VR not ready for the mainstream - Fils-Aime

Nintendo of America president says the company will adopt VR once it's mass market approachable

Last year at E3, the biggest complaint Nintendo president and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime had about virtual reality was that it simply wasn't fun. That may have changed a bit, because as Fils-Aime told Bloomberg West yesterday, his concern about VR now is about how mass market the tech can be.

"In my judgment, I think VR is a bit further out there for mainstream, mass market applications and applications that consumers can invest a lot of time in versus short snacks of entertainment," Fils-Aime said.

He preceded that remark by cautioning that he hasn't seen everything new about VR at this year's E3, but had previous experience with just about everything else previously announced. He also prefaced his remarks with a more general statement about Nintendo's approach to any new tech.

"For us, we want to make sure that technology is mainstream," Fils-Aime said. "We want to make sure the technology represents strong value to the consumer. So as an example, there was a lot of gyroscopic technology out there in the marketplace, but it really took the Wii and the Wii Remote to really make it mainstream. Even going back all the way back to the Nintendo DS, that was the first electronic device that really made extensive use of a touchscreen.

"So the way we look at VR or even AR, which we do have within our Nintendo 3DS system, for us the technology has to be at a point where it can be mainstream, and then it takes content creating companies like us to really make things that the consumer wants to experience, that they want to jump into the particular technology. That's how we move it forward. We've been looking at the VR space since the days of the Virtual Boy. With us, we want to make sure that our next content is going to be mainstream and mass market approachable, and when something like VR is at that point, you can expect Nintendo to be there."

You have to blame the dude before Phil Spencer on that one. To quote Angry Joe, he fucked it up...

Hence him being fired/taking another job almost immediately after gamescon when the Xbox one came out.

I agree about why would you buy the Xbox S.... but the S is just the Stop gap for the Scorpio that's coming out in 2017.

So the PS NEO would be in direct competition with the Scorpio for next holiday season. So next year you will have the rumored new Nintendo and new Xbox systems. The Xbox S isn't going to have VR. It is basically the Xbox Slim, but it will be 4k ready and $299. It also will have slightly better specs then the xbox one. So my take is that the Xbox S are for people that want a Xbox just for gears 4... like how I bought a playstation 4 just for Uncharted. Those are the ones that hold out. Also according to Phil all Xbox One games will be supported on the other System. I don't see how all Scorpio games will be supported on Xbox One though.

My apologies. When I said the Xbox S I meant the Scorpio.

And Nintendo continues to fuck up........ I love Zelda. I swear I do, but there is no reason for me to every buy a nintendo when I know that in a couple of years.... there will be a mod that will allow me to play zelda on my computer.

I don't even understand Nintendo's game plan anymore. The Wii was a horrible system but it was revolutionary and it i was cheap. It was a smart play, but now it like they aren't even trying and soon they will be just like fucking Sega.

It hurts my heart that there will be a time.... Where Nintendo, Sega, and Atari.. will become nothing more then 3rd party software.

I do agree with him about VR. Of all people... Nintendo should know about the failures with VR.

I just can't see myself willing to play a 10 hr to 20 game in VR. How does playing VR for long periods not cause eye strain?

I wasn't really feeling the Recore trailers shown. Dudes at the show are saying that those trailers don't do the game justice. I need hands on with this game.

Every E3 Nintendo makes me not want to buy their stuff. Not saying it has to be a monster but at least equal with what's out and use a traditional controller. They need 3rd party help and they need someone who has played online before to build their network.

Nintendo continues to do their own thing. They really should just do software and mobile. The Wii U was a epic fuck up. With their first party exclusives and with some 3rd party support they could be either first or second in the console race.

It does nothing for me either. I had the same reaction to it last year when they first announced it. Not crazy about the dragon game either but it does look appealing. I will give Xbox credit. When they announce a title it usually releases within a year or two after its announced. God Of War and Spiderman are the only two titles that you can probably put a pin in the 2017 calendar year.

I don't see God of war or Spider-Man coming out in 2017. I would actually be worried if Spider-Man comes out when the movie does because those games never work.

As for Recore.... I'm excited. I love platform games like that.

My main issue with Microsoft right now is that they are holding on to all these fucking franchises by Rare and aren't doing shit with them. I can't even bring up what happened with Fable. I might shead a tear.

Finally got around to playing the demo of Doom they gave out. I really want to like it but the speed of the game kills me. I just don't care for it.

No way God Of War is releasing in 2017. I could see GOW releasing in the first quarter 2018 or holiday 2018. I think Spiderman will release a month or two before Spiderman homecoming (2017) Google says Spiderman homecoming is releasing in 2017 If that date changes then i think the date for that game will change.

Most of Sony's AAA games this generation got delayed so......

Not really. Played Pokemon for like a half hour. Announced Mario Party, Paper Mario and a new Rhythm Heaven. And pretty much gave us the weak specs comment.

Edit-Forgot about the new Amiibos......

Who's going to make them rare sucks now.

I'm nervous about this game if it comes out before homecoming... Right now it looks good but sucker punch couldn't have been working on this that long.

Nintendo should get Konami to do a exclusive Castlevania title (whoever did those two last gen titles) do a new Double Dragon. They're not doing anything new or even current. Sale consumers on the nostalgia of the software.

Well the problem is non 1st party exclusives don't sell on Nintendo system. The last one to do reasonably well was the resident evil series on the GameCube. So why would any developer invest in a platform that's not profitable.

Finally the Last Guardian is coming in October. I basically gave up on that game coming out but to my surprise it's gonna drop. I played Shadow of Colossus several times, game is still fun to play. I played ICO about couple years ago and that was a cool game as well. So I'm expecting this game to be good also.

The release month for the movie is July 2017 I can't remember any AAA game releasing in July being a hit. That why i said a month or two before. If it does release the same month as the movie, then you know this game will be trash just like the last spiderman game lol.
