Former Washington coach Mike Shanahan says quarterback Robert Griffin III and owner Daniel Snyder conspired on a plan to change the team’s offense after Griffin’s rookie year, with Griffin then sitting Shanahan down and informing him that he would no longer run many of the plays that Shanahan had called.

According to TheUndefeated.com, Griffin called a meeting with Shanahan, his son and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur in February of 2013 and told them to let him speak without interruption. He then informed them that there were 19 plays in Washington’s offense that he would no longer run because he believed he needed to be treated like a pocket passer and not a running quarterback.

Shanahan said he could tell by the way Griffin was talking that he had previously gone over the issue with Snyder.

“When Robert is standing there going through all of that, I know it’s coming from Dan,” Shanahan said. “When Robert talked about ‘unacceptable,’ that was a word Dan used all the time. He was using phrases Dan used all the time. There’s only one way a guy who’s going into his second year would do something like this: If he sat down with the owner and the owner believed that this is the way he should be used. He had to have the full support of the owner and, in my opinion, the general manager to even have a conversation like that. He just had the best year for a rookie QB in the history of the game. You got selected to the Pro Bowl. We went to the playoffs.”

Griffin was concerned about his own health, coming off a season that ended with a serious knee injury in the playoffs. But Shanahan says he was concerned about Griffin’s health, too, and was baffled at Griffin’s approach.

“We tried to get him to slide,” Shanahan said. “We tried to get him to throw the ball away. If he had told me he was hurt, I would have taken him out of the [playoff] game. To hear him . . . it was really incredible.”

Shanahan says he immediately confronted Snyder, warning him that it was wrong to use him as a pawn.

“I said to Dan, ‘Do you realize what you’re doing to this kid?’” Shanahan said.

Snyder refused to comment on the report, but it’s consistent with longstanding talk around the NFL that Shanahan felt undermined in his attempts to build an offense around Griffin. Ultimately, Snyder fired Shanahan 11 months after that meeting with Griffin. Now Shanahan is out of the NFL, Griffin is in Cleveland and Jay Gruden is coaching Kirk Cousins in Washington — hopefully without interference from Snyder.

Dayummmm...Shanahan wanted to ride the Stallion to the meat packing plant. I don't blame Griffin for having a meeting to stop all the run plays.

Sounds like he said don't kill me with these 19 plays and they said fuck you and your health.

It's so obvious that's what it was. He says they tried to get him to slide

He doesn't have to slide if you don't call those shitty 19 plays..

Stay out of the nfl pos
right

Even local media/analysts here in town would comment on the reckless way Shanghan was utilizing Griffin, and said it was gonna get him killed.

Didnt read the article... But did i mentions Shannys record before Robert got to town in two seasons?

Does it mention Shanny calling a pass play his rookie year which lined Robert up at wideout and had him going downfield as option one in a fade route that nearly got him killed?

Lastly, why does Shanny keep talking about this kid?

Am i reading something wrong and ya'll reading something totally different? I read Shanahan wanted him to do a slide. And ya'll actin like this a bad thing. Or is this another thing where someone says something an in your infinite knowledge you decide it's something else?

Nah RGIII did it to himself. He should have been sliding when he got that first knee injury it really WAS his own fault because it was in the open field and he had more than ample time to make the right choice but he made the wrong one. I have no love for Shanahan. Maybe he was calling too many run pays but I don't follow the skinneds ( :o ) closely enough to speak on that

Trying to muddy his name now that he's in a different situation

He thought he would get RG black balled from the league

As,much I'm grateful for Shanahan for building the Denver team in the late 90's,after Elway retired he hasn't done shit in the league since....

I don't understand, how a coach continues to talk about his former quarterback, when that quarterback is the reason, why he wasn't fired that season.

It's a bad thing because he wouldn't ask a white athletic qb to slide if he was getting hurt. He'd stop calling the running plays that got him hurt.

The qb is the most protected position until a black qb is running it.
Then it's a week by week audition

You don't have to slide if you stop making the qb run

Bro, EVERYBODY was on their way out the door that season... Shanny came out, threw in the towel and said he was evaluating talent for the next season. RG3 went on a nuts run, rescued the season, won the division... and all them cacs not only kept their jobs but they all got raises!!!! Mike Shanahan is a piece of shit.

Lmaoo fuck Mike Shannihan and Gruden.. And see how the cac trying to imply Robert can't speak or think for himself and instead using words Sydner used?

Fuck this cac for real
I couldn't get through the first paragraph. It woulda been bubbles and rainbows in DC had SHANNAHAN not kept RG3 in the game during playoffs his rookie year. Shanny fucked that up and everyone in DC knew it. He's lucky he wasn't fired on the spot.

So like i said... you have no evidence he did exactly what Shanahan said he was.

You didn't say that. You didn't understand why asking him to slide was a bad thing
So I tried to explain it to you. If you don't get it that's perfectly fine but it has nothing to do with my personal opinion it has everything to do with what happened to him injury wise with the plays in question
You nor I nor anyone can dispute that.

So a QB, goes to his head coach with demands to maximize HIS talent??? If he was white, they would have called it leadership.

Black man (well maybe, sorta kinda?) was physically destroyed out of spite. Shannahan and the current coach let RGIII get damaged.

Coaches ain't shit, and are vindictive. Their contracts are guaranteed, they get fired and dont give a fuck, on to the next
