Donell Jones Don't Get The Props He Deserves

Chicago legend..He wrote so many hits that he didn't even have to be an artist.

He was nowhere near underated though..He got his shine and he still collecting heavy royalty checks every quarter.

Word bruh, I guess I just mean that the brother doesn't get his shine as an artist the way he should. His name should ring out more loudly in the mainstream r&b imagination

man i been saying this for years. Dude voice is made for R&B..Fast, slow, dont matter. I never heard a track from him that sounded wack. not sure when he last dropped a CD but the last one i heard i remember having a track for the strippers with Yung Joc and even that shit was vibing. Another dude had a good voice for R&B was Avant. But he never matched his music with the type voice he had IMO. Could have done a lot better with his career.

DJ is definitely one of the most underrated R&B artists that ever did it..

On a side note: Donell Jones + 40 Shebib style production = Bryson Tiller

I just watched the video with Left Eye in it a few days ago. Jesus she was bad

one of my favorite r and b artist. classic smooth r and b. guilty by suspicion and you know that i love you my jams. i still play his first two albums all the way through.

where i wanna be album is the best modern R&B album ever

It's most definitely up there... the replay value is amazing. "Life Goes On" is up there for me personally as well... I put them in the Dave Hollister "Ghetto Hymns" and Chico Debarge "Long Time No See" 90s early 00s lane of impeccable panty dropping music. 'Cause at the end of the day the best review is in the form of the arch in a broad's back

Damn I just realized I pretty much charged that whole era of R&B/ Soul. Outside of some singles, never really got into those newer cats. None of'em. I know about them all pretty much, but that's it.

Thinking back, that's scary.:dunno: I'mma check out DJ's album, since I like diggin. I know he had some talents.

Sidenote: Tony Terry's album was garbage surprisingly.:eek2: All those years of just When I'm With You. Went back and listened to the whole project. He was in New Jack hell IMO. Didn't fit his vocals.:smh:

The same issue that Jesse Powell had...vocals for days, a killer slow jam & an album that was contrived New Jack Swing. By the time either one of them got right, the industry had passed them. Sad...

Interesting. I remember that artist. I'm going to check it out too out of curiosity. That New Jack sound was aggressive and influential. You had to be careful with it. Have the right dosage, producers and scheme or your project could get tarnished. Thanks for the info.

It killed Christopher Williams too. They even had him looking and sounding like Bobby Brown in the "Talk To Myself" video.

I'm surprised Johnny Gill survived it.

Yeah it did kill niggas career! I loved the sound but grew tired off it after everyone basically made the same song and built their whole style off of it!

Seems to happen with every subgenre at some point or another.

East Coast hip-hop, West Coast hip-hop, neo-soul, dance pop, the boy band craze....hell, even the overseas variants like UK Garage, dubstep & grime went through it...

Crazy....

Very true and that is why artist should not build their careers off of subgenre’s unless they are only In it to cash out not longevity.

Since we back on the Donnell vibe...

Somebody let me know WHO wrote Jermaine Dupri's verse on this song. This might be the best I've ever heard him spit!

And the song is fire, of course...
