Chicago records 762 homicides in 2016, up 57 percent from previous year

The city of Chicago recorded 762 homicides in 2016 — an average of two murders per day, the most killings in the city for two decades and more than New York and Los Angeles combined.

The nation's third largest city also saw 1,100 more shooting incidents than it did in 2015, according to statistics released by the Chicago Police Department that underlined a story of bloodshed that has put Chicago at the center of a national dialogue about gun violence.

The numbers released Sunday are staggering, even for those following the steady news accounts of weekends ending with dozens of shootings and monthly death tolls that hadn't been seen in years. The increase in 2016 homicides compared to 2015, when 485 were reported, is the largest spike in 60 years.

Police and city officials have lamented the flood of illegal guns into the city, and the crime statistics appeared to support their claims: Police recovered 8,300 illegal guns in 2015, a 20 percent from the previous year.

There have been 69 murders in 2016, through Dec. 26, a sharp increase over the previous year and the most since 2008 when there were 70 killings.

  • In 2015:
  • 56 murders
  • 26 killed by guns
  • 282 shooting occurrences
  • 425 shooting victims
  • 137 injured by guns
  • 18 stabbed to death
  • 12 killed by other means
In 2016 (as of Dec. 26):

  • 69 murders (up 23% over 2015)
  • 40 killed by guns (up 54%)
  • 402 shooting occurrences (up 43%)
  • 573 shooting victims (up 35%)
  • 151 injured by guns (up 10%)

On another note, does anybody know the real reason why so many bodies are popping up? I'm in the D and it's bad here but we have no infastructure for anything that isn't related to automobile manufacturing. We can't even get mass transit built because the CACs don't want blacks to come to the burbs. Chicago doesn't have these challenges so I'm just curious to what's really going on. Is the gang culture THAT much worse than LA?

Toronto doesnt have poverty or drugs nowhere near what large U.S. cities have. Plus most poor people there are immigrants.

That's sad about the Detroit situation.

The crazy thing about this if you compare the major cities including Chicago during the height of the crack epidemic late 80's early 90's ,murders were.up to 1000-2000 plus unfortunately.

Couple of interviews mentioned that after some of the Chicago housing projects were destroyed in that particular area familes.were scattered so therefore gangs were displaced in enemy areas.Also revenge killings and the many large gangs have local neighborhood crews who are not with the old ways and structure.They are renegades.they generally dont care about the old heads and having hierarchy......yes social media beefs too...

Of course you have the standard poverty,lack of jobs.etc....
 
Cats don't want to hear it, but perception fucking matters. We are in a tough position right now. Police killing us is a fucking problem. It's always been one. But these crime numbers are crazy and will just be used against us.

260 black people killed by police in the entire country, but how many killed in Chicago alone? It's just a fact that will be thrown back at us. This shit is political, and we have to play fucking politics for once. But how do we do it? I hate to say it, but the current way isn't working(could argue that it played a part in Trump's rise). The numbers are just too fucked up.

We have to come with some serious strategy to overcome a problem that was created by serious strategy. Remember, all the black lives that are being lost due to black on black crime leave people who wonder why their loved ones aren't cared about. Whether right or wrong, that's just people. With each passing year, the numbers rise. 260 or thereabouts vs a much, much greater number.

We have to play correct politics to address all the problem. Why? Because as number rise, folks will wonder why their loved ones ain't getting coverage. It's just life. That's how humans work. And cacs waiting in the wings to point to all the black bodies dropping by non-pigs.

We definitely have to demand more from politicians to solve all these problems.
 
Americans lost 3000 lives and they spent over $4 trillion dollars. Here they have lost 1000 and have spent almost 500 million.

It appears Americans not to have their priorities in order.

If I were to guess it would be a combination of:

1) The tearing down of the projects.
Chicago was always known for being a gang city and for having huge densely populated projects. Tearing down these projects broke up gangs and placed opposing gang members closer to each other with few barriers. It also decreased organization. Its widely known in law enforcement that when a Kingpin falls, murder goes up because of people jockeying for position and less organization/discipline. When the projects fell, huge gangs turned to multiple small crews that did their own thing and decreased organization. Supposedly there are crews from the same sets that are warring with each other.

2.) Economic segregation.
A large part of the crime are in small areas of the city.These are the most poverty stricken areas.Most large cities have poverty distributed around the city,but Chicago seems to have severly poverty stricken areas in which the people of those areas don't leave. San Francisco used to have the same thing during their worst years. The mentality of SF cats were alot different than many other cities in which people saw more.


Personally I think the answers are:
1.) Operation Cease Fire
2.) Gang Injunctions
3.) Distributing housing more through Section 8 and Low Income Housing construction.
4.) Job training
5.) Stronger gun laws like NYC.

I thought Chicago had the strictest gun laws in the country?

A friend of mine is a line supervisor at the Ford Assembly Plant in Chicago and she said it's a gang culture inside the plant. Cats in there making great money plus benefits and still waring over sets. :smh:

By "tougher gun laws" I don't mean as in tough to legally get,but stricter penalties if caught with one illegally. This is how NYC is. I recently heard an interview with Birdman who said he doesn't even like to go to LA or NYC because the penalties are so stiff. I know this would put more bruthas behind bars,but some of these mfers need to be off the street before Chicago can really see progress.
 
And my wife wants to move BACK to Chicago..... For as long as I've lived in Chicago, I've been trying to get out

Stop being simple. Many of us have been paying attention to local politics and also are done throwing away our votes to people who don't give a shit. You way too upset because that incompetent bitch lost the election. Let that shit go. Move on. Life isn't over.

Even when cities are run by black people, the same fucking corruption exists. Residents are getting fucked. They aren't getting anything for their votes. Time for black people to change that.

If I remembered where the link was/who posted it, I would gladly post the link.

I see these numbers but Ive been told by several people how beautiful the City of Chicago is and how the shopping is better than New York.

Agreed.

One of Rauner's first actions was to cut funding to boys and girls club in Illinois.

I volunteer at one in my city. 300+ kids at peak times are there and they only pay $30-$50 a year if anything to come. Mostly non white kids.

If these kids didn't have the boys & girls club to go to for 8-10 hours a day I know they would be out in the streets. We already see each year at least 1-2 kids that passed through dead from violence.

If you donate to charities think about the boys and girls club. The Y has more corporate donations then the boys and girls club. Boys and Girls club do so much more for non white kids but struggle getting donations.

Being killed by the hands of someone else is an entirely different matter. Especially when the victimized person may not know or even see their killer.
