Carmelo Anthony: Phil Jackson won't be Knicks' coach
INDIANAPOLIS - When Carmelo Anthony has spoken about the Knicks’ struggles in the past, he has maintained a belief in Phil Jackson at the center of his thought process.
But with Anthony’s frustration level that has grown with the Knicks' mounting dysfunction, he hasn't found an answer from Jackson, acknowledging Wednesday that he has not spoken with Jackson and all he knows is that Jackson isn't about to step to the bench to coach the Knicks out of their hole.
“Phil’s not coming down,” Anthony said. “He’s not sitting on that sideline. Those days are long gone.”
It’s no surprise that Jackson isn't coaching again, a point that Jackson has willingly admitted with his health no longer permitting him to handle the arduous schedule. With Jackson in the front office he has had less of a relationship with Anthony and the Knicks than he did with his teams in Chicago and Los Angeles.
He rarely interacts with the players and even acknowledged when he fired Derek Fisher that he had only rare communications via email with the coach he put in place. There were no discussions with Anthony at the trade deadline or after it, and no words of inspiration to the team now.
“I don’t think it’s to the point where when he was coaching, and he had that player-coach relationship,” Anthony said. “He’s more in the front office, doing front office work right now. I don’t think it’s the same relationship.”
And Jackson is in a different place now, but the trouble is that faith is fading and there is little reason to believe anymore. The Knicks entered Wednesday night's game against the Pacers with 12 losses in their last 14 games, including three of four since Kurt Rambis took over.
It was the latest loss, a 27-point home loss to Toronto on Monday, that seemed to push Anthony to a new level of frustration. He hurried out of Madison Square Garden after that game, admitting a need to get home and decompress.
“It was just kind of a bad day, bad night,” Anthony said. “Sometimes it hits you and you don’t know how to react to it. The best thing to do is get yourself away from it for a little bit, step out of it and relax, decompress a little bit and remove yourself and look at it from the outside looking in sometimes. That was all that case was.
“I can’t really give you the details (of what he sees). Sometimes you got to have some me time. That night was for me to go home and be with my family and get away from it.”
He said he was better by the next day, but the situation is not.
“Part of it is the fact that you try to remain so positive throughout the whole situation,” he said. “Some days it just hits you. It challenges you as a person, as player, as a competitor and you just got to adapt to that in the heat of the moment.”
