as weak villian I really blame WB and its woeful handling of this movie.

Those who follow comics early found out ares was going to be the villain. The movie tried to do a good job of miss direction, BUT...

WB FUCKED IT UP ANNOUNCING AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR THEY CAST PROFESSOR LUPIN AS THE MAIN VILLAIN?!?

why would you do this when peep had already picked up that Ares was going to be the bad guy behind the scenes?!?

Here is the thread were it was 1st revealed:

I totally missed this thread, so the misdirected reveal worked on me. That was incredibly stupid to reveal though, as that was a good moment in the film.

I see what you mean..

However, WB didn't 'announce it' themselves. :smh:
The website called Batman-News 'leaked it'.

That makes a big difference.

This guy (Chris Begley) runs the Batman News website.

chris-batmannews.jpg

  • Seems he & his contributors went to different 'wrap parties' for the Wonder Woman movie.
  • They also went to 'test screenings' and probably paid the audience participants for any details they could remember about the movie.
  • Plus they have 'behind the scenes' photos of the cast that could only have been taken by crew members, or people who work on the set.
So basically, Chris was 'working very hard'.... and going really far out of his way.... to spoil certain details of the movie.

He is the type of 'unrecognizable' / unassuming white guy who just doesn't stand out. :smh:

So he could stroll right into a Hollywood 'Wrap Party' like a big shot, just by holding his cellphone up to his ear outside a venue & say something like: "I'm with Warner Brothers" or "I work for Marvel" ...and I'd bet NONE of the security folks would ever stop him :smh: or even slow down his stride to ask him for some ID...

mainly because he looks like a guy who probably 'pays all the bills on a movie set'.

Or he looks like 'the SON of the guy who pays all the bills on a movie set'.

This dude would 'blend right in' at any local bar, or restaurant, or movie lot.

First half - three quarters of the movie was pretty good. But the ending seemed a bit rushed. The movie was also too long at 2hr 21min. Overall I'd give it a B minus.

Wonder Woman was definitely kicking some ass in this movie tho. Straight up destroying mothafuckas.

Damn...

I have never been so happy to see a bunch of rich entitled white folks smile.

Finally DC/WB be happy...you got one.

Funny how it took women (actress & director) to save this whole thing from continuing to be a fan disappointment and critical failure.

Now just don't go f*cking all this good will up.

Today you are champions.

Sidebar...

Wakanda is rising.

My biggest issue is the complete lack of an end credits scene. I mean you put one in Suicide Squad for zero reason but none in this one... the movie that is the lead up to the first attempt at a live action Justice League movie. This was just a wasted opportunity and it squandered the good will that this movie will generate because now it feels like Wonder Woman is just a separate flick...

Since they didn't do a scene they will most likely plaster Wonder Woman all over the promos for JL, since her movie is so well received and use that momentum for JL. At least should have thrown Batman in a post credit scence.

DC continues to be frustrating as f*ck...

They seem to be incapable of CLOSING the deal.

Well to be fair.... Patti Jenkins already made the 'tie-in' you are looking for... right from the jump.

Because this whole Wonder Woman movie STARTS OFF with a big 'nod' to the Justice League movie.... when Diana arrives at the museum (in present day) and receives a briefcase from 'Wayne Enterprises'.... which contains the very same Black & White photo of her that Bruce Wayne found in BvS.

Plus they even had a 'call back' to it when they show how the photo was actually taken, in that small village.

That whole 'introduction scene' lasted a lot longer than any single 'end credit scene' might have. :dunno:

My guess >> what Joss Whedon will most likely do is... include another 'call back' scene in the Justice League movie to show how Bruce got hold of the 'original' printed photo... that he sent over in the briefcase to Diana. :dunno:

Notice, Bruce Wayne never sent her a 'photo printout' off his computer :smh:... He sent the 'real photo' that the photographer took himself.

So I have a strong feeling Joss Whedon will tie it all together somehow.

thats not really accurate
Ummm...

If dc/WB doesn't somehow someway make this object of perfection a lead in her own movie like perhaps the wonder woman sequel?

They lost.

Sidebar: this woman makes me want to be a better man.
you should know better - the lady is bad - but you're expecting DC to capitalize by thinking outside the box.... seems masochistic on your part

she's gave that box up with no problem. i like the chemistry with her and chris pine's character. i didn't really care about the villian and how she defeated him. good flick though. ann wolfe looks like an amazon for real.

This was a good movie, way better than BVS and Suicide Squad (so what, i really liked Man of Steel). She becomes easily the best DC character of all the justice league members so far. Had some humor as well. Could have done without the whole "i love you" part (they just fucking met), but it was good. I'd watch again.

So now my only question is, how did Lex end up with that picture?

Just got out of it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were some issues with it but nothing major. Still would give it a 4 out of 5.
The villains being weak complaint didn't bother me because I saw the twist coming the second they said the other guy was playing Ludendorff. I knew they wouldn't let the actual historical character be Ares.
The only truly weak point in the movie was that dumb ass shopping for new clothes montage. :hmm:
I would honestly say Wonder Woman > Captain America the First Avenger. I loved the WWI setting and how it never felt too comic-booky. The movie didn't shy away from showing the ugliness of war. Even with a superhero there, war is still brutal as fuck.

I find it hiliarous that the only good DCEU film is the one that is a complete standalone film instead of being a 2 hour commercial for Justice League.
Like maybe DC/Warners could learn something. Maybe take time to properly develop their characters in a single movie instead of worrying about the big movies to come. Or how properly developing characters can make us actually give a shit about the movie.

I guess we can dream .... That Justice League trailer still looks like shit though. :(

Fox News Mulls Over Whether Wonder Woman Is ‘American’ Enough
Thank Zeus someone is asking the important questions.

By Hilary Hanson

As “Wonder Woman” garners stellar ratings and remains on track for a record-breakingopening weekend, a Fox News panel is conducting a deep dive into a critical matter: Is the Amazonian princess American enough?

Fox host Neil Cavuto noted on Friday to guest Dion Baia that “some” have been taking issue with the film’s alleged lack of patriotism — chiefly, that the superhero’s costume color scheme is too un-American.

Gal Gadot rocks her Wonder Woman costume that features an emblem of an eagle, which is, you know, a major symbol for the United States.
“Some are calling it less American, Dion, because, well, her outfit isn’t red, white, and blue, and, in order to appeal for foreign audiences, very little reference to America at all,” said the “Your World With Neil Cavuto” host.

“I think, nowadays, sadly, money trumps patriotism,” Baia replied. “Especially, recently, I personally feel like we’re not really very patriotic, the country, in a certain sense. And they want these movies to succeed internationally, you know, so they’re going to dial back.”

Fellow guest Mike Gunzelman lamented that he feels “it’s cool to hate America these days.”

Baia, for his part, said his comments have been misconstrued. “Taken outta context much?” he tweeted Saturday, referencing an Entertainment Weekly article that characterized him as being “upset” with the movie (probably because he used the word “sadly.”)

He maintained he was simply explaining why he believes the movie’s American patriotism was “toned down.”

Fox News Hosts Upset 'Wonder Woman' Isn't American Enough
The fictional character is of Amazonian descent, FWIW

But in any case, criticism of Gadot’s costume as not looking “American” is a little weak.

A red, blue and gold color combination is still fairly reminiscent of the American flag. Gold is often incorporated into patriotic decorations and accessories, and sometimes used in place of white.

The original comic and Lynda Carter’s iconic Wonder Woman costume from the 1970s TV series both included more gold than white.

Was Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman American enough?
Yes, Gadot’s Wonder Woman is not wearing a bottom piece adorned with little white stars, but she is wearing a top with an emblem of an eagle, which is, you know, a major symbol for the United States.

Plus, the actual plot of the movie involves Wonder Woman teaming up with an American pilot to stop German forces, which makes equating it with “hating America” a bit of a stretch.

Whatever. There have been worse takes on the movie.

Fox News can eat a bag of elephant dicks. They're so busy pretending to cosign all of Agent Orange's bullshit that they have to make up shit to be outraged by. I'm surprised that they didn't find a way to blame her costume on Obama.

The more I see it... the more it looks like POO..

Fucking Cyborg looks beyond Poo..... He looks like the stuff in the intestines waiting to become shit. He is Pre-shit.
Seeing the CG on Cyborg face on the big screen definitely made that movie look like absolute shit. I pray to God that they are still working on rendering the CG out. And populating the world because the trailer makes it look like Bats and Aquaman are fighting parademons in the bombed out ruins of WWII.

Man Joss ain't adding all that shit in this movie.... They finished the film last year. Now they are in Post Production. Joss just came on a couple weeks ago... We should all be worried if they are still adding shit.

As for the photo... The call back to the photo was a tie-in to Batman vs. Superman... but we already knew that. We knew when we saw that photo in BVS what Wonder Woman was going to be about and who was in it. But....we don't have any set up for Justice League..... Nothing..

They could have added one scene showing that Ares wasn't dead and have him attempting to whisper to Steppenwolf because Ares loves conflict and unlike the others Steppenwolf shrugs off Ares and says that he only answers to 1 true voice.... BAM!!!!

One scene... instantly raises Steppenwolf to someone potentially mightier then Ares and Steppenwolf's boss as someone even more powerful. The Scene would have taken maybe 5 to 10 seconds...

Wait. Hol Up.... Put yourself in Steve Trevor's shoes for a second.

Let's recap....

- You are in the Military.
- A sexy, beautiful VIRGIN saves you from 'drowning to death' on Monday morning.
- Then deflects some bullets on the beach & saves your ass AGAIN (for the 2nd time), Monday afternoon.

- Before your Commanding Officers consider you AWOL… you tell her you gotta get back to the War.
- She tells you, “I’m coming with you” by Monday night.
- On your way back to base, she asks you to sleep with her (or just spoon her) on Monday night.
- You refrain & decide to take it slow…
- But then take her shopping on Tuesday.
- She got some style. But she’s a little bit clumsy in heels. (You think its cute.)
- Then she saves your life again (for a 3rd time) in an alley fight.
- And she blocks ‘point blank’ gunfire off her forearms, from several shooters.
- So you introduce her to your pals, on Tuesday night.
- And you find out she can speak over 100+ different languages.
- Your buddies are all smitten by her. Some are just awestruck.
- Then she wins a bar fight. Singlehandedly.
- And leads you & your boys to the ‘frontlines’ of a World War.
- Where she charges the enemies with NO FEAR.
- Deflecting bullets, bombs & heavy mortar shells.
- Which allows a brigade or 2 of ‘friendly troops’ to finally make some progress.
- Then she BUMRUSHES several platoons of enemy soldiers. All by herself.
- Plowing through them all like a bulldozer over a straw hut.
- She almost knocks down a whole fucking building. Without blinking.
- And remains completely unhurt through it all.
- When all the mayhem subsides… you share a romantic dance.
- And take a few selfies.

- By now…. she’s on your dick. Something crazy.
- The passion is building between you two.
- You know it. She knows it. Your homeboys know it.
- And you can tell… if you just ask.. she will let you HIT THAT ASS. As much as you want.

- By now, you realize she is the ULTIMATE ‘ride or die’ type of chic.

- But its back to business...
- And this chic proceeds to ‘layout’ all kinds of BUSTERS in your path.
- Everywhere you go.
- Effortlessly.

- Then you look down at your watch…. and you realize….

its only Wednesday.

So, ahh… er, ummm… how long do you wait before you tell her… “i think I love you, girl”? :o
Another week? Another month? Another year? :dunno:

All that shit she done is not good enough... to 'earn some love'? :dunno:

What ELSE she gotta prove? :dunno:
That’s she’s willing to 'pay for dinner' too? :dunno:

:lol::roflmao2::roflmao3::roflmao::lol:

Just jokes, fam. :D
Glad you enjoyed the movie. :D

I see your point and it would have been good if they did that.
However DC Comics movies aren't known for their end credit scenes.

My biggest issue is the complete lack of an end credits scene. I mean you put one in Suicide Squad for zero reason but none in this one... the movie that is the lead up to the first attempt at a live action Justice League movie. Okay peeped it today, rock solid flick and now DC is a contender. :D It was basically a cute, girly action flick with heart. Chris Pine was actually good for once and Gal was really solid, enjoyed the team as well. My only gripe was the final fight, WB still can't end their hero flicks properly, you could almost hear an announcer saying "BOSS BATTLE, FINAL STAGE" "FIGHT!!!!!" on some Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat shit or something.:p:rolleyes2: Anyway three and a half stars from me (*** 1/2) good show.

Everyone talking about the villain wasn't hashed out... Man that's majority of comic book movies.

Movies are just too short to give the hero and the villain some solid development.

Only movies with good villains to me:

The Dark Knight
Spiderman 2
Avengers (Only bc they had a couple of movies to develop Loki)
Suicide Squad (Amanda Waller was well done)

Plus, its the introduction movie... You have to establish the brand, flesh out the world the character lives in and develop the story. Thats a lot to do.

I think movies should focus on the character and setting in the first movie then drop hints to the main villain.

For instance:
This movie could have focused on WW I and Dr. Poison and revealing the influence of Ares.

Have him show up at the end with a big reveal after he kills WW's group except Steve Trevor. Then maybe show her facing off against Ares in WW 2 without Steve Trevor as he dies in the second movie trying to prevent the war but failing. End of WW I was like 1918, end of WW2 was 1945....but accuracy never stopped movies before. lol

Point is, it takes time to develop the hero, the world and the villain in 1 movie

My reason for saying that the villain was weak was that I felt as though we never got to truly see what makes Ares so powerful or to be feared throughout the movie nor did I really feel drawn in during the climactic fight with Wonder Woman. The animated movie did a much better job of showcasing what made Ares such a huge Wonder Woman villain. But on the flip side this is an all too common issue plaguing damn near every comic book movie as of late.

The other thing that I'm kind of disappointed in, but on a much lesser level, is that they never really delved more into why the Amazons tried to hide Diana from Ares. I felt like was given a false impression on what he would do with her and he didn't really do much to convince me that he was searching for her.

I think they should do a WW sequel and focus on the Amazons & Themiscyra, so they can delve further into Diana's other 'secrets' & powers.

The best way to do that would be to introduce her sister Circe as the main villain, who can reveal all kinds of unknown background info.

They could even bring Steve Trevor back from the dead with the powers of certain Gods (like Hephaestus) which would also provide background about how all the Amazons came into existence.

I could see this type of sequel intertwining with some of the God of War video game series, which is packed with common info derived from Greek Mythology.
