"It took him to do it," Melle Mel says of Macklemore.</h3>
<div itemprop="articleBody"><p>Melle Mel says he appreciates <a href="http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.35177/title.macklemore-says-fatherhood-helped-him-come-out-of-addiction">Macklemore</a> including him and fellow Rap pioneers Grandmaster Caz and Kool Moe Dee in the video for "<a href="http://hiphopdx.com/videos/id.21042/title.macklemore-ryan-lewis-downtown">Downtown</a>," which <a href="http://hiphopdx.com/editorials/id.2993/title.macklemores-downtown-is-the-most-sellout-song-of-2015">has received criticism</a>.</p>
<p>"He’s a good dude," Melle Mel&nbsp;says to <a href="http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2015/09/melle-mel-kool-moe-dee-macklemore-hip-hop-history/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=melle-mel-kool-moe-dee-macklemore-hip-hop-history" target="_blank">XXL</a>. "He’s a real dude and he’s a friend to Hip Hop."</p>
<p>The former Sugar Hill Records emcee says that Macklemore was the only rapper to reach out to the legends.</p>
<p>"I know for a fact that <a href="http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.34271/title.j-cole-announces-dollar-a-dream-tour-iii">J. Cole</a> or Kendrick Lamar or <a href="http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.35358/title.rick-ross-details-maybach-music-groups-recent-success">Rick Ross</a> or Jay Z or any of these cats, they would not have done it, ever," <a href="http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.176/title.melle-mel-reinvents-himself">Melle Mel</a> says. "They would not have done it. It took him to do it. And all those other so-called 'real cats,' they should hang their heads because somebody should have done it by now. They could have reached back to any of us. If you’re making records and you say you’re Hip Hop, you’re supposed to have a connection to what Hip Hop really is. And nobody made that connection until Macklemore made the connection. And I’ve had this conversation quite a few times since everything happened and had that little controversy of, yeah, the White boy, using the OGs, or blah blah blah. And like I said, none of those other guys would have ever done it. And it’s a shame that that’s the reality of what the game is right now."</p>
<p><a href="http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.35368/title.kool-moe-dee-explains-on-macklemore-ryan-lewis-downtown">Last week, Kool Moe Dee detailed the collaboration to HipHopDX</a>&nbsp;and said that Macklemore reached out to Big Daddy Kane to get the rappers together. Kool Moe Dee said Macklemore anticipated the backlash for the track.</p>
<p>"I think it was just a masterful, smart kind of move,” Kool Moe Dee&nbsp;says. "He knew he was going to get some kind of flack from it. In his mind, there’s always going to be haters no matter what. There will be a segment of the population that will just be happy to just see us and say that was a good look and a good move. Then there would be people that would even look at us as sell-outs or him as reaching. They’re going to put their spin on it. What they do. He was very, very cognizant of what was happening. Once we had that conversation, I’m like, 'I’m with it.' We talked for two hours before they even played the beat. That’s how serious they are about making sure that we knew what we were talking about or what we were doing."

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Context of racism/white supremacy!

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Good read. This just exposes the fact that blacks need to be better curators of their art. Whites seem to appreciate all black classics across many genres of black made music more than blacks.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

None of the people he named needs him. White boy does

yeah this is actually a calculated move by the cac, it's a smart move, im sure Kendrick and cole know and respect the old school but they don't need them, and i dint get why he mention jayz, jay was rapping in the same era they were rapping in, why mel trying to act like he a new nigga

Let's keep it 100 though. Macklemore doesn't really need them either.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Why reach out when they NEED the old heads? Why not reach out because they ARE the old heads? That's the problem. EVERYONE in hip-hop could be making money, the old school and the new school but these new school cats are on some "It's all about me" shit and it's not helpful because one day they will be the old school cats too.

i'll rephrase , he using them for credibility, kendrick and cole don't need that

its not about needing the old school cats its about respecting and acknowledging the forefathers of the music and culture. Thats how you preserve a culture. Todays cats should be referenceing and giving shine to the old school...its not like it would cost them anything to do it.

The attitudes you guys express is EXACTLY why rap music and the culture is in the state its in:smh::smh::smh::smh:

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Big Daddy Kane said the same thing on instagram a few days ago.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Does he not get that he was used as a "cosigner" to macklemore's "street creed"?

maybe if young black rappers where asking him to show up for them he'd have been too busy to fuck with the white boy...

you still don't get it:smh::smh::smh:

i get it , i jus think kendrick and cole were the wrong examples to use, hell kendrick had old ass mc eight on his first album, he was paying homage to a old school compton rapper, im sure as young as kendrick is his hip hop history knowdledge is great

It is about needing them. J. Cole bring out kool moe d in a show 97% of the people there ain't go know who he is. All the people he named don't need a cosigner. The white boy does. You think the white boy did this to "pay respect" to the old school?

He and some others round here seem not to understand that

man why niggaz being so technical, im not saying jay was rapping when kool moe dee and bizzy bee first came out, im saying jay is a old head, Hawaiian shopie was in the late 80's, im 100% sure jay knows every single old school rapper, i jus don't get why mel grouped him in wit kendrick and cole

damn you must be young...
Jay started in 89 or 90 - and that's being generous... to old heads Jay was new school
All the OGs in the video were doing live shows and rocking parties in the 70s, when america thought hiphop had something do with Peter Cottontail

All the OGs careers were dead by then... Kool Moe Dee maybe but even he was circling the drain after LL dropped Break of Dawn
J is 2 or 3 eras removed from them
Party MCs and BBoys to Rakim to ...

when i said era i didn't mean he was rapping wit them literally, i meant jay was listening to them amd was right behind them, he's of that era, mel dropped his name cause jay still popular, no need to group him wit lil niggaz like cole

I think the two things are mutually exclusive.

Of course the architects need to be respected, supported and incorporated into projects by the new generations that prospered from their efforts, but lets not forget Iggy Azalea. I'm sure that Mack peeped what happened to her and figured he'd better cover his ass because he knew he would keep receiving scrutiny. My very first thoughts a week ago and few seconds into hearing that song on iTunes was that Mack was covering his ass. Theres lots of "ass covering" in the music industry (no homo).

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

White people using black people to increase their finances. Same old story been told dozens of times.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

He and some others round here seem not to understand that

Just from my POV that was my very first impression, but ultimately thats just my strong opinion.

why would Macklemore need Melle Mel, Caz, and Kool Moe Dee for 'street cred'? Most of these young cats aren't familiar with hiphop legends. if he was searching for 'street cred' then why not get Meek Mills, Ross, etc...

You know what I mean bro, not "street" street cred, but respect in gerneral from the underground or purist hip hop community. Ironically I was thinking more on an international level more than domestic. International "hip hop" fans are incredibly discerning and snobbish. France, Japan and Switzerland is a prime example. Respect = Longevity for rappers.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

I think Mel missed his mark with this one. Personally when i hear KDot and Cole, i can hear they were students of what came before them. Jay, has rep'd fair enough for me. "Im overcharging ni99as for what they did to cold crush!" Biz Mark and Slick Rick in the girls video. Mel just felt good to get some mainstream shine, and went alittle to far.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

I do this for my culture
To let 'em know what a nigga look like...when a nigga in a roaster
Show 'em how to move in a room full 'o vultures
Industry shady it need to be taken over
Label owners hate me I'm raisin' the status quo up
I'm overchargin' niggaz for what they did to the Cold Crush
Pay us like you owe us for all the years that you hold us
We can talk, but money talks so talk mo' bucks

hmmm.........

wtf are you talking about? Macklemore doesn't need shit - he is guaranteed and locked in his fanbase in the alt edm hipster circles - he doesn't need mainstream or pop...

Macklmore was locked in with the international long before we heard him
He is hiphop more like the Beastie Boys were... not like 3rd Base was

again..thats how you educate the youth about the HISTORY of the music and culture they enjoy.. its how you know where you come from. its how you understand who and how the culture was created so when fakers and posers come up you KNOW what the deal is and can't be given the okaydoke...

this is why black americans as a people are a LOST people...becuase we had our history ripped from us and make no real attempt to know the truth so we accept whatever bullshit is put in front of us and reject the past..and we're so accustomed to rejecting the past that we do it with our art...thats why you don't see many blacks at blues and jazz concerts thats why there was NEVER an appreciation show for people like BB KING and DIZZY GILLESPIE or even MILE DAVIS in their lifetime by their own people..:smh::smh::smh: and STILL isn't.

that fact you see as a thing of NEEDING and DOLLARS AND CENTS and some kind of HOW RELEVANT YOU ARE and WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR ME TODAY..sadly illustrates that mindset of our people:smh::smh:

yes macklemore was USING him...but thats what you have to expect for a cac.. his OWN people FORGOT him and that hurts more than anything.

They understand it too. It doesn't take a genius to see it. Even kool moo dee. Said it. Doesn't mean that their point isn't valid
