I'm still dealing with stuff on page two, but I happened to see your question after I posted, so let me hook you up with an answer:
The Sun travels on a certain latitude which if I remember correctly is just south of what you would normally call the equator. So the North doesn't get the strength of sunlight that the south would get...
As far as <strike>the poles </strike> Arctic & Antarctica receiving 24 hr sun or darkness, I know the answer is out there regarding Flat Earth theory, but honestly I didn't pay attention because I was so blown by the whole discovery.
