Lil Wayne talked to the New York Times about his new memoir Gone ‘Til November on Wednesday (Oct. 12), and during the conversation he was asked what he thought about the new generation of rappers like 21 Savage, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert and Kodak Black. His answer is fucking hilarious.

“I swear to God I didn’t know you were saying people’s names just now, so that should probably answer that question,” answers Wayne with what you can only imagine to be a blank face. “I just do my own thing.”

Wayne fans should know that he notoriously only listens to his own music, so it’s no surprise he isn’t up on new rappers like that. But the way he worded it—to say he didn’t even realize those were names the reported was listing—makes it all the funnier.

To be clear, at least three of those rappers (21 Savage not included) wear some of Wayne’s influence on their sleeve, so to hear that Wayne isn’t aware of how his DNA still swirls around in the younger generation adds even more humor to his response.

Elsewhere in the interview, Wayne touches on the status of Tha Carter V, saying it’s completely finished and “so much better than everything I’ve ever heard. Not what’s going on right now — everything I’ve ever heard.”

Since when?!

I know them but I get why he and most people don't. These labels aren't developing artists no more. These dudes all sound alike and all look alike. The game is flooded with this bullshit and its overstocked. You can't pick these dudes out a lineup and a lot of these dudes don't have music videos on TV or nothing. The only way you know these guys is if you go out and follow them or see them on music blogs. Rap has changed dramatically. You use to could turn on to Rap City or 106 to figure these guys out. The game has changed so much and for the worse. But these dudes will sell out a show in your city and they are content with that.

I just found out they aired the BET Hip Hop Awards this week, and I went to the website and saw that all these new niggas had performed and I didn't know none of these niggas.

Every clip I watched from that show I was like "WHO?" and "WHY?"

Hip-Hop deader than a muthafucka right now.

In order for me to get some "new" rap music now, I gotta go back and listen to some old shit I've never took the time to listen to before.

I agree with most of this. I know who they are too but only 21 Savage is somewhat tolerable for my dose of ig'nant nigga shit.

Me too bruh. Did a school dance last week and kids were requesting all the songs by these dudes. Had to download them on the fly.
I'm gonna have to educate myself on alot of these trap music mofos. Makes my ears bleed & my brain cell count drop every time I hear it especially the mumble rap trash but a lot of these clubs down here have that audience that loves it.

Sadly I know who they are but it's nothing to brag about.Their at the bottom of rap and hopefully this will be the turn around.

I know all of them and I'm old. All but yachty I know because of BGOL. Thank you quaid for keeping me relevant!

Ive heard the names but Ive outgrown that dumb shit.
I was never into it. Raised during the 90's in Southern Cali so my influences are STRAIGHT HIP HOP. My "Golden Era" in Hip-Hop is from 1987-1999 though. Although some amazing stuff has been created since then.

I cant listen to rap right now....
There are some good Hip Hop artists out right now. You can't expect the music to land "In your lap" (No homo). What I do is collab with open minded and progressive friends and we share music every so often. I have found many excellent albums/musicians this way. Also artists that are not within one specific genre. Music to me is like food; You cant eat the same shit all the time your whole life.....especially junk food (this new mumble auto tune shit).
