34 Predictions for the 2015-16 NBA Season

(1-10)

nba-awards-050715-getty-ftrjpg_s46ifbyelgir1d3ligjp2wu4p.jpg

By Dylan Schroeder on October 27, 2015@DSchroeder34

One of my favorite things to do is to make predictions. I’ll make predictions during games, seasons, movies, TV shows, books, or whatever. It doesn’t really matter what it is, but for some reason I really enjoy throwing out a guess of what I think (or sometimes hope) will happen. It’s no different for me when it’s the start of a sports season.

Predicting the NBA season and awards is almost always a crap shoot because there’s so many different things that happen each NBA offseason that it’s nearly impossible to have a grasp of how each domino will fall — not to mention in-season trades and injuries. Sure, it’s easy to say that LaMarcus Aldridge will help the Spurs and give them a greater chance to win the title this season. But doesn’t the dynamic of Kevin Durant returning make a giant difference? We’re talking Kevin Durant, a bona fide top three player in the entire world. They’re the favorite now, right? Well, Kevin Durant hasn’t played in an NBA game since February. Are we sure he can return to the player that he was? Golden State didn’t lose anybody from their championship roster except David Lee — who wasn’t exactly a key player until he played a few valuable minutes in The Finals — but why is the noise so quiet in regards to them repeating? I mean, they do have the reigning MVP ready to prove that he wasn’t a fluke. And of course, there is LeBron James and his Cavaliers. After he put on one of the greatest Finals performances ever witnessed (without any key contributors besides Tristan Thompson), he will get to take another swing at the Larry O’Brien trophy. However, he’s hoping to have a fully healthy squad this time around. A true crap shoot.

1. Oklahoma City Thunder will Win the Finals
tCkoV1s.jpg

It’s truly amazing to me that the Oklahoma City Thunder haven’t been back to the Finals since 2012. A lot of that is due to awful injury luck, the James Harden trade, and the maturity of their roster. Reaching the 2012 NBA Finals that early was surprising to most — even Durant, Westbrook, and Harden. It was easy for many to say that they’d win 5 or more rings over the next 10-15 years.

Obviously that hasn’t been the case. After failing to reach the NBA Finals another time, the noise shifted to questioning if they could ever win with how their roster is constructed. In my opinion, absolutely. Fans haven’t even seen a fully healthy Thunder team since 2012, so how can you determine that Durant and Westbrook can’t win together?

One of the scariest things in sports is a motivated superstar — Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, etc. This season Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook have something to prove — they’re championship level basketball players. They aren’t just scoring champions, All-Stars, or great regular season players. These are two of the best five players in the NBA — wait for it– ON THE SAME TEAM!

If this team remains fully healthy this season, I believe it will definitely be the season that Kevin Durant wins his first championship. When the Thunder were healthy last season they were dramatically better and nearly unbeatable. Besides, America deserves to see a grown up Durant battle King James in the Finals since we were never treated with a LeBron and Kobe war.

2. Cleveland Cavaliers Win 60+ Games (on way back to the Finals) and Receive the Best Record in the NBA

irving-thompson-pregamejpg-1d9894c25874e263.jpg

After winning 53 games last season, seven more shouldn’t be that hard of a challenge for a team that just reached the NBA Finals. Cleveland is clearly the best team in the Eastern Conference and will cruise back to the Finals for the third time in franchise history.

To be honest, the only reason why the Cavs didn’t win 60 games last season is because they were a new team. This season everybody from their Finals nucleus is returning (with additions of a healthy Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love). Kyrie and Love are special enough players that they should be able to give an aging LeBron nights off without missing a beat.

Cleveland doesn’t just have a chance to grab the best record because they play in the Eastern Conference, but because of how deep they are. It’s silly to think they’re deep now after watching LeBron single-handedly taking over the Finals just last spring, but that was without Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving. Bringing back two healthy All-Star caliber players, adding Mo Williams, and resigning Mozgov, Smith, LeBron, Love, Shumpert, Delly, and Thompson (finally) give them the necessary depth to compete night in and night out.

3. Karl-Anthony Towns Wins Rookie of the Year
100815_KAT.jpg

Winning Rookie of the Year is obviously impressive, but also one of the most deceptive awards that there is in sports. I say this because it doesn’t mean you’re the best player in your class, it doesn’t mean you’re going to be the best, and more times than not it goes to a player who has a great season on a lottery team — Michael Carter-Williams, Tyreke Evans, Emeka Okafor, etc. However, there are plenty of times the award is given to a player that goes on to become an NBA superstar — LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin.

That being said, Towns is the perfect candidate to win the award that his teammate, Andrew Wiggins, took home to Minneapolis last season. There has been a lot of noise about the Timberwolves emerging as a young, exciting team this offseason. They play hard, are extremely athletic, and have had back-to-back first overall picks on their roster (I’m not going to say anything about Anthony Bennett).

Towns has everything you’d hope to have in a big man. He’s got the post moves — turns over both shoulders, has great counters, great patience in the post, excellent feet, and a wide base. Towns has the ability to step outside similar to a LaMarcus Aldridge because he can thump out that 15-18 foot jump shot/fall away effortlessly. The youngster is a fabulous passer for his position and often sees plays develop and players moving before it’s happening. However, maybe the best part of Towns game is his defense. A true rim protector that can also guard his position away from the basket. He’s going to be an amazing player and will start his career by being the best player in his class from the get-go.

*Honorable Mention: Jahlil Okafor*

*Dark Horse Candidates: Mario Hezonja, Rashad Vaughn*

4. Marcus Smart is Your 2015-16 Most Improved Player
marcus-smart-nba-boston-celtics-orlando-magic-850x560.jpg

I say your Most Improved Player because Marcus Smart plays the game the way people want it to be played — dives on the floor, boxes out big men, shares the ball, plays with toughness, backs down from nobody, and his energy bounces off of the crowd. If you’re a Celtics fan (like myself), you’ve already been frothing from the mouth for a season because you know what his potential is.

By far my boldest prediction, but in my opinion it’s really not. He’s opened the eyes of many and most the time this award goes to somebody you totally didn’t expect it to

After watching most of Smart’s games last season, I think I was most impressed with his maturity. He stepped in from day one as an emotional leader of that young Boston team and never looked back. He may have been a rookie, and might only be a sophomore this season, but the Celtics look to Smart for leadership.

This summer, Marcus stepped his abilities up huge from what he was showcasing last season — 24 PPG, 7.5 APG, 2.5 SPG — and you could see he was a different player just by watching the Summer League games. Sure, it was against rookies and players that were fighting for a roster spot, but you could see he’s improved because of the confidence that he played with. Smart was the best player on the court almost every time that he laced up his shoes in the Utah Summer League. Smart has been putting on a point guard clinic all offseason by showing off a new, confident stroke that often finds the bottom of the net, crashing the glass for massive put back jams, or his signature suffocating defense that forces unfortunate prey into throwing the basketball into the hands of Smart’s teammates.

I fully expect Smart to make the next jump this season — maybe not right away — into one of the league’s most exciting point guards. He’s absolute must see TV and once his competitive juices start flowing, there’s hardly anything more appreciative.

*Honorable Mentions: Andrew Wiggins, Andre Drummond, Giannis Antetokounmpo*

*Dark Horse Candidates: Austin Rivers, Aaron Gordon, Otto Porter Jr.*

5. Golden State Will own the Best Home Record in the NBA

477185714-stephen-curry-of-the-golden-state-warriors-gettyimages.jpg

There’s nothing bad to say about the Golden State Warriors. Can you believe one of the (statistically) best teams in the history of the game aren’t being favored to repeat, or even make the NBA Finals again?

As one of those writers who believe the Warriors won’t repeat, let me say, it’s not going to be their fault. They have a stupid talented roster with a reigning MVP that might actually snap Chris Paul’s other ankle at some point this season and give it to his bodyguard, Draymond Green. What Draymond does with Paul’s last good ankle is, well, up to him. I could see Draymond keeping it in his locker as a souvenir, wearing it on a necklace for intimidation like an ancient Mongolian warrior would, or even making DeAndre Jordan buy it back with that new contract that literally everybody knows about.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that the Warriors aren’t going anywhere. They’ve got some of the most skilled players in the entire league, along with the depth, and bullies on their team that can handle any other team’s frontline. It’ll just be much tougher than it was last year because they’d need to do it with targets on their backs.

However, Oracle Arena will remain loud as ever. They might not have fans from “day one”, but they sell out and make the walls shake. Playing in that stadium is one of the biggest advantages in the entire league, especially with their style of play. If you go into Oracle, you can mess around and be down 15 points before you even take a breath. I’d be surprised if they lost more than 5 games at home this season.

6. Carmelo Anthony Finishes as a top Three Scorer

7. Carmelo Anthony plays 70+ games

8. New York Knicks Win Between 25-30 Games

9. Matt Barnes Does Something Historic that Involves Derek Fisher on January 16th

It might not be to the historic degree of the Malice in the Palace, Reggie Miller’s choke sign to Spike Lee, or Larry Bird calling out his shots to his opponents, but it’s going to be epic. I’m not sure what’s going to happen, at all, but I will most definitely be watching.

One of the more underrated parts of this story is that Matt Barnes now has the Captains of the All-NBA Dark Alley Team (Zach Randolph and Tony Allen) wearing the same uniform as him. Anything is possible. ANYTHING IS POSSSSIBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

10. Kevin Durant Wins 2015-16 MVP

usp-nba_-kevin-durant-mvp-press-conference1.jpg

In Bill Simmons’ The Book of Basketball, he has a section where he debates the top “what if’s” in the history of the NBA. He continuously says that he’s going to write a second edition to the book (I doubt it’ll happen), but I’ve already found a “what if” for his newest addition — What if Kevin Durant doesn’t have to miss the 2014-15 season? Or, what if Durant comes back after his second surgery?

Do the Golden State Warriors win the title last season if Oklahoma City remains healthy? Does anybody? The Thunder were amazing last season when they were healthy. Durant had 30 in one half (one half!!!) against Golden State.

Oklahoma City missed the playoffs by one game last season with Durant only playing in 27 games. It’s pretty safe to say that the Thunder would’ve won at least one more game with their MVP in the lineup. Pretend Durant comes back for that final stretch of games and they win one more game and are rewarded the 8th seed in the Western Conference. Are we positive that Golden State wins against the best player in the entire Western Conference and Westbrook, who transformed into a flesh-eating basketball menace?

Kevin Durant is going to set the league on fire. Many have forgotten how God damn talented he is. He’s the best scorer in the entire league, the best crunch-time performer, and is one of the few that can go for 40 whenever he wants to. It’ll only take a couple of months of averaging 30+ points for fans to remember that is SPECIAL

11. Kevin Durant Wins Scoring Title

durant.horse.winner.jpg

12. James Harden’s MVP caliber season will get covered up (again) by another brilliant season from his former teammate

tumblr_mebo8nitV31ryuig7o1_500.png

Yes, I’m still driving the “James Harden 2014-15 MVP” bus. Not only do I think he should’ve won, but that might have been the best chance in his career that he’ll have at winning the award.

13. Isaiah Thomas Wins 6th Man of the Year

The argument for Thomas is simple — he’s the best player on his team and comes off the bench. Now, like I said, it’s very possible Marcus Smart winds up as the best player in Boston as early as this season, but as of right now that man is Isaiah Thomas.

Thomas totally shifted the plan for Brad Stevens and company last season upon arriving in Beantown with his Superman cape tied around his neck. He brought a scoring edge that they desperately needed and helped them achieve their playoff push with 19.0 points per game. The only reason why he didn’t win the award last season is because he hadn’t spent enough time in Boston to help them raise their standings higher than the 7th seed.

*Honorable Mentions: Andre Iguodala, Tristan Thompson, Jamal Crawford (as always)*

*Dark Horse Candidates: Nikola Mirotic, Corey Brewer*

14. Toronto Finishes Below Boston in the Eastern Conference Standings

B5XSDK_CEAAytXK.jpg

I think Boston will be the breakout team of the year and not just because I’m a huge homer. They’ve got one of the best coaches in the league (Yes. And yes, coaching matters in the NBA), a young talented roster, and a great system. Last season Boston was one of the top 4 teams in the Eastern Conference once they acquired Isaiah Thomas and have only added pieces to their roster. Basketball is fun in Boston again.

15. Tim Duncan Sleeps in a Hyperbaric Chamber for 20% of the Regular Season

The only reason why this is news is because it’s important to note he can now rest more games, thanks to LaMarcus Aldridge.

Tim Duncan will wake up from his regular season nap at the age of 40 and still not believe he’s ever committed a foul.

16. Sacramento’s Team Chemistry Goes Smoother than Many Predict

usatsi_8502367-1.jpg

17. DeMarcus Cousins Proves he’s the Best Center in the League

Suns_Kings_Basketball-0868a.jpg

DeMarcus Cousins, the best offensive center in the league, will prove he can put forth the necessary defensive effort to win over the few that don’t think he’s already the best center in the game. To me, it’s crazy to say Pau Gasol, DeAndre Jordan, Dwight Howard, or whoever are better than Cousins considering he eats their lunch each time they play.

18. Sacramento Will Battle for 8th Seed

19. Andrew Wiggins becomes an All-Star

Andrew-Wiggins.jpg

20. Anthony Davis wins Defensive Player of the Year

anthony-davis-and-andrew-wiggins_20141114-e1420815765113.jpg

After leading the NBA in blocked shots a year ago, Davis came up short to Kawhi Leonard and Draymond Green last season.

Anthony Davis, already one of the best three players in the league, is looking to make another leap in his career. His brow points to him winning the award that distinguishes him as the league’s top defender.

The scary thing about Davis is that at 6’10” he can guard multiple positions anywhere on the court. He protects the rim as well as he defends the post. He’s as dominant of help-side defender as he is at rebounding. His defense is very similar to Joakim Noah’s — except better — because he has the ability to switch onto guards and defend with his insane length and athleticism. The sky is the limit for the 22-year-old. A closet mantle of MVP awards are coming, but for starters, just a DPOY.

20. New Orleans isn’t Guaranteed to Make Playoffs

16616542-mmmain.jpg

An argument could be made that Anthony Davis is the best player in the entire league, but that doesn’t mean they’re good enough to lock up a playoff spot. As good as Davis is, the Pelicans don’t have a great roster.

I do believe the Pelicans will make the playoffs, but if Sacramento, Utah (ehhh), or Minnesota (ehh) make a legit run for the 8th seed than the Pelicans will need to handle their business.

The good thing for New Orleans is if Davis is as good as everybody is saying, they’ll make the jump sooner than most are projecting. I mean, Bill Simmons thinks they could make the Conference Finals — I wouldn’t go that far — but it’s not 100% crazy to think so.

20. New Orleans isn’t Guaranteed to Make Playoffs

21. Portland Finishes One of the Five Worst Teams in the League

Portland-Trail-Blazers-2.jpg

After losing, literally, your entire supporting cast, there’s only so much that Damian Lillard can do. He’ll have career highs in everything, except wins.

22. The Miami Heat will Play in the Eastern Conference Finals

760x442-wadedragicpre-150729.jpg

First, let me say three things with this prediction — if any of these three points are invalid than this prediction is void.

1. Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh stay healthy.

2. They don’t face Cleveland until the Conference Finals.

3. Mike Bittleman isn’t betting against them.

The Heat’s roster is insane. If all goes well, they’ll make it to the ECF. Who wouldn’t want to see Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra do whatever they think is necessary to beat LeBron James? My favorite part of the whole series would be Chris Bosh doing a silent home run trot after every basket as if to say, Yeah, remember me LeBron? I was your sidekick and now I’m stunting on you in front of America! *grabs nuts, waves hand in front of face, gives James choke sign.*

Okay, that’s not going to happen, but it’d be hilarious. And to be honest, would Chris Bosh doing anything surprise you?

23. Paul George and Monta Ellis are both in the top 15 PPG
PaulGeorge.jpg

24. The Pacers are Injected with the Monta Ellis Curse

Nothing personal here, just history telling a true story.

25. Pacers will make the Playoffs

I believe Indiana will make the playoffs because a healthy Paul George is arguably a top-10 player in the entire league. He’s been amazing this offseason and looks as though he wants to prove something. It wasn’t that long ago that he was baptizing the Birdman during playoff basketball.

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what I think of the small-ball ideas that Frank Vogel has addressed. But he’s a proven, smart coach and is trying to swing the karma ship in his direction after one of the oddest franchise collapses of the last few years — another possible “what if” for Mr. Simmons.

26. Golden State and Atlanta Fall to the Three Seeds in Their Conferences

GS-WARRIORS-vs.-ATL-HAWKS.gp.jpg

Like I previously said, nothing against the Golden State Warriors, but it’s just hard to repeat that level of success in the Western Conference.

Atlanta has just lost some good players and will need to prove that their system isn’t as paper-thin as it showed in the playoffs. They were lucky to be playing in the Conference Finals.

27. The Denver Nuggets won’t Trade Kenneth Faried

121125234738-kenneth-faried-112512-dunk.1200x672.jpg

28. The Celtics will trade Jared Sullinger

jared-sullinger-nba-boston-celtics-detroit-pistons-850x560.jpg

29. Billy Donovan wins Coach of the Year
dt.common.streams.StreamServer.cls

Congratulations Billy Donovan for being offered the easiest coaching job to accept in the history of the National Basketball Association. You’re now in charge of finding talent (CHECK), winning games (give me a break), and making a playoff run (let’s do it).

Donovan isn’t just a great coach, but he’s self motivated. He’s already went back and watched film from the last to seasons that the Thunder have played in order to identify close details that are good and bad. He’s going to groom this tremendously talented team so finely that the Thunder will win a championship in his first season.

*Honorable Mentions: Steve Kerr, Gregg Popovich*

*Dark Horse Candidates: Brad Stevens, Fred Hoiberg*

The OKC players have already boasted about how much more space there is in their new offensive system and are excited for the season to start.

30. Ty Lawson Helps Bring the Rockets Back to the Conference Finals

920x920.jpg

For the first time in a while, the Houston Rockets will have a roster full of players that each know their role and have a specific responsibility. I love what Lawson can do for Houston as a high-reward risk. He can give them the necessary backcourt flexibility in a series that could send them back to the Conference Finals. And well, with James Harden anything is possible in a Conference Finals.

31. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili Could be the Spurs’ Achilles Heel

498139d370b0dbcddb442887bcbcecd7_crop_north.jpg

Last season the Spurs were favorites by many to finally repeat. I was optimistic about their chances until later in the season when I was witnessing the decline of Parker and Ginobili.

Mentally, sharp as ever, but physically they couldn’t make the plays they were used to making because their bodies simply wouldn’t allow them to. Passes were slower, legs gave out faster, and most importantly, defense was non-existent.

Maybe the most impressive thing about the Spurs last season was that Tim Duncan was as efficient as he’s ever been. He was legitimately their best player in that 7-game series against Los Angeles.

I fully believe in the San Antonio Spurs and I’ll always believe in Popovich. A core of Aldridge, Leonard, and Green sounds amazing moving forward, but I’m not entirely sure that Parker and Ginobili will have the legs to keep them in contention against some of these Western Conference powerhouses.

*Sat here thinking if I just (once again) doubted the Spurs and will remember this when Old Man Riverwalk holds up his sixth Larry O’Brien trophy.*

32. The Grit-and-Grind Grizz are in Decline

One of my favorite teams to watch on my League Pass are simply, the old guy in the room. They have their own style, their own swagger, and want to continue to play the way they’ve been accustomed to for thousands of years.

Looking back at it, if Memphis would’ve drawn anybody in the first round besides Portland, or New Orleans, they probably would’ve lost. Unfortunately for Memphis, each contender in the West started or ended the summer in a better position than they did. It’s tough to try to hold on to an advantage in a world that is totally opposite of what you want.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved on from Z-Bo and tried to get a different combination of players in an attempt to win while they have Gasol and Conley together.

33. Daryl Morey Wins Executive of the Year
morey1.jpg

This prediction is solely based on the fact that I believe Ty Lawson will boost the Rockets into the Conference Finals for the second consecutive season. I love how gutty and willing Morey is to take risks on players — Josh Smith, Corey Brewer, Jeremy Lin, Ty Lawson, Harden (as a superstar), etc. — because he’s often right.

Morey has been stacking and trading assets for the last couple of years as he’s built his current roster into one for contention — I don’t think he’s finished this season either. One more trade is up his sleeve, I’m not sure what, but it’ll increase Houston’s odds of winning for sure.

34. Kobe Bryant Plays his Last Season

kobe_bryant_wallpaper.jpg

A day that NBA fans have been dreading for the longest time — Kobe’s retirement.

Nobody wants to see him retire because he’s given us so many memories over the years. My generation grew up watching the Black Mamba and there’s nothing like it. There is nothing like him in this world and everything about the dude is awesome. To me there’s nothing to not appreciate.

As a lifelong Celtics fan, there hasn’t been a player I’ve appreciated/hated/been a fan of more than Kobe Bryant. I’ve watched him beat my team in the Finals and I’ve watch Boston take him down during his lone MVP season. He’s my favorite non-Celtic to ever pick up a basketball and I have nothing except the utmost respect for #24.

I’m waiting for his final season to become solidified to really open up how I feel about Kobe Bryant.

LeBron James, Kyrie Irving & Kevin Love Star in NBA on TNT's 'Quest' Commercial

LeBron James and fellow Cavs stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love have trekked across the desert in TNT’s latest impressive, if not a little bizarre, commercial for the forthcoming NBA season. Check out the short ad above to see the trio’s dramatic portrayal of explorers and to catch the cameo from Mike Epps.

LeBron James Is A Modern Day Moses Starring In New Commercial

Screen_Shot_2015-10-07_at_1.08.02_PM_tnjywc.png

If LeBron James is a modern day Moses, what does that make Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love?

The Cavs Big Three star in a dramatic and, some might say, epic promo called "The Quest" as the stars look to lead their supporters to the promised land and deliver Cleveland its first championship in, well, forever. Appropriately, the commercial for the NBA on TNT was filmed in a desert climate since Cleveland's title drought will soon reach 51 years because the Browns.

The spot, produced by TNT as the network gets ready to open the 2015-2016 NBA season later this month, is one of three fans should expect to see over the coming weeks. The Clippers' Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Paul Pierce, and DeAndre Jordan as well as the Rockets' James Harden and Dwight Howard have their own commercials as part of TNT's season-long campaign chronicling each team's the fictitious journey toward a championship.

You can also check out a behind-the-scenes look at the commercial.

It's almost here, NBA fans. The season starts Tuesday, Oct. 27 with a doubleheader on TNT featuring the Cavs visiting the Bulls followed by the defending champion Warriors hosting the Pelicans.

Don't know how serious he was but the bucks should be nice

Oh he was serious. He said the Hawks were pretenders and he doesn't think they are that good. They not winning 60 games this year but they will still be a top 4 team.

Finally!

Im taking Stanley Johnson for ROY,

GS/OKC for the Chip....Most Improved Marcus Smart? Boston has been balling I expect them in that top 5 in the East. I do like his defense
