Gene did not, I repeat, DID NOT EVER do ONE note of ANYBODY'S music. Gene couldn't play triangle if you handed him one.
It was Teddy primarily. And then Bernard, Dinky and Mucho.
I was around 80-90% of all of those sessions and trust me, the only thing Gene ever did was make sure nobody fucked with the bread. (Cause he was stealing all of it anyway) .
*We used to crack up when photographers wanted a picture of Teddy and Gene in the studio. He would always grab a knob on the mixing board and cheese, like he knew what he was doing. LOL*
So who produced those Basic Black records?
![]()
I would say Mucho ( 2nd from right ) produced those records, along with Darryl ( Aaron's cousin. Far right ).
You have to understand that Basic Black was nothing more than the product of everybody else leaving Gene.
The road band musicians and wannabes were more than happy to stay with him, even though they KNEW he was stealing publishing, advances and tour money.
Grimey shit was that they was wearing Guy's clothes from the road in their 1st video. LOL. That's some nasty shit. You wanna replace a group so bad that you wear the next man's pants and shirts that you seen them sweat in for mad shows? Disgusting.
In the end, Gene robbed them too. Months later, Darryl was driving around ATL poppin shit about him and threatening to shoot him on sight.
Gene heard about it, found him and pistol whipped his teeth out his face.
True story.
Damn. Marlon wasn't even subtle about ripping off his brother.![]()
Damn! I never the lead singer was Aaron's cousin. I thought he was just biting Aaron's vocal style. You sound like you know a lil something!! Post some Gene Griffin stories for the board! Dude sounds grimier than Suge!!
Gene was one of the industry's 1st Suge Knights.
Truth be told, Gene was good peoples. He did gangster shit, but it always seemed to be business. (Unlike Suge doing wild shit at any time for almost nothing).
He used to be with Teddy's mother and practically raised him. He was getting money in the street for years and used to look out for certain people in St Nick here and there.
He got caught with some weight and ended up doing some time for tax evasion. (That was right b4 Guy jumped off).
When he got out though, Andre Harrell had not only signed Guy directly to his production company/Uptown Records, he was also using Guy studio budget money on other acts. Big no-no. (You gotta recoup what somebody ELSE spent? FOH)
When Gene confronted Andre about it, Andre made the mistake of poppin that good shit. Talking to him like he was just another industry dude. *At that time, most of the Black music industry gangsters were either locked up (Bill Underwood) or just behind the scenes, getting old. The point is...he didn't know he was fucking with a real one.
Gene beat the shit outta him in the office and made him sign all Guy's rights back to his own production company. (The same thing would be repeated almost 10 years later in Andre's office --- this time --- by Suge Knight for Devante. LOL)
But that's why, if you bought those records then, 'Groove Me' was on Uptown Records for the first batch. By the time 'Round and Round' and 'I Like' came out, all Guy's releases were directly on MCA Records.
<----------------- LOL @ grabbing the buttons. RIP Gene Griffin.![]()
Good info man. So Andre Harrell got his ass beat twice!! I never about the Suge beatdown (and alleged piss-drinking), but not Gene Griffin's. Makes sense now. I always wondered why Teddy Riley didn't really produce for Uptown artists. Seemed like most was done by Al B Sure, Kyle West, Mark Morales, Dave Hall, Rich Harrison, and DeVante.
Are you in that Facebook New Jack Swing group? There was a lot of talk in there about Teddy Riley's tribute on the Soul Train awards. People were wondering why no Blackstreet songs were performed, and Chauncey came in and said he didn't sign off on it.
Who?Just know this: He was really feeling himself to the point that he forgot who he was talking to at times. That got him knocked down to the studio ground with a one-hitter delivered by...
