The Americans: The 2nd best espionage/spy show on TV

I have to say Paige is secretly becoming the most interesting character on the show -

its funny how much she like her parents.

dedicated/committed to a fault like her mom
sneaky like mom and dad (snuck up on her dad while she was talking bout her)
very observant (knows something is wrong with her parents, willing to call them on it)
thinking 2 steps ahead...she played them at that dinner

maybe elizabeth is right and she would be a great spy but who the fuck wants that lifestyle for their child?

and how soon before Marthas uses that gun on Phil or vice versa

I always wandered how Philip could get it up for Martha - pre Viagra days - but they showed that his training process was extensive and downright disgusting - all types of women young, old and even "ugly" and then to make it clear that he had to fuck every one - they threw in a fat guy - trade craft :smh:

I have to say that detailed description made me rethink...

I was so turned off by her early on especially after that hitchhiking episode.

But yeah...she is becoming JUST like her mom.

and she is becoming one hell of an actress too.

the funny thing is that if Phillip and Elizabeth wants Paige to not be involved in the church anymore they need to show her that the Pastor Tim has clay feet. Set up a "honey trap" where Paige walks in on him fucking some young girl - she is an idealist and that would shatter her ideals about the church and Pastor Tim.

Then she would be perfectly poised to be turned - though I think Phillip's memories of his training is something he doesn't want for his daughter.

Didn't know you guys watched this. Elizabeth is awesome. This shit is compelling. Richard is my favorite though, no doubt.

Philip's character is designed to be a human being. I think if he wanted to really fuck this shit up for that girl he'd have done so already. Fucking Elizabeth is a machine. She's an idealist too. But i love how they've always shown that. Philip seems like the type that he's just really good at his job. Naturally. But it's not his core. Elizabeth on the other hand had to work hard at herself. She's had to earn her shit. Where stuff comes very easy to Philip. Which is why i think she's such a staunch believer.

great point

We have had many memories of their development into spies and there was never a point where you would believe they would do it again or initiate their kids.

Notice that Elizabeth's training was to be raped by a man she had learned to trust...and Philip was completely broken and desensitized emotionally.

And Elizabeth learned to genuinely trust and love Philip and Philip is devoted to his wife and finally going AGAINST his country to defend his children.

I wouldn't be surprised that the twist is that their SON is the one who we find out is the REAL one who has the skills to be a spy.

Think about it he is completely unassuming people forget he is in the room and everyone underestimates him.

But if you go back notice he knows EVERYTHING going on especially with Paige.

This is one my favorite shows on TV.

Its one of those shows that if you meet someone who is a real fan you know you are going to be friends.

I dont even have a favorite character because each and every lead is so well acted and scripted I am gripped by all their storylines.

When you think Philip is weakening and may possible turn he has a moment of such cold hard dedication to Russia its chilling (although I think his devotion to his WIFE is greater then she even knows) same goes for Elizabeth just when you think she is the Terminator? She has a moment of extreme weakness and real human emotion.

It that constant push and pull that conflict that drives the show.

Even the final scene when Philip tells the truth closes his eyes and kisses her notice Elizabeth is still wide eyed and displaced but then finally succumbs.

Phillip will see eventually that his daughter was built for the spy game just like her parents. It's funny as he's using Kimberly to get close to the CIA guy he sees his daughter in her and is caught between doing his job and the feelings he has for Paige.

They need to get rid of the pastor and the only way to do it is to bring her into the fold.

Incredibly complex season going on right now with lots moving parts working together for one end game.

The way Elizabeth pushed her sponsor out of the house she was in and into the house close to the plant as naturally as possible is nothing short of precision and genius. Then planting the seed of getting money for information, mentioning it in passing was well done. I know this is what they do but still needs to be recognized for it's excellence.

Can't wait to see what happens next.

one of the best shows nobody is watching.

they have done over a few seasons that big budget films haven't been able to do in 2.5 hours.

Paige has went from an annoyance to a fascinating character that I am completely unable to predict.

The parallels are incredible...

Paige's parents division over having her join in their mission

Philip hating to have to seduce the young girl

(Nina's road to redemption could actually have been a series all on its own but seeing her as a future Paige too, showing the was from a different angle)

The embassy agent's father wanting to bring him home

Elizabeth asking for Mischa to be brought home (is this a play to get Philip to side with her on Paige's future?)

I cannot believe Philip was able to talk his way out of THAT one he actually look GUILTY and felt bad for her.

looks like the FBI director is making himself look MORE guilty every day.

ummmm why was that South African kid spying on Paige and Elizabeth?
And Elizabeth didn't say anything?

This what I don't understand, Martha knew the pen was bugged, and she planted other bugs for him. So, why the hell was she all "they found the pen. Who are you?" As if it was some big revelation?

OK that got me too.

I am going on this...

the interviewer Taffet is essentially from the SAME over sight department that Philip claimed he worked for. PHILIP claimed he is in charge of investigating Martha's dept.

So they would KNOW about the pen being discovered.

ESPECIALLY since they are the ones who told Martha to plant it there in the first place.

Since Philip doesn't know...he couldn't be working for them.

I THINK Philip is going to claim its all part of an even LARGER investigation and they need to put on this show to protect loyal agents like her from being exposed.

Yep. This.

Oh. When she said "he's you." I thought Phillip had stolen the guy's identity and she met the real him.

Initially me too...

until I saw his reaction and I realized he DID steal his identity just not his name.

But his title.

And the damn government is so big it would be very possible.

And UNLESS she was actually caught he would NEVER be exposed.

And it looks like its the brother who is being the most scrutinized, Stan was like forget this I got a memorial to go to and they aint even sweating him

And don;t forget Stan doesn't like the new guy either.

They actually mistrust MORE because the brother is the one who FOUND it...which for them makes him even MORE suspicious in their minds.

Yea his title. Everything to this point she thought was basically one agency spying on the other agency but on the same side.

the questioning finding the bug plus dude mentioning the KGB as a potential culprit shook her up.

Yes of course they think its the brother from Oakland

its all about the way they portray the parallels is what I love.

This loyal brother been involved since HIGH SCHOOL being treated like an outsider and look how the Russians treat Black men like comrades?

The brother is essentially being punished for being smart.

Too smart.

I didn't know we had an "The Americans" thread. This hands been one of my favorite shows for years and it gets Zero love during the Emmys.

When the investigator said "others had a much easier path." He looked at him like " I know, those crackas got the job just by walking through the door. I actually had to work for this shit."

When the interviewer took a sip of coffee and said "strong " he wasn't taliking about the coffee.

Got your girl Nina whoring herself out again. This scientist is gonna be the what, the fourth dude she's been with?

But I think its a good storyline because they showed you earlier how Elizabeth got raped by the man she trusted most and how Philip had to sex Everything...and this is the life they want for Paige?

And to see Nina go through it now...

remember the head of the embassy even made her blow him the day he found out she was snitching...he didn't even have to speak. so you can only IMAGINE what her life has been like.

Sex is a weapon and commodity.

Remember Elizabeth and Philip's early love scenes were cold distant and mechanical.

She is almost a sexual assassin. Even the man she betrayed and would never forgive her you could see STILL has feelings for her (and 2 men in the states)

So I don't even want to totally label her a victim because ALL THOSE MEN are still emotionally invested.

Philip blew it when he didn't know who Walter Taffet was when he supposedly works in the same department as Phillip er uh Clark-

Philip tried to "Goldie" her -

But I dont think Martha is buying it anymore

Martha is going to end up in a suitcase -

At this point, I don't see what he has to gain by staying with her.

They can't kill her
she's still a valuable asset
killing her is going to raise even more suspicion
better to have it redirected to another agent and have her transfer or quit the bureau.
Stan is so obsessive he would never let her death go.
you could get rid of her later but not right now
watch they blame that Russian defector chick that Stan suspects.

in a suprising way this show has been the best depiction of black males i can recall seeing in quite sometime.

you had Gregory in season 1. who was down for the cause, respected Elizabeth decision to work things out with Phil and died on his own terms.

you have the new fed agent that seems to be very component, knows he is being singled out and still damn good at his job. He found the bug

you have homie from south africa who recognizes the strain the war has caused on his family, respect his comrades but aint to be fucked with when it comes to get revenege.

i fucking love this show but until last night didnt realize how much bang for their buck they got out of the few black characters. Especially loved the intergoation involving the black fed. Even though HE THE ONE THAT FOUND THE BUG, he still gotta deal with that BULLSHIT

I think her value as an asset disappeared when the bug went missing and now she knows that Clark/Phillip is not FBI, I don't think she will be willing to "spy" for him. when she thought she was helping to police the Bureau she was ok with it, even if Clark says he is from Justice or even the CIA she will be less agreeable to help.

Plus she could wake up tomorrow and say this guy Clark told me he worked for the Bureau in your division and asked me to stick a bug in Gadd's office -

she is not a reliable "asset" anymore and a HUGE potential liability.

The Americans renewed for season 4

:yes::yes::yes::yes:

USA! USA!

FX has renewed The Americans for a fourth season. The Cold War thriller will get another 13 episodes next year, EW has learned.

FX is enthusiastic about the show’s critical acclaim, noting The Americans currently has the top spot on critic aggregation site Metacritic, with a 92 out of 100 average (including EW’s review).

“Remarkably, this season of The Americans has achieved even greater acclaim than that of its first two seasons,” said Nick Grad, programming president at FX.

“The series has cemented it status with critics as television’s best current drama and arguably the best show on TV, and we couldn’t agree more.”

Ratings are another matter. The show has continued to struggle to find a big audience.

Last week’s episode had only about 1 million viewers and a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49 in the overnight returns, ranking below repeats on other basic cable networks of King of the Hill and Full House.

:smh:

Yet FX points out that after you add in repeats, DVR playback and video on demand, the show improves to 4.2 million weekly viewers.

Even with the 4th season upcoming, how long can FX really stomach the low ratings? They better plan on wrapping the series up just in case the 4th season turns into the last season.
