Decision On Crossover Between SUPERGIRL And THE FLASH Will Be Made In The Next Month
It sounds like the decision about a crossover between Supergirl andThe Flash will be made within the next four weeks, as both producer Greg Berlanti and CW boss Mark Pedowitz have provided a very positive update on the chances of this becoming a reality. Check it out!
Had The CW not passed on Supergirl, it would have no doubt been a very different series. However, what we would have lost in references to the Man of Steel, we would have gained in crossovers with Arrow and The Flash, but the adventures of Kara Danvers and the D.E.O. playing out on CBS obviously hinder that in a very complicated way.
We have heard talk of a crossover featuring Supergirl and the Scarlet Speedster though, and now producer Greg Berlanti has offered a solid update on where things stand with that. "I would love it, a lot of things would have to go right and people would have to say ‘Yes,'", he explains. "It would have to figured out very soon. It would all have to be figured out in the next month or so. As it remains right now we’ve talked internally about how cool it would be, but we haven’t had official conversations. [The CW chief Mark Pedowitz] is supportive."
Proving that support, Pedowitz was actually quoted (via Variety) as saying at the TCAs today that,"We are open if Greg [Berlanti], Marc [Guggenheim] and Andrew [Kreisberg] and Ali Adler can find a way to do it, we’re open to do it. The question is, can they find a way in all their business."The mention of Guggenheim points to Green Arrow also factoring into this crossover, and you have to believe that both networks would benefit from the ratings something like this would result in. One of prime-time TV’s most jaw-dropping moments happened last year on Supergirl when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), the apparently xenophobic leader of the Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO), was revealed to be none other than J’onn J’onzz, also known as Martian Manhunter. Since then, Harewood, who previously played CIA honcho David Estes onHomeland, has quickly become a fan favorite. And he finds playing an extraterrestrial shape-shifter similar to his own experiences in Hollywood. “Coming from England to L.A., I was away from my friends and family,” he said. “Martian Manhunter lost his entire family with the destruction of his planet and has a loneliness and melancholy that I could relate to.”
Tonight’s episode of Supergirl promises to flesh out more of Martian Manhunter’s backstory with the arrival of the White Martians. “J’onn has to confront a being that was responsible for the destruction of his people,” Harewood explained. “We find out how he becomes ‘The Last Son of Mars.’” Vulture caught up with Harewood to talk about how he landed this plum role, the opportunities for black British actors in Hollywood, and the need for more diverse storytelling in British historical dramas.
How did you land the role of Hank Henshaw?
I was still in Los Angeles for pilot season. Selfie had been canceled, and I was getting ready to go back home when my manager suggested I hang around for a couple more weeks to see if any other opportunities came up. I was brought in to meet executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. They sat me down and said they were shooting a pilot forSupergirl, and would I be interested? I read the script and loved it, although I still wasn’t sure who Hank Henshaw was. When I did the screen test, I did it with both an American and British accent, and eventually they decided Hank was American.
How soon did you find out Hank Henshaw was really J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter?
I found out after the pilot was picked up. Andrew called me into his office, gave me a pile of Martian Manhunter comics, and told me, “This is who you’ll be playing.” Martian Manhunter is such a great character with a rich mythology. And it was really helpful because before I was really struggling to get a handle on who Hank Henshaw was.
You are the sixth black actor to portray Martian Manhunter in the DC Universe in both the live and animated series. Watching your character on Supergirl I can’t help but think about Ralph Ellison’s protagonist in The Invisible Man — he is everyone and no one. Do you think there’s a connection there?
I do know in the 1960s comics, Martian Manhunter took on the form of a black man — that could have been influenced by the political climate back then. J’onn Jonzz is this very powerful person who can wipe the floor with you but has to hide who he is from the world in order to blend in. I think it’s a stroke of genius to make him black.
Last week, actor Idris Elba spoke before Parliament about the need for more diversity on British television and said that growing up, while his community was diverse, he did not see that reflected in the shows he watched as a child.
Even now the shows still show a lack of diversity. American television, for all its faults, still has a black presence in shows and even in commercials. You’ll see black people in automobile ads, black women starring on their own television shows. We don’t see that on British television. The reason being that the decisions are being made by white, middle-class men, and their shows cater to a certain demographic. This is why you see black British actors coming to America, because they know there are more opportunities. I didn’t leave the U.K. because I wanted to be famous — I came here to find work because I was struggling to find work as a black actor. We’ve been banging around this issue for years. In the beginning we were laughed at, and now people are really paying attention.
There’s been discussion of a black British invasion where some feel that actors like David Oyelowo and Chiwetel Ejiofor are taking away opportunities from their African-American counterparts. What are your thoughts on this critique?
Hollywood has always had a fascination with casting British actors in general, like Sir Laurence Olivier, Charlie Chaplin, Charles Laughton, and now it’s back in vogue. I can certainly understand the frustration if people feel that way, but I’m also finding a lot of great opportunities here and really enjoying these roles that I couldn’t find in my own country.
The Guardian published an essay arguing that British historical dramas tend to “whitewash” history and leave out people of color. Do you agree with the author’s point of view?
Without a doubt, the majority of historical period dramas tend to be told from a certain perspective. At least in America, black people have some visibility in period dramas, although it’s usually in the form of slaves or servitude. I believe the U.S. is still years ahead in its depiction of African-Americans in history, in comparison to England, where they are constantly making historical dramas where black people don’t even exist. We’ve yet to deal with the uncomfortable history of England being involved in the transatlantic slave trade, whereas America has at least made some movies dealing with its racial history. It almost seems that black people didn’t exist in England until after World War II, but there are stories of important people of color in 18th- and 19th-century England. This speaks to the fact that the majority of those films are made and produced mostly by Caucasians. What does seem to be happening rapidly is the awareness of this problem, as evidenced by the #OscarsSoWhite campaign. Hopefully, not far behind this awareness is concrete change.

Side note is anybody still watching this show. I've tried, but it has been to CBS-afied for my liking. I don't understand how Greg's other comic book shows are so amazing and this shit is so fucking lame.

because although it took the suits decades to REALLY figure this out comic book sci fi geeks got money and they come in ALL shapes sizes and colors.

The problem with Supergirl is that it has too much going on. It also doesn't make much sense. In this shows universe, everybody seems to have some kind of Kryptonite. You got regular humans taking on 5 criminal Kryptonians by themselves. It's like the showrunners don't get that by making the Kryptonians so weak.... they have made Supergirl and (Gasp) Superman look extremely weak. Superman also comes across as a dick because he isn't helping his cousin. They played it off by having him text her to say that "he is going to let her figure out how to be her own hero." WTF is this bullshit. She is taking on a alien criminals and a ARMY of Kryptonians. I mean fucking Zod took over the God damn world in Superman 2 with only three fucking Kyptonians. Then we saw Zod basically destroy metropolis and almost take over the world again with only three Kyptonians. This show has a fucking army of them. ???????????

i think they ruined it for a lot of people with that first trailer because it was so "lifetime" and people decided they were going to hate it no matter what.

Ol' girls Husband was a fucking war criminal on Krypton. He is equally as strong as Supergirl. She has been Supergirl for what a couple months now. HOW IN THE FUCK was she laying any kind of punches on him.
And if Ol' girl had a suit that countered the effects of Kryptonite, how could she be stabbed by a Kryptonite sword. Wouldn't it be just a regular sword.
Also, How in the fuck did that get Supergirl out of an Apartment building in a big metropolis with an Alien creature on her chest without anyone from the building randomly seeing this shit.

I have to say....Supergirl is better than Gotham and better than Smallville ever was to me.
oh hell no, this show is so cringe worthy. All the over dramatic scenes with her sister just takes away from the show and makes it some goofy kid show.

I just started watching this and I had to immediately stop.... There are fucking 7 evil kryptonians on earth. In what world would we ever have 7 kryptonians on earth and Superman is not involved. This is just unacceptable.

Then why do they keep bringing up superman in every episode. Last night they went to the fortress of solitude. So are you telling me that the first time she goes to the fortress is with jimmy Olsen. Come on now...
