2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon: Everything We Think We Know

Dodge has been teasing a widebody, even-higher-performance version of the Challenger Hellcat. Here's every detail we know so far.

The day after all the motor journalists left the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Dodge dropped a delicious little tidbit on the internet. It was a brand-new pop-up website—ifyouknowyouknow.com—leading to a teaser video hinting at something high performance and evil: The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon.

And that's about all that Dodge has given us. So far, we haven't gotten any specs, or even any real details about the car, from the folks at Dodge. But we're here to read the tea leaves (or are they tire marks). Here's everything we think we know about the new Dodge Demon.

It's the widebody Challenger SRT Hellcat we've all been waiting for
For months now, rumors have been swirling that Dodge is planning some kind of widebody Challenger SRT Hellcat. Folks speculated that this lateral growth would allow Dodge to fit some seriously wide tires under the Challenger (recall that the regular Challenger SRT Hellcat makes do with a measly 275-width rear tire that can hardly stand up to the power even innormal daily driving).

There was even a guess at the ultra-Challenger's name: Challenger ADR, which, we were told, would stand for American Drag Racer. It would be a nod at another famous Mopar acronym, ACR, or American Club Racer, most recently seen on the most outrageously track-prepped Viper to roll off the assembly line.

Then we seemingly got visual confirmation from, of all places, a Fast & Furious movie trailer. Take a close look: There's a scene in this Fate of the Furious (aka Furious 8) trailer where the entire Toretto family drives a phalanx of flared, hood-scooped Challengers.

Update, 1/19/2017: And thenAutoweek discovered a behind-the-scenes video from the Furious 8 set that shows an even clearer view of the silver movie cars and, yep, those sure look like our SRT Demon:

Alongside the second teaser video, Dodge released a cutaway illustration. Take note of what's highlighted here: The steering system, big brakes hiding behind steamroller-width wheels front and rear, and some under-skin structural components hinting at weight reduction. It's also got a much wider hood scoop, quite similar to the one seen on the Fate of the FuriousChallengers. The evidence is stacking up.

It might offer some kind of Race Gas Mode
We know the Challenger SRT Demon will be built to drag race—the very first teasers warned readers that the Demon is for "a subculture of enthusiasts who know that a tenth is a car and a half second is your reputation." It sounds like they're talking about the quarter-mile, and maybe about the somewhat-illicit practice of racing for pink slips?

Here's where we tiptoe into the realm of speculation. Let's look again at the very first teaser video, "Cage."

Note the moment when they release the Michael Bay-lookin' creature from its cage. The hellish cat-machine stalks up to a racing-style quick-fill fuel can with a hazard label on it.

gallery-1484786119-demon5.jpg

Our mecha-hell-kitty takes a big bite out of the can, then lines up for some kind of robo-muscle-creature-car drag race.

This, of course, got folks all revved up on the idea that the SRT Demon will offer a specific engine mode for use with high-octane racing gas. It's not an entirely crazy thought: Forced-induction engines like the 707-horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V8 in the SRT Hellcat love added octane, and a tune specifically developed to take advantage of race gas could make for a nice boost in power. And, well, just look at the tagline on the pop-up website:

"High octane videos," you say?

And while we can't necessarily trust some random Instagrammers at their word, a few folks on the social media site seem to have caught a glimpse of a wider, fat-tired Challenger of some sort in various stages of uncovered.

Our guy Sinister_Z07, in particular, makes note of a "Race Gas" button, though he doesn't point out which button he's talking about. The other details add up, though. Notice how the wider hood scoop and the add-on fender flares jibe with both the Fate of the Furious cars and the cutaway rendering released by Dodge. And the wheel in Sinister_Z07's close-up looks mighty similar to the wheel in the constantly-looping burnout animation on ifyouknowyouknow.com:

As for the tires themselves? They sure look like Nitto NT05R drag radials to us. Check out the sidewall (of what we assume is a front wheel) in the Instagram post: You can see the Nitto logo.

It'll debut at the 2017 New York International Auto Show
Dodge is calling the Challenger SRT Demon a 2018 model, and has confirmed it will debut at the New York Auto Show in April. That leaves just eleven more weeks for Dodge to keep pelting us with Transformers-style teaser videos, each revealing perhaps a single component of what will be the ultimate Challenger Hellcat.

2018 Dodge Demon, 'Fast and Furious 8' timelines seem awfully close (Update)
scene-from-the-fate-of-the-furious_100584846_l.jpg

UPDATE: It's probably not a coincidence. Avideo has surfaced that shows Vin Diesel and a pair of Challengers with a Demon-looking badge visible on one of the cars. Picture below.

The latest season of "Sherlock" came to astrange close, so we're putting our deductive logic to the test if you don't mind.

"The Fast and the Furious" franchise is predicated on fast cars and Vin Diesel. The eighth installment, "The Fate of the Furious," arrives in theaters April 12. (Vin Diesel is already here, we think.)

The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is predicated on turning solid tires into noise and smoke. It arrives at the New York auto show on April 12.

We know there will be a wide-body Challenger in the new movie because we've seen it in the trailer. We know the movietakes place in New York, because Diesel said so.

The Dodge Demon will be a fast car. There's a movie about fast cars coming.

Hold on, I think I smell burnt toast.

Either way, we're pretty jazzed about the idea of seeing the Dodge Demon in person—and perhaps on the big screen—in April. No word from a Dodge spokesman about whether we've solved the case of the "Really Fast Car in a Movie About Really Fast Cars Coming Out at the Same Time" but we'll keep you updated.

Until then, we'll follow the breadcrumbs as Dodge drops them...

New Dodge Demon will be a hellacious muscle car

Dante, your new car is here.

Dodge is entering the next level of Hellcat.

The automaker has announced that it is bringing back its legendary Demon nameplate, this time as an even more powerful version of the 707 hp Challenger Hellcat muscle car.

The Challenger SRT Demon will make its debut at the New York International Auto Show in April.

Dodge says the car was built with one purpose in mind.

"The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is conceived, designed and engineered for a subculture of enthusiasts who know that a tenth is a car and a half second is your reputation," says Tim Kuniskis, Fiat Chrysler’s head of passenger car brands.

Think The Fast and The Ferocious.

The Challenger and Charger Hellcats were surprise hits for Dodge when they were launched in 2015. The company originally expected to sell less than 5,000 per year, but had to double production to keep up with demand.

1971 Dart Demon (Dodge)

2007 Demon Concept (Dodge)

The Demon name was first used on several high performance versions of the Dodge Dart built in 1971 and 1972, and last appeared on a two-seat convertible sports car concept unveiled in 2007.

Aside from the new logo, which is much more sinister-looking than the original’s devilish cartoon, pretty much zero details about the new Demon have been revealed so far, but will be teased out over the coming weeks in a series of videos posted to YouTube. Dodge says to keep an eye out for hidden clues, so we did.

The first depicts an animated, robotic Hellcat in a cage protected by action movie government types. In one shot, the front of the actual car is reflected in the sunglasses of one of the agents, and suggests that it may have two of the ram air intakes that the current Challenger Hellcat has built into the center of only its left headlight.

(Dodge)

Meanwhile, a GIF on the Demon’s website from a future video shows a tire that’s clearly wider than the current Hellcat’s doing a burnout inside flared fenders. This would mesh with recent spy photos of several widebody Challenger prototypes spotted on public roads.

Along with the Demon, Fiat Chrysler is expected to debut a Hellcat-powered version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV called the Trackhawk at the New York show.

2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Gets Massive Cold Air Intake

Should help boost Demon's power output far beyond the Hellcat
Dodge has released its fifth teaser video on the Challenger SRT Demon ahead of its debut at the New York auto show. This time, Dodge is showcasing the Demon’s one-of-a-kind Air Grabber cold air intake.

Dodge says the functional “Air Grabber” cold air intake hood is the largest ever installed on a production vehicle, measuring more than 45 square-inches. The model also features a large air box sealed to the hood scoop and two functional “Air Catcher” headlamps. The updates help increase airflow and drop the inlet air temperature by more than 30 degrees compared with the 707-hp Hellcat. In the latest teaser video, we see the flow path of the air through the cold air intake and supercharger.

Although Dodge hasn’t released any specs, the Demon is expected to be the fastest muscle car in the world, surpassing performance numbers for the Hellcat. Recently, Dodge revealed that the Demon is as much as 215 pounds lighter than its Hellcat sibling. Some of that savings comes from removing the standard front passenger and rear seats and eliminating the carpet. Further aiding performance, the Demon also benefits from significantly wider 18×11-inch wheels wrapped in Demon-exclusive 315-width Nitto NT05R drag radials.

Stay tuned for more on the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon leading up to the reveal in April. For now, watch the video below for a closer look at the cold air intake hood.

I was just talking about the Hell Cat the other evening with my ol lady and she was like lets get one but I was telling her I wanted to wait til all the bugs are worked on it and you post this shit....got damn man

This mf looks nice and sound great...Mopar is just using what it already had...the air grabber is all part of the Scat Pak shit back in the late 60's early 70's..its just new technology added to it.

The new technology is what I am leaning towards more now since im getting older...shit but they are doing like cell phones now...next year they will have a Silverback version our with better shit...

My Dodge Charger will be paid off in June.. thinking bout a SRT Charger or the lower priced Scat Pack

So 700bhp isn't enough?!
More horses?!
Will the car handle nicely?
Will the interior still be cheap and "Dodgey" like the hellcat?

i understand chrysler effort but they still dont get the point....but then again its gone to sell this joint is going to hav a long waiting list just to get one...

The target audience gor this car give "0" fucks about an interior... all they care about is...... a = (v2 - v1) / (t2 - t1),

Some dont understand this....

Trust me..there will be mfs who will want to add more and get that extra 10 or 15hp at the crank knowing damn well it won't transfer to the rear end...but to them hp is hp

Biggest issue with that car is the fact that everybody and their momma got some version of it. And it's too heavy. If they drop some weight they don't need much more horsepower.

Dropping weight would be the Hellcat they wanted huge car well the look

Come on man...you know regardless of anything horsepower is what sells

With 275 wide tires in the rear, hell yeah, they go fast in a straight line but can't handle for shit in any other way

That's why you get potenzas or a softer tire like the drag nitto....

However...you will be buying tired every 2 months...

Man i use to get the firestone firehawks....them mfs was nice but they stop mAking them

That's still not a wide enough tire and rim for all the HP on a RWD car, I'm running continental all season just for the longer treadwear anyway unless I just really want to hit the track, but they stick pretty good when they warm up. I don't understand dodge anyway, for a while they were running the 245s on the rear with scatpacks and srts:smh:

If you do get the revision 2016, 2017. Or stick to 392, Scat. To the dudes talking about how heavy the car is or how it looks inside you bugging. What y'all drive?:hmm: I put my foot in my A8 charger hellcat every chance I get and I guarantee you whatever you driving, whatever muscle you got or drive, you can't make it dig or move like I can my Hellcat. I'm all about that speed bawse. We can turn this into a bgol contest, just let me know when you in the Atl. I've never even remotely come close to crashing either unlike the corvettes. The demon will be at least 100 hp faster but and this is critical, it will be built for straight line and drag speed. Period. Now, after driving my Hellcat for over a year I can tell you it can get scary on curves. I'm talking cornhole scary. I can't imagine the demon cornering at 95+ without handling like a brick. I always downshift to at least 4-6 M on curves but once I'm out of the curve that supercharger be whining. Also, I wouldn't buy another Srt Car like this in the first run. I've had to replace the supercharger. 13k, but I got a 2015. All covered under warranty. The 2016 are supposed to be good.

Man some people don't understand if you have the right engine, trans and rear end you can tear some shit up regardless how heavy the car is.

What all have you added or deleted from it?

I ran up on one 5.0 on the toll road and he reved his engine up at me for a run, I didn't even put my shit in tracked mode and murdered him, now the scat pack and 392 challengers and M4's have given me good races.

Man them cats (white boys) in those M4s drive those things like its porcelain. I drive my HC like I stole it. Brutal. Don't know who the preppy white dude was but he jumped on 400 headed into Alpharetta with a M4. He wasn't about that life. I put about a mile and a half cushion between us. Let him think he was catching me then pull off. Cat and mouse, fox and hound. By the time he caught up I was decelerating and getting off the exit. He gave the thumbs up, I reciprocate and whispered tell yo friends about me!
