Warner Bros. spent a superhero-sized $28 million on national TV trailer spots in the U.S. forBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice prior to the film's release, more than was shelled out for fellow tentpoles Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Age of Ultron, according to iSpot.tv estimates.
The might of the marketing push for Batman v Superman underscores how Warner Bros. left nothing to chance in promoting Zack Snyder's movie, which launches DC Entertainment's cinematic universe in the battle to rival Marvel. The value of the national TV spend is estimated to be closer to $35 million, but discounted rates negotiated by the studio brought the actual buy down, according to insiders.
By all accounts, it paid off. BvS opened to a record $170.1 million at the North American box office over Easter weekend, the No. 6 opening of all time and the No. 4 opening for a comic book adaptation behind a trio of Marvel titles, not accounting for inflation. That's despite poor reviews and being criticized by some comic book fans. (It's also one of the few marquee superhero films to earn a B CinemaScore; most have earned some variation of an A grade.)
Overseas, BvS — teaming Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) for the first time on the big screen, as well as marking the feature film debut of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) — took in $254 million from 66 markets for a global bow of $424.1 million, the No. 1 superhero launch in history and one of the top numbers ever. The big caveat is that the movie opened everywhere at the same time, including in China, a benefit most tentpoles don't enjoy.
It's not unheard of for a Hollywood studio to allocate $175 million to $200 million on a worldwide marketing campaign for a mega-tentpole such as BvS, although Warner Bros. sources say the spend was in the $150 million-$160 million range, since digital marketing, an increasing percentage of any marketing budget, has brought down costs over the past two years.
The iSpot numbers only apply to the U.S., where, prior the film's release, Warner Bros. aired 20 versions of the BvS trailer 2,991 times since Jan. 9. In comparison, Disney and Lucasfilm spent $25.5 million to advertise 24 versions of the Star Wars trailer 1,913 times.
Additionally, five co-branded BvS ads paid for by promotional partners Jeep, Dodge, General Mills and Turkish Airlines resulted in an estimated push of $18.5 million. Toy ads tied to the movie added another $3.2 million, bringing the total ad spend on the movie to $46.4 million.
Still, that's nothing compared to co-branded TV spots for Star Wars prior that movie's release in late December, which iSpot values at $68.1 million for a total $93.6 million.
Looking at other superhero movies, Disney and Marvel spent $17 million on trailer ads forAvengers: Age of Ultron prior the movie's release in May 2015. Co-branded spots added another $16.2 million to the pot for a total $33.2 million, including promos on Disney-owned channels including Disney Channel and ABC Family.
More recently, Fox spent $23.4 million on national trailer spots for its R-rated, superhero blockbuster, Deadpool. Co-branded ads brought the total spend to $25.8 million, according to iSpot.
BvS would seem to set a new bar for superhero movies in terms of co-brands, with Warners scoring 130 partners worldwide. A key player was Turkish Airlines, which has never before worked with a Hollywood studio. The airline paid for a Super Bowl spot and made TV, print, outdoor and online spends in more than 40 international markets. Doritos and Chrysler also made a global push, including a co-branded Jeep Renegade ad featuring Affleck in character as Bruce Wayne.
"Warner Bros. promoted this film with a strong push of traditional trailer placements and unique co-branded spots set in the iconic Gotham City. Although co-branded efforts around movies are starting to become the norm for blockbuster-type releases, the studio took them to a new creative level for Batman v Superman," said Jon Cappetta, entertainment analyst with Fabric Media, which represents iSpot.
Warners kicked off its marketing push for BvS at Comic-Con in summer 2015. The studio later struck key digital partnerships with Facebook, Snapchat, Amazon and Omaze. And it provided exclusive live-streaming content during the NCAA's March Madness.

According to Latino-Review, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s budget has risen to $410 million. Currently, 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tidesis the record holder for most expensive movie, with total production costs adding upto $410.6 million. So it’s quite possible that DC’s next movie could surpass that figure. This news comes two weeks after it was reported that Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War movies might come with a $1 billion price tag. While that number sounds way too high to be real, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s total cost at least seems plausible.
There are a number of factors that could account for this massive budget. For one thing, the movie has a lot of big name actors, like Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, and Jesse Eisenberg, and no doubt their salaries were quite high. Then there was the extended principal photography, which lasted from May 2014 to December 2014 and saw various location shoots around the United States. Finally, we can’t forget all the visual effects work, from Superman and Wonder Woman’s powers to Batman fighting in his massive armor to whatever mystery powerhouse the heroes have to fight. That part of post-production finished only a few days ago, so clearly there’s going to be a lot of visually stimulating content. Even if the $410 million figure isn’t accurate, it wouldn’t be surprising if Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice still ranks near the top of the list of most expensive movies.
The article also notes that Zack Snyder won’t have as much free reign with the budget for Justice League Part One and Part Two, which are about to begin a 16-month production run. Instead, those movies will be budgeted at a combined $500 million. That amount is certainly nothing to sneeze at for a blockbuster, but it does indicate that Warner Bros. isn’t willing to go extremely high on all their DC big screen productions. All this being said, with all the hype surrounding Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the enormous popularity of the leading characters, it’s likely that the movie will make back its budget, and then some…or should I say, and then A LOT!

With the major tentpole releases that studios are relying upon in ever-increasing numbers, audiences are deciding whether they like the movie or not before they even see it. THE FORCE AWAKENS was decreed the savior of the STAR WARS universe the second J.J. Abrams started tweeting pictures of the set. The question surrounding BvS wasn’t so much whether or not Snyder failed to deliver as it was how colossal of a failure it would be. I’m already cringing at what the response to this summer’s GHOSTBUSTERS reboot will be like. The internet has collectively hated that movie on principle since the first table read.
While people are still going to the movies, it increasingly feels like nobody’s actually seeing the movie they came to watch. They’re watching their preconceived idea of the movie for the sole purpose of confirming the opinion they formed months ago. There are a lot of problems with this approach but let’s start with the most obvious one. Hate-watching a movie doesn’t work.
I think we can all agree that nobody involved with BvS was actively trying to piss you off. Not only were they trying to make a good movie, they had the daunting task of setting up an entire network of other movies down the line. Whether or not that’s a good thing is a separate argument but it’s the new reality of big-budget franchise filmmaking. But they all wanted you to like this movie. If you run into Ben Affleck in a checkout line and explain to him all the ways his movie made no sense, he’d probably feel bad and apologize for wasting your time. But let’s face it. You’re not going to (and even if you did, you’d be acting like a bit of a douche).
No, the only reaction that really counts here is your money in Warner Bros.’ coffers. No matter how loudly you complain or how many social media accounts you use to express your displeasure with the movie, that money is what tells the studio that they’re on the right track. The only shot any of us had at throwing a monkey wrench into Snyder’s plans for a dark ‘n’ gritty DC Universe was not showing up this weekend and we blew it big time. And no one can accuse the WB of mismarketing the movie. If you saw MAN OF STEEL or any of the trailers or promo materials, you knew exactly what you were getting into. If this wasn’t the Superman movie you wanted, you should have stayed home.
Let me be clear, I’m in no way saying that BvS is a great movie or beyond criticism. This essay puts me in the awkward position of semi-defending a movie that quite honestly has a lot of problems. Big ones. But many of the complaints being leveled at the movie have more to do with the idea of what it “should” have been than with what it actually is. That isn’t analysis or criticism. It’s just fandom at its worst, posturing with no real substance to back it up.
Take one of the most common refrains: that Zack Snyder gets the characters wrong. What this actually means is Snyder’s interpretation doesn’t match the image you have. There have probably been thousands of Batman and Superman stories told over the years and only the most devout fan has read or seen them all. They’ve been interpreted in many different ways, none of which are “wrong”.
Let me put it this way. You don’t hear theatre critics say that an actor or director got Hamlet “wrong”. There are countless ways to interpret the character, which is what makes the play endlessly fascinating some 400+ years later. And that guy is always stuck in the same story, doing the same things and saying the same words. For years, comic books fans have labored mightily to get their favorite medium taken seriously as an art form. But for all the progress they’ve made, they still don’t seem to understand there is no “right” and “wrong” in art.
If you’re going to criticize the way the characters are depicted, at least do it based on what’s actually in the movie and not your fond memories of Christopher Reeve or Christian Bale. I think it’s fair to say that whatever Snyder’s vision of Superman is, he doesn’t do a very good job communicating it in this movie. He seems pretty conflicted about his role on Earth but also apparently has a big enough ego that he wants to be the only player in the superhero game. Why does he even give a shit what Batman gets up to in Gotham? It seems like Bats has been doing pretty well without him for quite some time, so why not just leave well enough alone?
Getting back to the Right v Wrong arguments, there seems to be a consensus that the Marvel method of constructing an extended cinematic universe is right, while whatever DC is doing is wrong. Well, no. Marvel’s plan was methodical, ambitious and ultimately successful but not without its missteps. They started with IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, two properties that seemed like pretty safe bets considering what they had to work with at the time. They included just enough threads to tie things together if the plan worked but if they didn’t, it wouldn’t necessarily sink the entire enterprise. IRON MAN worked like gangbusters. THE HULK, not so much. When audiences didn’t respond as well to that movie as Marvel had hoped, the powers that be said, “OK, we’re not going to necessarily ignore the events of this movie but creatively, we’ll just wipe the decks clean. Next time we need the Hulk, we’ll try something else.”
DC’s attempt is a bit riskier. It doesn’t really matter if you liked Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg in BvS ‘cause you’re getting movies about ‘em anyway. There are absolutely elements of BvS that currently make exactly zero sense because they’re just there to set up JUSTICE LEAGUE. But guess what? That’s the world you created. Every time you obsessively pore over all the links and Easter eggs in the Marvel movies and TV shows, you’re helping to transform cinematic storytelling into something closer to longform television storytelling. And something tells me it’s only going to get worse.
Besides, anybody who says every building block in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a five-star masterpiece is delusional. I’ve enjoyed these movies very much but they rely on many of the same convenient plot points and dubious story mechanics that BvS is currently being vilified for. And as the universe has become increasingly complex, the number of ground-laying moments for future payoffs has grown, with a lot of things that don’t really make sense within the context of the story being told. Was Batman’s nightmare/vision/whatever-the-hell really necessary for this movie? Nope. Remind me again why Thor had to go swimming in that mystic pool in AGE OF ULTRON.
Superheroes, sci-fi and fantasy have officially taken over mainstream popular culture. So perhaps it’s not surprising that the people who loved them first have proprietary feelings toward their favorite characters. There’s a conversation to be had about these movies, what they do well and where they could use improvement, but a lot of these fans aren’t interested in having it. They’re content to be the loudest voice in the echo chamber, parroting back unshakable opinions they formed months ago when they saw the first trailer. It doesn’t help filmmaking and it’s tearing fandom apart at the seams, creating a toxic environment where your only options are to love something unreservedly or despise it unflinchingly. Either way, you’re not going to change the minds of people who feel differently, especially if you’re not willing to listen as well. And you’re definitely not going to prevent more movies just like this one from being made if you marched off opening weekend to see it in all your righteous anger. Studios don’t care what attitude you bring with you into the theatre. They just care about the money you leave behind at the box office.

Actually I've liked all of them. I didn't think I would but they have grown on me and I like the different take on Timms animated Justice league. The voice acting this taking a lot to get use to but I love them.
I will agree. It wasn't their best but the action was nice and I love this version of superman. When have you ever seen dude in a run down apartment... Doing fucking laundry. He just has this playful nerdiness about him that I wish they would translate to the movies.
I've been watching young justice season 2 on Netflix and if they have a kick starter for season 3 I would drop 50 on it. That shit is fire
I kinda want the solo Batman film before the JL movie. A prequel that shows the breakdown from the hero who see's the value of human life to the broken man who lost a partner, friend, and brother in Robin. More importantly we need to know how long it's been since Robin was murdered. Because there's little to know reason I can see Batman fighting Joker and locking him away in Arkham or Blackgate with his mind set in BVS.

Young Justice is a classic. I actually went back and started watching the old school teen titans. That first season was bs but after that... It got really deep. Man I wish that was still on.
I'm trying to figure out why he didn't murder joker since he has no problems murdering other people.
That's going to be a real concern if further batmans are going to be based around this time. His entire rogues Gallery would be in the morgue by batman 2.
Based on the ending of Bruce saying he failed Superman I think we're go back to seeing the Batman with the no killing rule. Even during the scene he rescued Martha he took everyone down by none lethal means except for the dude with the pyro pack.
Yeah a female friend recommended the Kiss Anime site to me some months ago. While looking for Rick and Morty episodes I found that they had a sister site in Kiss Cartoons. Only problem is that they don't have the 90's Disney shows like Dark Wing Duck. My honestly and impartial thoughts: Batman V Superman

In order to full-fill my agreement with a member on the board this is my first ever-thoughts/review, if you will, on Batman v Superman movie. A few days before the movie came out I went dark, not only here but else where on the web. I didn't want to see or read any leaks or others opinions on the movie etc. Best as I tried that task served nearly impossible when you think about the scope of the movie. Early fan screenings were reportedly positive mostly, with a few niblets of okay sprinkled throughout. Of-course being a huge fan of this pending movie I was excited! But, I knew that wouldn't tell the whole story until the critics weighed in and boy did they ever! Rotten Tomateos had it at about 44% with critics at the time.by Tical
Fast-forward to opening weekend, Saturday night, my initial of two viewings of the movie. In a jam pack theatre, 11:15pm, I did my best to put behind all the critics criticism of the movies pacing, terrible edits, questionable decisions, incoherent storyline etc and I just watch the movie critically. When it was over I must of sat in my seat for a good 15-20 minutes in silence. I felt ambiguous! It was obvious the movie wasn't anywhere near the RT score of 28-32% at the time of my viewing. This wasn't The Last Airbender, Fantastic Four etc. But, what was it? What did I just watch? The answer coalesced into "Not A Comic Book Movie" Period. Sure it featured comic book characters, BUT this movie for all intent and purpose: Looked and felt and told a story in away, that I certainly have never experienced before, with any other film in the genre(CBM)
Thus to keep this "review/analysis/impressions" succinct I will conclude it in this way. If, anyone goes and HOLDS ONTO watching and experiencing this movie as a traditional CBM then there is a good-great chance that you may not walk away completely thrilled with what you saw. Likely and from the few readings I did this is what the critics did and expected and forthwith cast their ballots: TERRIBLE! BAD! INCOHERENT! WHAT A MESS!
However, if you aligned your thoughts more to a psychological thriller steeped with thesis on Morality, Psychosis, Imaginary wrapped in metaphor exploring works like "The problem with evil" colored with a "messianic figure"(Not coincidental that the movie was released Easter weekend). Then it becames strikingly clear that WB/DC made a bold and brave choice and just took "CBM" on film ala Sandman to another realm.
I know he threw a batarang into a guys chest. Yeah maybe I'm in denial a bit. They've done the Dark Knight returns story now. Hopefully since the backlash they will give us the Batman that will cripple you and if you happen to die from your injuries so be it but won't murder criminals.
