It’s been nearly three years since the controversial death of Eric Garner and now his widow Esaw Snipes Garner has won a settlement of $2.4 million for his death. It has been reported that she’s received approximately $500,000 from the settlement, so far. But like most people, she doesn’t desire for the money to led to drastic changes in her life. In fact, not very much will change at all; not even her address. Home Sweet Home: Despite the staggering windfall, Esaw Garner has revealed she has no plans to move out of public housing. Since the $2.4 million will not count against her income, she would actually be able to continue living in her apartment in Fulton Houses where she’s lived for years, reports the New York Post. A representative with the New York City Housing Authority even confirmed Garner would not even have an increased rental rate. Backlash and Opinions: Although the decision is solely up to Garner, many social media users aren’t too happy about it. As expected, her decision has been met with opposition and an array of mixed opinions. While some people understand her perspective, others just don’t understand why she would choose to stay in poverty with $2 million in the bank. Do you agree with Esaw Garner’s decision to live in public housing despite her wealth? Share your thoughts.

the argument
She's been through enough. No amount of money will change the loss of her partner at the hands of the NYPD.

She can do as she pleases.

living rent free in the projects with 2.+ mil in the bank though??

That would be the most pragmatic. Surprised the settlement is so low for a story that reached national attention. 2.4 million isn't at all a lot of money given the gravity of the situation.

state limit on lawsuit awards

not every projects is bad..in fact a lot are getting upgraded to the point they trying to kick people out to move in cacs.. quiet as kept some projects apts are big as shit and got a lot of bedrooms.. a person with a eye for interior decorating can hook them shits up nicely.. hell there's a lot of not so legal hustlers who have fixed the fuck out their cribs and literally live rent free or pay low for rent..actually another quiet govt hustle get cheap rent while not doin so legal activities.. some people been in their spots forever and cool with the people so they basically don't get fuck with

i'm not saying go buy a bentley and a mansion.

65k-90k home somewhere and a ford focus and call it day.

Where in the US, let alone Staten Island NY is she gonna find that? There aren't places in the south that are going that cheap. Detroit perhaps? Some run down abandoned dwelling going for the price of a VCR.

She's clearly not interested in uprooting and that's her choice.

Plenty of places in the south, in NYS, Pennsylvania, etc...that have nice homes going that cheap.

Her choice, but she might have made herself a target to stay in the damn pjs. Instead of taking the money and getting the fuck out, she stays? Smh...

Really.. Thats news to me. I'm in DC and have friends up and down the Carolinas, Georgia, etc..
Haven't seen anything feasible and decent for those prices at all. Will have to look into that thanks.

1. never said anything about even staying in that area.
2. yes there are houses that are actually decent going for that all over the place, i'm not saying she has to go to the most expensive city there is. anything is a step up.

3. the whole point of the matter is you're living in a rent free project provided for those with no means but you're sitting on millions talking about i'm not moving.

Thanks for the links. I'm not judging this woman on what she wants to do with her money. If she feels comfortable in her neighborhood, around her friends and fam after the death of her partner, I don't see a real purpose in her leaving. She can stretch that small amount of money by staying put cause it won't last forever.

maybe she'll move eventually. staying there might get stressful between her and her surroundings. come here down south......100-150k for a house she golden.

Man, there are tons of homes out there in other (safer) areas that are cheap. It's the mentality of not wanting to relocate that fucks it up for some though.

Could never understand wanting to stay in NYC and pay a high prices for a little shoe box, where that same money elsewhere could get yout a mini mansion

And for her to choose to stay in a shoebox for free is sad as fuck, especially if she was given an opportunity to GTFO and start a new life elsewhere.

WTF is she going to leave her kids after that money is spent?

Eric Garner was out there trying to earn money for his family, no? Guess he died for nothing, literally, if she is unwilling to leave the fucking projects. I don't give a fuck how "nice" the project is, it's still the fucking projects

Maybe she has plans on taking care of the kids and grandkids future. $800K to the lawyers, $500K first installment, so that leaves $1.1MM left over.
No.... WE are because he now can afford to move but has decided to stay and live for free off of our tax dollars.... Fuck her. People like her are a problem. I know some Seniors and some others who need assistance and can't get it and she wants to squat!?!?! Fuck her...

You do realize she's receiving the money because of a LOSS to her and her family. Kinda wild getting mad at her for staying where she's at just because he received money for the loss of a family member.

Not going to be judgmental with respect the her decision to remain where she is, but I do have a problem with her being allowed to stay paying the same rent. Public housing, I thought, is intended for people with limited resources, a condition she, thank goodness, no longer finds herself in. :hmm:

What about her friends and family? She can't move them to northeast Ohio or the south. She has 6 kids and two grandkids. Community has a lot to do with why people grow comfortable with where they are. Now if she could find something close by, that would be ideal, but the knee jerk assumption folks are making off a headline is 2.4 mil=exit. Contrary to popular belief, it's not as black and white as that.

I agree with the notion that she should pay a bit more. Absolutely. I have no issue with them raising the rent on her slightly.
