238 million

What was the underlying factor that made Avatar reach that mark? That movie was just, ok.
It was the 1st and pretty much only movie during and since the 3d rejuvenation to correctly utilize 3d. The entire movie was constructed and shot specifically for 3d. Not that quick flash shit movies do with like a coffee cup or some shit it was the entire environment at all times so it made you feel like you were actually in the movie world. The movie was trash. The experience is why people kept coming back. It was more of an event than a movie you paid attention to. That's why it did those numbers. Even if you saw it people would say you didn't really see it until you saw it in 3d

Thanks for adding the specifics. But I still don't understand how that explains almost 3 billion dollars? For example, I saw it in a regular theater and didn't bother with the 3D nonsense and most of the people I know did the same. If you extrapolate on that thought and we say how many more people saw Avatar in 3D compared to any other movie because " you didn't really see it until you saw it in 3d?" Does that equal nearly X+Y = 3B?

Clearly, You nor anyone else that spends 90% of your time criticizing any movie company not named Marvel don't want these companies to have success. That's a given wether you realize it of not! By default and by the strength of your criticism and arguments you want every movie studio to create live-action movies that feel like Marvel products.

What's ironic about that and as a comic-book fan you should know this is that Comic-Books are amazing because they are all so different and carry so many different messages and tone(s). Yet, When that's given to you in a cinematic universe all you can do is complain they aren't all like Apple..sorry I meant Marvel!
dude -you don't pay attention....
I jump all over Marvel too for their creative decisions but the marketing is flawless - WB is making poor choices creatively and marketing
WB are idiots for not fucking with Bruce Timm for a Justice League cinematic universe
I want good movies - period
No more fantastic 4 or Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern - no more giant menacing space clouds
no more baby daddy superman, or batman with nipples

exactly almost everyone at my job saw the movie at least 5x
I personally saw it 3x - all in 3d

Ok, I remember that. I knew it had something to do with 3D, but i couldn't remember the specifics.

So for almost 5 MONTHS it had zero competition.

Ok, then that makes all the sense in the world. There was nothing to knock it off its spot. 2010 was a dud year when I think about it.

This is also why I've been telling the posters in this thread it's going to be extremely hard for Stars Wars to overtake Avatar! Star Wars has a little less than 1 month to do that. After-which, it's getting live comic-book and Pixar-type movie competition.

y'all are underestimating a lot of factors
screen numbers are not going down this weekend, normally 2nd week screens are reduced...

1. the trend now is that this movie will cross 1 billion in less than 10 days after release!
2. Its already over $700 mill and it opens in India tomorrow and China January 9th...
it will already be well over 1 billion before the China opening
3. Geeks in the western world are paying to see this movie multiple times (3-5x) - there are still high numbers of group meetups being set
4. forget geeks - its now a social must see - similar to Avatar, people that don't normally go to the movies are paying to see this film.

Maybe not Avatar but Titanic is dropping to #3

Shit I stilll have not seen Avatar since I didn't see it in 3-D. Silly of him to think that 3 more sequels will be successful.

3d costs put it over the top easily. im willing to bet it had one of the biggest 3d shares of any movie ever released. that's why it made all that money. it probably made a billion in 3d alone

Star wars has was avatar didn't have, about 3 or 4 generations of people who support it. People remember when it first came out, exposed their kids to it and now are exposing their own kids to it. It's on the level of being an event more than a movie so it def has a realistic chance especially considering people actually enjoyed it. It doesn't matter if animation movies or anything else come into play because the people who have been waiting for star wars and star wars alone, who watch the cartoon, who know all about the galaxies and shit are going to go and watch it again for any number of random reasons including situations like they're not doing anything else so they'll go catch star wars to pass the time and shit.

analyst's report:

After Wednesday's solid haul, pulling in almost an exactly even $38 million and change each domestica and foreign, The Force Awakens passed $750 million worldwide, hitting $765.9 million overall. If as strong a Christmas day as expected hits tomorrow, that means Star Wars could very well pass $1 billion in worldwide gross tomorrow, after just over a week in any market. That would mean, of course, more records, including the fastest to hit that global tally.

391 domestic now...i think state side it might get Avatar but it will have to do 2 billion globally to have a shot at the all time number...

that is going to b tuff...:smh:

like a lot have said...it`s enuff geeks & 2nd & 3rd generation folks state side to get the domestic mark but that global mark...i dunno...

it will be a billion by Monday, lets just be amazed by that for now....

fyi- so far SW is outperforming Avatar's release by 30%

I'm still trying to figure it out. It came out when I was overseas and I've never seen a movie that get much attention. Stars is not doing 3 Billion. It's not catching avatar.

On another note, Disney made the media acquisition of the all-time buying Lucas Film for "only" 4B.

Indeed, But I'm confident the deal was done in such a way that Mr.Lucas is getting all sort of percentages left and right off all movies and merchandises etc. Seriously doubt it was "only" 4B and that's that!

It was an all-stock deal so he's a shareholder in Disney now. So if the stock does well, he has some upside there.

he`s lousy business man then....

wait ...he`s a billionaire....i take that back....:rolleyes2:

Damn, "Spectre" flopped.

Not really shocked though.

It might have been a flop domestically with a $245 million production budget, but it did more than triple it's domestic haul overseas

Spectre Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $195,384,955 23.3%
+ Foreign: $642,933,706 76.7%

I really think not a lot of people saw that movie in IMAX or at least 3D like it should have been seen.

440 mil domestic...890 world wide...

newest member of the 400 mil club...crazy ...it will b 500 mil plus at the end of the weekend & billion world wide...:eek2:
