Al Jarreau is in the hospital in Los Angeles, due to exhaustion. He is receiving excellent medical care, responding to treatments, and improving slowly.

The medical team has instructed that he cannot perform any of his remaining 2017 concert dates.

Therefore, with complete sorrow, Al Jarreau must retire from touring. He is thankful for his 50 years of traveling the world in ministry through music, and for everyone who shared this with him - his faithful audience, the dedicated musicians, and so many others who supported his effort.

Ticket holders should contact their venue or point-of-purchase regarding refunds.

In response to the sad news, we wanted to share a few memories of the one and only, treasured and beloved, multi-instrumentalist – Alwin Lopez Jarreau.

We have been told that Al’s taking a well-earned break after five decades of bringing utter joy to the world. Unfortunately, there’s been a little bit of ‘Trouble in Paradise’ with his health, which means that probably for the first time in his life he has to think of himself and take a little rest.

The joyous relationship with Al and Marshall Arts began back in 1978 and what a fusion of styles Al brought to us; Soul, Jazz, Blues, Scat, Rock – it was all in there and was such a treat.

No one had heard anything like Take Five and over the following years Al just added more layers to his incredible interpretations of so many songs with amazing musicians, who, of course adore him. Al has the uncanny and legendary gift to mimic any instrument and has challenged many a great player.

Year after year Al has brought his magic. ‘Moonlighting’ was a wonderful time with the TV series credited as giving Bruce Willis his big break. Al seems to have been at the beginning of many things.

Whenever he walks into a room, he smiles and the sun comes out. He brings not only his talent, but a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. He has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation.

Indeed he worked as a rehabilitation counsellor in San Francisco – which shows his unselfish nature and tremendous care for others.

But it’s his music that had reached so many millions across the world. A great favourite at so many Festivals, he has been asked to return time after time to receive wonderful accolades.

His concerts are an amazing experience. There are simply too many amazing performances to mention. Montreux, Nordsee, Ronnie Scott’s, but the stand out was the fabulous night at Wembley Arena in 1984. Completely sold out and with very special guest David Sanborn. Footage of that night can still be seen online and sounds as fresh today as it did then.

He has been honoured with so many Awards throughout his Career, including many Grammys in different categories. In 2005 he won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album for ‘Accentuate The Positive‘ which seems so apt, given his absolute positivity.

It has been our tremendous privilege to share so many years with Al Jarreau. We know he truly deserves a little me time but we sincerely hope he’ll soon be home eating Cheerios whilst humming ‘Mornin’ in the kitchen. And of course the next step - let’s hope he’ll soon be dancing up on the roof.

Wherever he is and whatever he’s doing we, The Marshall Arts Family, hold him in our hearts with so much love and respect and really look forward to seeing him soon.

Hope he enjoys retirement he has earned it very underrated well known and respected
talent, hop BET or Soultrain does something big for him before he leaves us one day.

i saw him in a segment of black nouveau about a year ago, and i agree that he was looking rather ill.

didn't he collapse on stage in paris, france several years ago?

well brother al, here's to a full recovery from a fellow brew town native.
Saw him in an airport a little over a year ago. He looked sorta bad then.

I just downloaded one of his songs, After All, on iTunes. I hope we keep this one. Too many fucking deaths.

What's saddest is that too many artists (both old heads and new) don't plan for the future. Which in may cases leads to them being propped up and sent on tour anyway to keep the monies coming for their family. I see it all of the time. So many think that artists are super rich. Being in the industry I've found that some of my biggest "heros" are broke and being chased by the IRS and bill collectors more than your every day neighbor.

Al's one of my all-time faves. I wish him a speedy recovery, good health and a long life.
father time is undefeated. And performers live to perform. It is a terrible Injustice but one we can't Escape. Al Jarreau is a legend, but and old age he can't quite do it as you once did.

Hopefully, he can return to touring with minimal dates and doesn't have to retire completely. Because if he did, it is likely he would not last long after that. When people get old and have nothing to live for, sadly they often don't.

Get well, Al

It's possible. But others have been able to pull off retirement from the industry without a hitch (Bill Withers). Curtis Mayfield and Teddy Pendergrass kept making new albums after they were paralyzed - though they didn't tour. So, I'm hoping for the best for Al.

A lot of record reviewers have said exactly that...That he sounds like an Al clone. They also were saying they preferred Al (agreed).

The first time I heard Kem (Love Calls), I could hear he was ripping Al.

For this reason I never thought that Kem would last. Pretty sure it's because music is so crooner depraved today that we'll take anything.
All Kem says is "Gurl" and "Baby" twenty times per song.
