Yes, Preschool Teachers Really Do Treat Black And White Children Totally Differently

“Implicit biases do not begin with black men and police, they begin with young black boys and their preschool teachers, if not earlier.”

When Tunette Powell’s 4-year-old son first got suspended from his preschool class in 2014, she assumed that she needed to be doing something different as a parent. She had already worked hard to enrich her children’s lives, but she challenged herself to be better.

The second time her son JJ got suspended, Powell began to think that maybe it was “just the fate” of her child. When Powell was in school, she had been suspended many times from a young age, and she began to think, “Maybe the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Her thinking only turned around after she attended a birthday party for one of her son’s preschool classmates. Powell and her children are black, but most of the other parents at the party were white. When she mentioned to the group that her son had been suspended for behaviors like allegedly throwing a chair, they were shocked. Their kids had committed worse behaviors, but were only punished with a phone call home.

Her younger son, 3-year-old Joah, also faced a number of suspensions at school. Powell began to consider that maybe something more insidious was working against her children.

New research released Tuesday backs up Powell’s suspicions. A two-part study out of the Yale Child Study Center shows that preschool teachers respond to their black and white students differently. Implicit biases ― or unconscious stereotypes ― might be at the root of these differences, researchers found.

The research is the first-of-its-kind at the preschool level, said study author and Yale professor Walter Gilliam. Black children are 3.6 times more likely to receive a suspension in preschool than their white classmates, according to 2013-2014 data from the Department of Education. But, “until now, no research existed to explain why boys or black preschoolers are at greatest risk for expulsion,” Gilliam said on a call with reporters.

The first half of the study used eye-tracking equipment to determine where teachers look when they are expecting student misconduct.

Researchers had 132 educators watch videos featuring a diverse group of students and primed them to expect student misbehavior. Although no misbehavior actually occurred in the videos, teachers tended to focus their eyes on black students. This suggests that educators expected black students to act out more than other students.

In the second half of the study, the educators read vignettes about a child’s misbehavior. All of the educators read the same vignette, but the students’ names were different. Some teachers were told the child had a traditionally black name, like LaToya, while others were told the child had a stereotypically white name, like Emily. After reading the vignette, researchers asked teachers to rate the severity of the child’s misconduct.

White teachers tended to rate the behavior of the “black” children more mildly than black teachers, who tended to rate the misbehavior of black children more harshly. However, when teachers were told that the child faced a difficult home life, black educators tended to view black children with more empathy, while white educators viewed them as more hopeless. On the other hand, when the same scenario occurred for the “white” students, white teachers tended to view the children with more empathy, while black educators viewed them as more hopeless.

There are a few possible explanations for these behaviors, researchers hypothesize. White teachers might have lower expectations for black students, so they might not see a black child’s misbehavior as particularly unusual or severe. On the other hand, white educators might be self-conscious about giving negative reviews to black children, although this would not explain why they seemed to expect misbehavior in the first half of the study. Black educators might be trying to prepare their black students for a harsh world, researchers speculate.

The researchers did not find a relationship between child race or sex and a teacher’s decision to expel or suspend, “contrary to hypotheses,” says the study.

According to Gilliam, a teacher’s implicit biases can have a big impact on a child’s future.

“Implicit bias is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can sure see its effects,” Gilliam said. “Implicit biases do not begin with black men and police, they begin with young black boys and their preschool teachers, if not earlier.”

Implicit bias is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can sure see its effects.

In the study’s conclusion, researchers suggest that preschool teachers get continual training and guidance on this topic. On a call with reporters, early childhood expert and government official Linda Smith said the study’s conclusions are “far too important for us to ignore.”

“The early childhood field has its roots in social justice. We’ve been fighting for a number of years for resources for our most vulnerable children and their families,” said Smith, who is the deputy assistant secretary for early childhood development at the Administration for Children and Families. “The findings presented today present us with a real challenge that all of us know is not new, but one we haven’t really been addressing with the same rigor as some of these other challenges.”

After seeing how implicit biases were playing out in her sons’ lives, Powell began to dedicate her life to fighting them. In total, Powell’s older son, JJ, was suspended three times from preschool, while her younger son, Joah, was suspended eight times.

However, once JJ entered kindergarten, his apparent behavioral problems disappeared. And when her son Joah got different preschool teachers, he seemed to thrive. The children are now 7- and 5-years-old, and are flourishing in school, said Powell, who recently moved to Los Angeles so she could pursue her doctorate in urban schooling.

Still, every time she looks back on her children’s suspensions, it breaks her heart.

“It’s still very fresh. It’s something that I think about more than I would like to, even when I try to block it,” Powell said. “To tell a child he’s a danger at 3 years old, that is unacceptable. If he remembers even the slightest bit of that, what kind of psychological effect might that even have on him?”

Nobody will tell you this but the U.S. board of education was modeled after the German (Prussian) version, which was created in 1810 after Prussia was defeated by France in the Napoleonic wars..

Here is the real deal... Back then Prussia the most literate country in the world lost to France the most illiterate, so after the defeat King Friedrich Wilhelm III, of Prussia, declared an independent audit examining how exactly they lost and after their conclusion was that his troops were too educated to blindly follow orders, sacraficing their lives like the French, Wilhelm decided to commission a new teaching system that would be divided into three parts...

The first part would be what the majority of the children would attend or 85%, and it would basically train children to become laborers and solders, their training largely consist of memorization, conformity and being able to follow basic rules.. There was a big emphasis on patriotism/nationalism, competition and sports.. They would start at Kindergarten ( a German name for children garden) and would require them to take Gymnasium.. At no time will these children be taught to critically think, for the last thing they needed were a working class and solders who questioned everything.. In this class there is no big rank and file system, they give the kids general goals , grades and rewards for completing a good job, this prepares them for the real world were the golden star of the check pluses become medals and raises by the boss.

The next class made up roughly 14% these children were separated usually by testing at an early age where the top and brightest children were placed at the gifted class. Now their education was a lot different whereas-by the emphasis is placed on not only understanding complex protocols but also taking those instructions and putting it into action..
Competition is there but not in fun and games, but instead trying to get higher in the rank and file system that every student is aware of.
They are groomed to be everything from Doctors, Lawyers, Principals, Chiefs and most Supervisors... They are the ones who tell the workers how to build the building from instructions or plans created by the people from the last group...

The final group made up about 1% of the population, usually they were the brightest of the bright or the richest of the rich, but anyways their education primarily consist of encouraging them to critically think.. In their schools rules, morality are not front and center like the other lower schools and their competition is not limited to just their schools but rather they are groomed to becoming the best in the world..
There read books by the masters but are the ones who wind up writing the books and instructions for the world to follow..

Also around that time beer drinking and Oktoberfest was created in effort to dumb down the working class and using the drug as a way of suppressing deep thinking and keeping them sidetracked..
Now not only did the United States copy the German educational system in 1867 but by 1876 they decided to import the companies like Budweiser to set up shop here and by this time American sports were also started getting a foot hold, and the dumbing down process was underway..

But make no mistakes about it, this system does exactly what it sets out to do and is the most successful system of molding minds the world has ever witnessed, and the proof is in the pudding can be seen in the army domination in both the U.S. and Germany as well as a industrial boom shortly after the system was implemented..
But the biggest problem with the system is that the mas population who are raised under the system usually are unable to effectively think for themselves so they are defendant on others for instruction, this usually create hoards of people gathering together and blindly following others with out anyway for them to acculturate check them.. So basically they are prone to following dictators and fascist leaders... However, in the states with consumerism sprinkled in with the dumbing down process, they are able to keep the status quo with us, just as long as we are given our goodies..

Also note, when you go to school you attend "class" meaning this is where your class that you are stuck in, is defined...
But the biggest joke is how the lower class people actually think school is there to help them get out of their current class...
I mean it can, but literally the odds are stacked against them and by doing so the kid must first buy into the system that is designed to oppress..

Agree with so much that was dropped in many of the posts. Spoke about this to many of my kids educators over many years. One thing bothered me in my son's school when they disciplined kids in the lunch room where they had lights the kids had to watch as to when to be able to speak or be silent. Like it was some prison.

They train them to be either disciplined in the work force or prison. Either one makes no difference to those in power. Just don't train the youth to think or they will become leaders and they can't have that.

I went to Phillippa Schuyler in Brooklyn and just wasn't taught the cookie cutter way from back then. Never understood it growing up. Tried to keep my kids in Montessori schools when I could do private school years back.

His voice is annoying. Not feeling that street rapper wannabe delivery. honestly, just looking at him if I was a judge and he was on trial I would give him a longer sentence. Something about him I don't like

Prussia did that and the result was they lost the war to France.. Three generations of dumbing down their people and they were able to go back to France and walk through them like nothing..
This is the true power of dumbing down your people when it comes to a military nation..

Reading that Huff post article brought back memories. My peoples enrolled me in an african centered school. In my experience I was taught "pride" aka self estreem which I was first taught at home by my peoples.

The school used name calling painting other folks with a broad brush to boost my ex classmates view on life. I lived outside the community.

My friends in my neighborhood were being granted field trips to IT companies, bio chem labs, universities in the area etc . The academic lessons they learn had a real world purpose. I was unhappy so I begged to attend school in my neighborhood. It was a learning curve to say the least.

Saw this on fb a while back.... Im going to be honest. Shit like this VEXES me. You willing t ogo through all that detail to make the video but won't do a damn thing to fix the problem. Anyone can figure out that there is an issue. It takes someone and something special to TRY and FIX the problem or come up with a VIABLE solution

:hmm::hmm::hmm:

When was this and what languages were they literate in?

What kind of white speaking points is this fuckery?

It's as if Africa and it's contributions didn't exist

You really fucking up for a while now

:smh:
Of course Africa and its contributions counted, thats why I said at that time, around 1810 and not all time... But I also said that France was the least literate, I guess you have no argument with that.....
The point I am making is that the reason why the original board of education was created was to create a dumb down working class and a bunch so solders.. You really need to get off that trying to pit black vs white in every single subject, because a lot of this bullshit would still exist even if there was no black man on the earth, why you think their CAC asses fled from England it the first place...
Its just that now us Blacks get all the bullshit that they created, ten times worse.
But if you are not aware on how these social institutions created by the white men, religions, the laws, educations, etc are there work and how they are here to enforce the current cast system we live in today..
Unlike many I stopped looking at white supremacy as some evil boogie man that jumps out at ya and hold you down, because now I see it as a machine or something that can be dissected and with great examination reversed engineered destroying its effects..
Fuck all that fairy tale bullshit I keep shit real!!!

I'm saying watch how you internalize white speaking points.

Carry on.

I'm saying watch how you internalize white speaking points.

Carry on.
I don't get too caught up on speaking points of races, usually they are there to cover the truth... With me I know the truth and even if some shit may seem favorable towards white people, trust me the over all truth about them is not good..
But I am not going to lie or be a hypocrite they did do a lot for the world that most people would consider good or great, I am the type to expose that most of that shit is bullshit that led to more death, more pain and more destruction around the planet..

So, in other words they could be literate as shit, but it doesn't mean shit to me if their intentions are evil and corrupt. Keep in mind most evil shit was created by so called literate people, and most of the beautiful things in the world including yourself is made by non literate things, for example a bee is not literate but he can produce honey, fly, raise their young, live life as a bee should live, a bird is not literate but can fly as well as the best pilot that has ever flown a plane, an ant is not literate but look at the structures they naturally build, and your cells in your body is not literate but look at how they are able to come together working as one creating you..
So excuse me for not looking at the term literate as being a thing of praise as the white folks who try to sell it for their speaking points..
But I get your point and am cool with you pointing it out..

me and my wife went off on our daughter's 6th grade cac science teacher.
she came home and told us that she be makin the students kneel when they want to talk to her or ask a question.
We went up to the school and killed that shit asap. Pretty much forced the principal, vice principal and that teacher to have a meeting with us.
Chewed all they asses out from top to bottom.

How long have you guys lived in this country? To make things better, we're going to have to do it in the home, and work closely with the school, like many parents do. And when your kids are grown and out of school, mentor other kids. Any country to that's quick to slash the education budget, and add to the defense budget when they're trying to "balance" the overall budget, clearly does not give a fuck about its citizens' school systems. Sadly, the education budget is usually the FIRST thing they cut.
