Cavs' 20 3-pointers in consecutive games sets NBA record

CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers set an NBA record by becoming the first team to have back-to-back regular-season games with 20 3-pointers, according to Elias Sports Bureau research.

The team made 21 on Wednesday in racking up 137 points in a win against the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Cavs piled on 20 more Friday in a 128-90 rout of the Dallas Mavericks. There had been only 25 games in league history in which a team made 20 or more 3s in a game before this week, according to BasketballReference.com.

The Golden State Warriors accomplished the feat seven times last season but never in back-to-back games. The Cavs had consecutive 20 3-pointer games against theAtlanta Hawks last season in the playoffs, making a combined 46 in Games 2 and 3 of their 4-0 series sweep.

The Cavs have now recorded 10 or more 3-pointers in 14 consecutive games. They have made at least seven 3-pointers in 54 straight games dating to last season, an NBA record.

"We were making 11, 12 or 13 3s (per game), but I thought that we could shoot better," Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. "The last couple games the guys have been shooting really well."

After Kevin Love hit 8 of 12 3-pointers Wednesday in a 40-point showing, he hit 7 of 9 against the Mavs and scored 27 points.

Love had been reducing his 3-point volume earlier in the season and looking to get to the foul line. But after reviewing film with assistant coach Phil Handy, Love said he was passing up good shot opportunities because he was aiming to draw fouls instead. So Love abandoned pump fakes and looked to shoot quicker after catching passes.

"So many guys close out to me so hard, but having my size, I'm able to get the ball off quick if I just catch and shoot," Love said. "I think I saw that and I've been able to do that. That's only going to open up more for everybody. Feels good right now."

Love is 15-of-21 on 3-pointers the past two games, and Kyrie Irving, who had 25 points Friday, is 7-of-11. The Cavs went 20-of-43 on 3-pointers in the victory against the Mavs, and that included a woeful performance byJ.R. Smith, who went 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.

The team is averaging 14 3-pointers per game this season and shooting 40 percent as a team, tied with the San Antonio Spurs for best in the league. The Cavs average 35 3-point attempts per game, second to theHouston Rockets, who average 36.

LeBron James had 11 assists Friday after picking up 13 Wednesday. Of the 24 assists, 16 of them set up 3-pointers. He also had five assists that led to layups or dunks Friday.

"That's what we're capable of, and we've been doing it on both ends the last couple games," James said. "Obviously people [are] going to look at the shooting, the way we're shooting the 3-ball right now, but defensively we stepped it up more now. That's the good thing for me, what I like to see."

Cavs shake off slow start to down Sixers

Kyrie Irving had 19 of his season-high 39 points and LeBron James added a triple-double to fuel Cleveland's comeback win over Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA – “He could score 60 -- in the 55s and 60s, all the time.”

That was Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue talking about Cavs guardKyrie Irving after Irving dropped a season-high 39 points in a 112-108 win over the Philadelphia 76ers Sunday.

Yet what we’ve seen through the Cavs’ 13-2 start to their title-defending season is that the full-fledged scoring version of Irving is rarely needed for Cleveland to keep winning. Which means the remarkable thing about Lue’s statement is not that the 24-year-old Irving is capable of putting up numbers like that – his 55- and 57-point performances two seasons ago showed that – but that he is capable of resisting the urge to always play that way in the name of the Cavs’ success.

“It’s just about picking and choosing,” Irving said after scoring 10 of the Cavs’ first 13 points in the fourth quarter to help them come back from an early 14-point hole against Philly. “Knowing where your spots are. When you have great players like this on our team, it can come from any of us [at] any given moment. So, when any of us gets it going, we always continue to go to that person. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Whether it’s needed for me to go get however many in the fourth quarter -- or Kevin [Love] or Bron [James] or Channing [Frye]. It can be anybody’s night. It’s just that we’re always trusting the pass, and we’re always trusting each other and making each other better. So that fourth quarter was just the night for me to be aggressive.”

“Taking plays in mentally, picturing it,” Irving described. “Plays that we would have in the first half where I’d come off pick-and-rolls, and I saw how Joel Embiid was playing the pick-and-rolls as well as Jahlil [Okafor]. So, just taking mental screenshots and then using that for the fourth quarter to execute down the stretch.”

When James was asked what he liked about Irving’s fourth-quarter performance, he responded with a question of his own: “How could you not like everything he did in the fourth?”

Irving, the guy who hit "The Shot" overStephen Curry in Game 7 last June, has emerged as Cleveland’s closer. How can you not like everything about that?

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban dismisses any suggestions of team tanking this season
  • Tim MacMahon
    ESPN Staff Writer

DALLAS -- Owner Mark Cuban defiantly disagrees with those who have declared the Dallas Mavericks' season a lost cause and have suggested that tanking is in the franchise's best interest.

"Haters gonna hate. We think that you always compete," Cuban said after finishing his pregame StairMaster routine Sunday night. "If you're competing when the league is better, like it is this year, if you don't do well, you'll be in a position to get a good pick. Which, remember, even if you have the worst record in the NBA, there's a 75 percent chance you're not going to get the top pick."

The injury-ravaged Mavericks snapped an eight-game losing streak with Sunday's 91-81 win win over the New Orleans Pelicans but still have the league's worst record (3-13). It was the team's longest losing streak during Cuban's ownership tenure, which dates to January 2000.

Dirk Nowitzki, who continues to struggle with soreness in his right Achilles tendon and missed his 11th game of the season Sunday, can't get fully healthy and return to form.

If the Mavs don't improve significantly, Cuban didn't rule out making future-minded trades before the deadline in February. But he's nowhere close to making that kind of determination in late November.

"We'll play it by ear," Cuban said. "The one thing you don't do is panic. The one thing you don't do is make any rushed judgments. You see what you have -- right? -- and that's exactly what we'll do, and we'll make determinations from there. If we just can't get healthy, that will tell us one thing. If we can and we're just not any good, that will tell us another thing. If we can and we start rolling along and we think we can get a lot better, then that tells what we do there. You just don't know. The crazy thing you don't do is panic."

Cuban laughed when he said that the Mavs would tank if they knew there were a few "transcendent players" in the draft. Yet he indicated that he was not as high on this draft class, which has been hyped as one of the best in years.

"This is not a race-to-the-bottom year," Cuban said. "So we get every chance to be as good as we can be. The team that has the worst record has a 75 percent chance that they won't get the No. 1 pick. That's not good odds. You'll get a top-three pick ... but there's no good reason to tank unless you think that there's three difference-makers. Not just All-Stars, but difference-makers.

"We'll see what happens across the course of the season to see if anybody emerges like that, but I'm not panicking, not rushing to judgment, not pulling the plug -- pick a euphemism."

Atl wants some more respek go get it...

Looked good tonight tho Bruh! Shit, Westbrook does that shit to every damn body... Didn't know Wilson Chandler still had a little game in him either...

Wilson been putting together a nice little string of games. When healthy he's a solid two way player but he ain't never healthy. Best i've felt about this team since Karl got fired. Murray will be that guy...........and then Denver will trade him to a team where he gets a ring. Sike, that better not happen.........again.

They might not trade him, but he'll leave

Anthony Davis, bolstered by 31.6 average, goes on D over teammates

As Anthony Davis' scoring average has soared, now to the highest mark in the NBA, so too has criticism over the lack of support he is getting from his New Orleans Pelicansteammates to make a similar rise in the Western Conference standings.

Davis, speaking to ESPN's Marc Stein on the "TrueHoop: Conversations" podcast, acknowledged that he hears talk about his current predicament but doesn't necessarily agree.

"I hear it. I see it. I'm on social media, so I see it all the time," Davis told Stein. "But I think, for me, it's just about the guys in that locker room. I know they come out here every day in practice and every night in the game and fight and leave everything on the floor. It's nothing that I try to pay attention to as much. But you see it. You have to pay attention to it.

"For me, that's not my M.O. to get into all the media and all that stuff. I just worry about what's going on in that locker room and on the floor with the guys I have in the locker room."

Davis has reached new heights in his fifth season in New Orleans. As of Monday, he leads the NBA in points (31.6) and blocks (2.8) while averaging career highs in rebounds (11.0), steals (1.8) and minutes (37.2). The 23-year-old said his ability to block out the public conversation, much like his game, has grown over the years.

"Of course, my rookie year, it's really the first time people are really, really talking about you," Anthony said. "Of course we had it at Kentucky and a little bit at high school, but when you get to the NBA and of course you're the No. 1 pick, all this media's going to be around you.

"And so when they start [saying], 'Oh, injury prone,' 'He's not a leader,' 'He can't carry [a team],' all this stuff, you start to see it. But after a while, as you get older and more established in the league and more experienced, you kind of find a way to tune it out. I think that's the point I'm at right now."

The Pelicans, who rank 12th in the West at 6-12, started the season 0-8. They won their first four games after the return of Jrue Holiday but recently lost both ends of a two-game road streak, including a 91-81 defeat to the last-place Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

Although the Pelicans have fought their way back, Davis admitted the early struggles seemed ominous.

"We were very worried," Davis told Stein. "We didn't envision ourselves being in that situation. But we dug ourselves a hole. We're slowly climbing out of it, and we just have to keep fighting. Nobody wants to start 0-8. Nobody wants to start off on the wrong foot. But it happens.

"Some teams have whoever on their team where they're able to do whatever they want on the floor. For us, we have to be blue-collar guys who are coming in, work, being scrappy, first to the floor, rebounding the ball, sharing the ball. That's how we have to be. That's how we've been the past couple weeks, and that's how we've been able to get wins."

Although Davis' individual production has never been better, the three-time All-Star cited ball-handling and passing as the next evolution of his game.

"I watch LeBron [James], Steph [Curry], all those guys make their teammates better," he said. "They find them. Even Draymond [Green]. He plays the same position and does the same thing, and he's able to find his teammates in a way that I can't right now. That's definitely what I want to get better at."

Wondering if people REALLY understand that we have the makings of a historic season by this Dude...

To be real I kinda wish Bron Bron would up the ante a bit...average 25,10,10 that shit crazy...

So many should

Westbrook going ham
Lebron doing him
Harden found a coach
KD doing him
Curry doing him
DeMar killing the mid range game
Kyrie displaying Uncle Drew nightly
Dubs killing fools
Cavs setting difference 3's records

Dubs, Cavs, spurs and Clippers probably all win 65 games!!!

I laugh at folks who wonders why the TV deal bought more $$$$$

Good Shit!!!

Love is doing work; It will be interesting this week to see how he does against the Clips
I think so much has to do with confidence. What seemed like a great fit to SOME, lead to some awkward shit. I think if they lose that series last year, Love is just done with the team. Everyone gets more respect after last year from the coach to Love. And it's not like the guy was shit. He almost led the Timberwolves to the playoffs in the tough ass western conference.

But playing with 'the man' is a different story. You have to fall back. Bite your tongue. Remember the problems with Kyrie? Like 0 assists in a game for a PG. Blatt looking like a school boy trying to tell grown men what's good? Wade, Bosh, and Bron were friends well beforehand. Irving and Love didn't know Bron like that.

All relationships take work, but when a cat like Bron is basically the owner of the team, they take much more work IMHO.

True true; His confidence is up; Im not sure I believe it yet because I feel his play is in large part because of their schedule; But I give him credit; you play who is in front of you; Cant control the schedule but one can control his play; and hes playing, so good for him....

Westbrook triple-double powers Thunder past Knicks
Russell Westbrook (27 points, 18 rebounds, 14 assists) recorded his 8th triple-double of the season to help lead the Thunder to a victory at Madison Square Garden.

A game featuring Noah and a tiny ass PG; Noah barely has 3 boards in 20+ mins, but Westbrook has 18. Knicks just gave 18 mill per year to a NY Guy who left his heart and soul in Chicago...AND I LOVE IT!!!!

Relax in your hometown and get that money Jo!!! D Rose.....please be the next player to rip them off.
