They won't do it. It's the same complaint Entourage fans had and they ran for 8 seasons at 30 min episodes.
One hour shows double the writers workload and most importantly, removes the exclusivity in one shot.
It's that 30 min time slot that keep us hooked like crack fiends.
read the review..KINDA agree with one point..Ballers would probably be better served as a drama with some light moments rather than a comedy with some serious moments.I'm sure Dwayne Johnson and Denzel jr could handle the weight of a drama. And I get the feeling thats what Dwayne wants to do to shore up his acting bona fides.
The problem with that tho is that its clear that the mandate of the show is that its like the Entourage of the sports world. And outside of Ari's rants and serious moments that show was as lightweight as you could get..
Also keeping the show lighthearted for the most part makes it easier to keep the issues and problems about the players..serious drama would invite more serious subject matter like drug use, spouse abuse, etc and thats harder to contain to just the player as coaches, the front office and the league itself would have a hand in that stuff and thats where Playmakers ran afoul with the NFL and ended up getting canceled.
5 episodes in and the story is moving slow as fuck. The shit is like a DBZ episode.

The curse of the show is everyone wants to compare it to entourage, and I can certainly see why, but you have no clue whats building and to say otherwise is simply unfair. Rob Cordry is there for comedic effect/goofy white boy and doing a bang up job but they're clearly building up to the trauma of Spence killing that cat on the field, the health issues football players face during life after football (the guy pops percs like skittles) and the drama fat boy is going through trying to adjust to the slow life and his marriage.
Not to mention it's a new show and ALL of these characters are still being developed bruh

Remember, Vernon doesn't have any money right now, this ALL Reggie trying to squeeze $$$ out of Spence, He's lived the good life off Vernon's back and is feeling the pinch, if it really was the chick 50k is a good come up, it just isn't enough of a come up for Reggie!
