Jae Crowder: Celtics fans cheering Gordon Hayward 'sign of disrespect'

11:46 PM

BOSTON -- Recognizing that Utah Jazzforward Gordon Hayward will be a potential free agent this offseason -- and given his Butler University connections to Boston coach Brad Stevens -- Celtics fans greeted Hayward with some audible cheers during lineup introductions before Tuesday's game at TD Garden.

That didn't sit well with Celtics forwardJae Crowder, who just so happens to play the same position as Hayward.

Crowder responded with maybe his best game of the season, scoring 21 points on 6 of 8 shooting, while making all but one of the six 3-pointers that he put up over 35 minutes of floor time as part of Boston's 115-104 victory.

After the game, Crowder sounded off, both in the locker room and on social media, about his perceived slight from the fans.

"I heard the cheering before the game. I didn't like that at all," said Crowder. "I think that was a sign of disrespect to me from the fans. That sparked a little fire in me."

"I just felt disrespected," Crowder added.

He then took to social media to again voice his displeasure.

Crowder has always been protective of his position, particularly when Hayward has been suggested as a potential free-agent target for Boston. Over the summer, Comcast SportsNet New England tweeted a link to a story about five 2017 free agents the Celtics might target, and Crowder responded with seven sleeping emojis.

He later told ESPN of the emoji response: "[Those type of stories keep] interrupting my people. And I keep seeing trade rumors, and I still see stuff like that. It's like, man, it's never going to stop. It's never going to stop. I don't get mad about it. I just make fun of it, like I did. Sleeping emoji -- that's funny. That's what I did."

Crowder seemed a lot more ruffled after Tuesday's game and, after voicing his displeasure on Twitter, he retweeted a suggestion from a follower that he could return to the Dallas Mavericks, who traded him to Boston in December 2013. When another follower suggested that Crowder could "love it or leave it" in Boston, Crowder responded in his typical all-caps by writing, "I HAVE NO PROBLEM LEAVING IT!"

Celtics fans have often given warm greetings to both former players and potential free agents-to-be. Last season, Kevin Durant drew loud cheers during Oklahoma City's lone visit to TD Garden, and he later gushed about the atmosphere in Boston before taking a meeting with the team in July.

Crowder has quietly put together a quality season, despite dealing with the effects of an ankle injury that sidelined him early on. Crowder owns the best on-court net rating on the team at plus-8.6 points per 100 possessions. The Celtics own a net rating of minus-3.6 points per 100 possessions when Crowder is off the court. (The team's defensive rating spikes nearly four points without him.)

Isaiah Thomas, who had another monster night with 29 points and a career-high 15 assists, offered high praise for Crowder's play on Tuesday.

"When he's playing that well on offense, it's tough to beat us," said Thomas. "We know he's going to bring it on the defensive end. And when he's making shots and attacking the hole, getting fouls, that just gives us another weapon."

Jrue Holiday voices appreciation for support from LeBron James, others

Jan 2, 2017

CLEVELAND -- In the brief moments after the Cavaliers and Pelicans took the floor Monday night and before their game tipped off, LeBron Jamesapproached Jrue Holiday to offer him words of encouragement and tap him on the chest, acknowledging the point guard's off-court struggles.

Holiday's wife, former U.S. women's national soccer team player Lauren Holiday, underwent brain surgery in October to have a benign tumor removed. Just weeks prior to the procedure, she gave birth to the couple's first child, Jrue Tyler Holiday, a daughter. Jrue Holiday took a leave of absence from the Pelicans to be with his family at the time.

Following the Cavs' 90-82 win over the Pelicans, Holiday told ESPN that he didn't have much of a prior relationship with James -- "just in passing" -- and that he was touched by the gesture.

"When we heard about it, me and my family and my wife heard about it, we were in L.A. at the time in the offseason and we automatically had a prayer for her," James told ESPN of Holiday's situation. "This is a brotherhood, no matter if you're on the same team or not, this is a fraternity. Our league is a fraternity. Any time someone's family is going through a situation like that, you just hope the greater God above is looking out for him. So, I couldn't wait to actually see him today."

Holiday went on to have 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and a game-high 13 assists, nearly matching the Cavs' team total of 16 assists on his own.

"Obviously to him, family means more than anything," Holiday told ESPN. "And the same thing for me. So, the fact that they've been praying and supporting my wife is a blessing to me.

"To know that this league and somebody of his caliber and the effect that he has on the game like he does can really have support for my family is awesome."

Holiday missed the Pelicans' first 12 games of the season to be with his family, and the team went 2-10 in his absence. Since his return, New Orleans has gone 12-12, including Monday's loss, to climb back into the Western Conference playoff picture.

He said greetings like he got from James have become commonplace.

"I've gotten it probably every game -- whether it's from referees or from players, I've gotten it every game," Holiday said. "I guess for our league to acknowledge that and for it to feel like a brotherhood, that's really what it feels like."

James said it was important to put the competition aside momentarily to show Holiday he cared.

"Once the ball is tipped, you're going to go out and compete and try to help our teams win, but listen, at the end of the day, family comes before anything," James said. "And to know what he was going through with his wife and having to have a leave of absence because of that, that's bigger than anything. So, it was a no-brainer."

Now back with the Pelicans for nearly six weeks, Holiday said it's not just New Orleans' on-court product that is improving.

"I guess it's been going well and it hasn't been affecting me, I don't think," said Holiday, who went into Monday averaging 14.6 points, 7.0 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game. "My wife is doing really well and she's gradually getting better, and that's all I can ask for. She's alive, and I'm blessed for that. My daughter is OK. So, I'm happy.

"I'm doing well. My wife is a lot better so I'm doing a lot better."

What do you think about these situations....

Remember I fucks with Bron Bron so his squad normally comes first...

A few trades....

Cavs & Hawks
Love for Millsap(kinda the same player)

Spurs & Hawks
Aldridge for Millsap

Sixers & Hawks
Noel, ????? For Millsap

I think this could be the nasty

Bucks & Hawks
???? For Millsap
There is no way in hell I'd even think about Love for Millsap, for one right now Love shooting from the three .397 is a lot closer to Curry .401 than he is to Love shooting at .318 from the three.
Not to mentioned averaging 2 more rebounds and 4 extra points more per game, and this is being often the third option on the team.

Should -- and will -- the Chicago Bullstrade star guard Jimmy Butler? What about Rajon Rondo?

Our NBA Insiders debate what moves Chicago should make before the deadline.

Notice the tremendous drop off of play when ever LeBron is out of the game, I never seen one player with such a big impact on his team.

Once again Westbrook and the Thunder goes up against a decant not great team and lose.. Adding to my theory that both the Thunder and Westbrook are a smoke and mirrors team who feast off of bad teams to pad their stats.

What would be very interesting is if all the resting that hes giving these dudes; and 1 or more goes down with a significant injury....

Well it almost happen Lebron came down on Carter-Williams foot after a rebound attempt.

Well there is a drop off, but they Cavs did cut the lead all the way down with Lebron on the bench.

Jordan & Kay really ain't no catch and shoot guys, they probably can develop into that but they need the ball(volume scoring(well it seems like to me) is what they thrived at tonight) to be affective.

I think this the reason they were being shopped early in the season.

When LeBron hit the bench the first time the air went out the tire.. Keep in mind he wasn't at full strength and was forced to play both 4 and 5, so him not being able to carry that energy through out the game is understandable with that lineup.

Man you if anybody knows I fucks with dude, so I understand that. My problem with him(which is works and worked) is he is giving so much command over running the offense, he is offense when paired up with subs, that they look lost to often when he's not there.

Lebron luv catch and shoot players(normally limited for as penetrating with ball/dribble drive) and they've came up huge for him but how about
* run back door alleys for JR and Shumpert.
* let Kay and Jordan run the offensive with the starters
* work deep Fyre on the block & midrange(which Lue have done greatly this year)

I feel if these situations are done at high rates yearly, these players wouldn't look lost when name is called. Jordan don't look completely lost because he's a baller/natural scorer.

Well I think there was a concern effort to give the younger players more touches allowing them to run the show. Usually LeBron is more hands on and like you said likes to set up the catch and shoot players.
Even though they lost the game I think that the experience the younger guys got will go a long way towards the benefit of the team.

I don't know about concerned effort because if Uncle was available I doubt Kay would've played.
I do feel there's should be minutes where Kay and Jordan gets time, even if it's just to get a few attacks at the basket when teams are in the bonus late in quarters.

This extra time should continue, just keep that hold on top KD the east but get the bench confident with the slot and roll within the flow.

I doubt if they stick with the extra mins for the youth once they get healthy but I think they are pleased with their development during their extended playing time.

CJ McCollum is going the fuck off
To me Lillard is Westbrook 2.0 another stat hoe who quest for numbers doesn't really help the team.
CJ is just doing exactly what Lillard does, fire away and not worry about anything else, but so far he is actually doing it better than Lillard.

NBA All-Star Uniforms.

Doesn't feature the obvious New Orleans references that previous New Orleans All-Star games had..

Per ESPN sats:

Russell Westbrook now has 4 games this season in which he's missed 20 or more shots. That's twice as many as the rest of the NBA combined.
