The role now belongs to Mike Epps, in a project that will be directed by Lee Daniels, with Oprah Winfrey also attached to play Richard Pryor's grandmother. But, at one time, Marlon Wayans was to play Pryor in a film that Chris Rock was on-board to produce; this was in 2010, when Rock shared his enthusiasm for the project, and just how blown away he was by Marlons' audition tape.

Might this be footage from the tape that Rock and company watched, that blew them away?

Thanks to reader "Dave," here's footage from Wayans' Richard Pryor audition tape, made with the contributions of Omar Epps.

But the role now belongs to Mike Epps, so, no matter what you think of Wayans' attempt in the tape below, it ultimately doesn't matter.

Director Lee Daniels really has not spoken publicly much about the project; although he did say that, much like Chris Rock said he was blown away by Marlon Wayans' audition, Daniels, and his producers, The Weinstein Company, were just as taken by Epps' performance.

Others who were said to be in contention for the job, when it became Daniels', include Nick Cannon and Michael B. Jordan.

Also, Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway were said to both be in the running to play Jennifer Lee Pryor in the film; although it looks like it's Hudson's role.

I should note that Mike Epps actually plays Richard Pryor in Cynthia Mort's Nina Simone film that Zoe Saldana stars in, which still hasn't been released.

Good performance. Not surprised though. Marlon has shown he can do dramatic roles. That being said, i didnt see or hear Richard at all in that performance.

Not bad, but man I know Pryor has some demons, but I just don't see the entertainment value of Daniels always wanting to create so called art in the dark spaces of humanity.

If this is the direction of the movie not sure Epps can dig down like that, without taking drugs to alter his own mental

The Stand Up Part Could Use a LiL Tweaking...But That Therapy Session Wit Omar Epps Had Me Engaged As Hell....Unless Mike Epps Is Showing Up to the Set Possessed By Richard......Marlon Should Have Got This Part

Hmmm,he didn't channel Richard at all.He tried to do him even down to his mannerisms but the problem was is that it was Marlon trying to play Richard and not,how should I say natural.

That mustache looked like it was going to peel right off and fall.

most auditions usually look bootleg as far as makeup/outfits is concern.. once he got the part they would've movie magic his ass and made him look like pryor..prob tweek the audio to so his voice could sound more like pryor

I liked it ... but the problem with both of them is going to be the fact that we know them so well we cannot accept them being pryor ...that what makes what jamie foxx did so special I did not see jamie @ at in ray ...I did not see Denzel at all in Malcom

And very little Idris in Mandela

I wonder who they gon' have playing Redd Foxx & Eddie Murphy (can play himself, I know)

most of us knew from requiem from a dream that marlon could act.. hell he better sometimes at serious acting than his comedy roles

Already knew Marlon has acting chops if anyone sleeping on dude's skills.

The acting on this was fantastic. As far as getting Rich down pat no this didn't quite match Denzel's or Jamie's performance. Good stuff tho. If Epps can top this I gotta give dude props. That was still a great performance.

Marlon doesn't have enough pain in his life to channel Richard... Epps had a much rougher life.

Keenan and Marlon were ballin when Marlon was a youngster..

Marlon was ok but I saw "Marlon Wayans" not "Richard Pryor" in his acting.

^^^^ C/S

they probally can get dude off snl to do eddie for cheap ...i can actually see jamie foxx playing redd foxx

That was impressive....moreso the therapy scene. i few times I looked away and it sounded just like Richard.

This role aside, this audition tape should get the brother some serious work. And it just raised the bar for Mike Epps.

talking about channeling pain... mike hasn't ever shown he can act period. if he pulls it off he might need an award. the only thing here was the voice wasn't all the way there as far as make up with the budget it will get where it needs to be

Bro, this is nonsense. Actors act. Shitty life experience has NEVER been a prerequisite for quality chops. And Epps so called rough life sure hasnt translated into comedic talents or success.

Conveying emotions often require experience ...most actors use personal trauma to "act" in intense scenes. An actors frame of reference is pivotal.

Epps has not shown himself to be a thespian, yet he must have captured Pryor's issues, addiction and mania better.

The ability to utilize your personal experience often separates performances

SHIT!!

that boy got some serious acting chops

his "richard" wasn't quite there but god damn Marlon can act

best in that family by a country mile

if Mike epps is better than that then i don't know what to say.

they never should have let this tape get out

not necessarily that he did better to capture that but maybe the stand up scene was stronger, there are other factors like friendships and business dealings. I won't believe it until I see it.
