My take on Magic is very simple... He was a defensive minus, which is not uncommon among point guards. He was pretty slow and guarded more forwards than he did point guards, which was intentional because he would get beaten off the dribble by most. He was solid as a team defender, played the passing lanes a lot and got a lot of steals. Overall I'd say his defence was not notable, either for being good or being bad.

Magic regularly ran from playing opposing PGs because he would get roasted, normally played a slower weaker player to hide the fact that he was a barely average defender.
