You couldn't refer to him as that brother? I doubt if a person you described him as would walk two blocks to work.:(

Changed it :D

Re: Detroit man walks 21 miles to work everyday! Hasn't missed a day of work in 10 ye

Theres always a thread that exposes the idiocy & lousiness of some BGOL Members. Some of your Mothers shouldve killed u after you were born...and then killed herself for making the decision to give birth you.

But yea.....
I know for a fact that the cost of living has been rough for a lot of mofos over the last 13+ years....so i dont think anyone in this thread can comment about his finance's...and what he should be doing 10 years later.

Whereas I may wonder why certain people "settle" and lose the strength to fight for certain things, I still cant fully fault them because I understand that what may have been easy for me may not be easy for the next Man; for whateva reason.

Props to that Man for doing what he needed to do to survive....

Re: Detroit man walks 21 miles to work everyday! Hasn't missed a day of work in 10 ye

This shit ain't inspirational.

Props to homie for the commitment...

...but, this is more sad than anything. That much fire in his belly, and he uses it to be a wage slave?

Shit, if you're going to grind that fucking hard, at least be compensated handsomely.

Man, we as black people identify so much with struggle that we want to applaud niggas who struggle the best.

FOH.

There is nothing positive to be taken from this shit, other than it does seem humans will have pity on you if you work hard, but have no desire for upward mobility.

Anyone can hit a rough patch in life...

...but this niggas entire life seems to be a grind, and he got hellified discipline and drive.

Thanks Bruh. I think every town has a person like this. In my home town his name is Mr. "Moe". He's autistic and was just glad to have a job earning his own money. Maybe this guy have a learning disability, or maybe he feels like his independence comes from not having someone do things for him. The cool thing is that he's not hanging out, saggin, and smoking weed waiting to rob someone.

If thats the case, then I take back everything I said.

I just have an personal issue with this shit. I grew up with people applauding people for doing the bare minimum or normal shit, and discouraging people for trying to do something out of the ordinary.

I wouldn't say its hate in most cases, but its like motherfuckers get petrified if you want to do something to come up majorly.

I really tried to stress that in a few of my cousins a few years ago, prior to enrolling in college. I can't control their lives, but I told them that college CAN be a waste. Its about what you're going for, and how well you do while you're in there.

Gettin' a 2.5gpa in a bullshit major ain't about nothing.

I want to see my people come up. That is a real passion for me. But, its like, a lot of the discussions I've had, and a lot that I hear, it makes me think we've been conditioned to just accept any damn thing. I know everybody can't be on some boss shit...

...but no one can convince me - especially if we worked together - we could be operating on a much higher level.

Once again, I can respect that kind of commitment and discipline, but that kind of commitment and discipline should have definitely been used for something greater than walking to walk every day for ten years. He's shown the capacity to go EXTREMELY HARD for crumbs...

...why not go extremely hard for a whole slice of the pie?

Re: Detroit man walks 21 miles to work everyday! Hasn't missed a day of work in 10 ye

:lol::lol:

Some of these comments are hilarious. Leave it to BGOL to find a way to clown this dude.

Yes the man could most definitely work smarter than walking 21 miles to work for 10 years. The discipline and commitment and work ethic is to be applauded in 2015 in a city filled with poverty and unemployment like Detroit.

Does this sound like a story from the Depression Era of the 1930s? Absolutely. But this man is a hardworking dedicated employee loyal to his employer for life probably. The man's work ethic is absolutely astounding especially in modern day America. This isn't considered a third world country but this man's dedication and work ethic is similar to those of citizens in lands steeped deep off in poverty that work like this everyday all their lives for peanuts.

The story is amazing and even inspiring just off work ethic and dedication alone not brilliance education investment savvy entrepreneurialism or resourcefulness. That's why it's gone viral. People in the US in 2015 are not accustomed to hearing about this level of dedication.

I'm glad the man finally has a ride to work now after ten years.

Re: Detroit man walks 21 miles to work everyday! Hasn't missed a day of work in 10 ye

I don't know what to say about this dude. On one hand, respect for having the resolve to walk that far to work everyday but on the other hand I feel he dumb as hell for not moving up or getting another job or a closer job if you gotta walk. There has to be another $10/hr job closer than that. Thats ridiculous.

that's what I'm thinking walking all them years?

work SMARTER not HARDER

he ain't my hero.. he is nothing i aspire to be:lol:

Took the words off my keyboard. By a certain age, you have to learn how to stop working hard and how to start working smart. I commend people who take the initiative to better themselves. Not hating on the brother but I prefer stories where my brothers come from the bottom, not staying there.

Being a hard worker when you're old is nothing to aspire to. But hey, that's the message that is fed to black people all the time.

Re: Detroit man walks 21 miles to work everyday! Hasn't missed a day of work in 10 ye

Damn. Some of you cats made some valid points. However, I say this to you. Never down a man until you walked in his shoes. He could be autistic, he could be under educated, he could have did a bid? Whatever his situation, don't down him. We all have a cross to bear. And, I didn't reference that shit because of religion. Frankly, everybody has to deal with some type of shit while we are here. Could be that he walked those 10 years just for that article to be written about him, and his struggle will inspire others to be more human, more understanding of the struggles of a fellow human being that is traveling on this plane. So, lift that man up as you would do yourselves. Be thankful that GOD has blessed you to have the mind and ability to do better than what he has done. Because brothers, most of us are only a paycheck, a bad motor, a jacked up alternator away for being where he is. However, it might not be 10 years in the bardos, but a good few weeks can be that same for us.

I'm not walking 21 miles

Re: Detroit man walks 21 miles to work everyday! Hasn't missed a day of work in 10 ye

Sorry, but fuck that. Dude's an inspirational dumbass.

He's literally been walking in circles for a decade.

Nothing inspirational about this.

This shit ain't inspirational.

Props to homie for the commitment...

Boom. Let's keep it real, when the media want to praise black folk, it's either due to us turning the other cheek or being hard "labourers". That always tends to be the narrative. When's the last time they praised us for fighting back or pimping the system?

When white people do, they get movies and tv shows made about them (Breaking Bad, Wolf of Wall Street, Godfather)

When black people do, we are criminals, thugs and made examples of.

Man, fuck this story.

Re: Detroit man walks 21 miles to work everyday! Hasn't missed a day of work in 10 ye

Reminds me of that Jon Voight speech in this scene from one of my favorite movies "Runaway Train".

It takes James Robertson eight hours to make the 46-mile commute to and from work. He walks 21 of those miles every day.

Robertson, 56, is an injection molder at Schain Mold & Engineering, a plastic-parts manufacturer located in Rochester Hills, Michigan. He lives in Detroit, and for the last decade, after his 1988 Honda Accord quit on him, he has had to rely on limited public transportation, occasional rides from others and his own two feet to make the daily trek, the Detroit Free Press reported. He is unable to afford the cost of buying and maintaining a car earning just $10.55 an hour, and he hasn't moved closer to work because his girlfriend inherited the house where they live.

Robertson leaves around 8 a.m. to arrive at work ahead of his 2 p.m. shift, which ends at 10 p.m. He catches the last bus toward Detroit at 1 a.m. and doesn't get home until 4 a.m., the outlet reports. He says a prayer that he arrives home safe each night, walking through the dangerous area along 8 Mile. Despite all this, he still manages to have a pristine attendance record and doesn't complain.

"I can't imagine not working," he said.

After the Detroit Free Press published Robertson's story, thousands responded on Facebook, asking how they could help. Evan Leedy, a student at Detroit's Wayne State University, decided to set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for Robertson to buy a car.

Leedy told The Huffington Post in a phone call Monday he was inspired by Humans of New York photographer Brandon Stanton, who raised more than $1 million to send schoolkids from a crime-stricken neighborhood in Brooklyn on a trip to Harvard.

Initially, Leedy said, he didn't even think anyone would donate. So he set the goal at a modest $5,000. In just one day, however, donations soared to nearly $50,000.

"This is obviously more than just a car now," he told HuffPost. "It can turn into something way bigger than that. Maybe he could use this money to move out and move somewhere else ... We've had a Chevy dealership as well as Honda corporate [reach out]. Both want to donate a car to him. So he can use this money for whatever else he needs."

Of course him walking that far, and not missing a day ain't normal, that's why its a story.

You shouldn't have even needed to ask that shit.

I'm talking about what the fuck he's doing when he gets to work.

It'd be like if someone wrote a story about someone working as a cashier at a convenience store for 65 years. Its remarkable only because of the length of time...

...but don't try to spin that shit as inspirational.

That shit doesn't inspire me one bit.

Sampson is right, too ....

...they always want to highlight us when we're doing some worker bee shit like this.

Its symptomatic of how they see us as people.

Down deep, they think a motherfucker whose willing to do ALL OF THAT, for crumbs would have made a great, compliant ass slave.

I refuse to sit here and even pretend this is anything but sad...

...UNLESS dude is mentally challenged. I hate to say it, but this does kind of wreak of 'retard determination'. Motherfuckers got all kinds of willpower for some simple ass shit, simply because they lack the capacity to know any better.

People wouldn't provide a car to a nigga who high six figures a year, but lost everything in a series of unfortunate events.

I've seen it a no. of times. They feel like someone has had a 'taste of the grace', so fuck 'em.

They are donating a car this man 'cause they feel sorry for this nigga. How can someone people pity be inspirational?

Would you pay a compliment to a motherfucker that's arrogant?

If so, definitely not as quick as someone who needs a serious self-esteem boost.

this shit should inspire people to find a way to make bread on their own..all this dedication to making somebody else rich and they didn't give him shit in return..no raise, no car, no giving him a free ride nothing..it was outsiders feeling sorry that saved his ass or willing to help him out not his job..if this story never comes out he'd still be walking until the day he died or the job no longer felt he was needed..than they would replace him with somebody else with zero fucks given bout this old cat dedication to making them rich.. stories like this make me say fuck 9-5 jobs, work smarter not harder, put energy into urself and build ur own fucking wealth instead of making somebody else richer while u recieve crumbs and zero rides

Man, we need to stop with this shit, man.

Money is a necessity in this society.

This shit is damn near like oxygen.

It has shit to do with happiness.

Pissing don't make me happy. But, I have to do it.

I grew up hearing people talking about 'Money ain't everything!" Taking joy in people who had money having other problems...

...but they complained non-stopped, and the shit they complained about stemmed DIRECTLY from lack of money.

I know what this world run off of. I used to buy into that shit, too.

I don't want to hear no bullshit ass sayings, trying to make people feel better about lacking financial resources.

I don't need money to make me happy. I need to be able to take care of me and mine, and have something to leave behind.

Would you rather be miserable and broke, or miserable and well off?

No one would prefer to be broke over having money, so why act like its not significant??

I've noticed people who have gone through life without resources, have adopted beliefs that help them cope ... yet the reality is, there is no one who wouldn't prefer to have more resources. Its not even about wanting things. You need to be financially stable even if material shit don't mean anything to you. Shit happens, and the world is a cold fucking place for broke people.

we were making a point that the media likes to highlight the loyal black worker..the dedicated negro.. they tend not to show black entrepreneurs cause they don't want nigs to get any idea's of seperating themselves from the worker bee into a independant bee..they want to get in ur head that the only way to make money is by some job hand out aka paycheck and not fig out how to generate ur own source of income..this is def not a mistake and def part of the media trickery.. i always said in general they don't want nigs to have money and by carefully putting out subliminals of the dedicated clock puncher negro to the masses that ur skillset is limited and can only be used under somebody else company

I just wrote a policy for 2000 Volvo S80 in MI for a family member...it costs 1558.00 for just liability for a six month policy. JUST LIABILITY. Insurance is ridiculous in MI.

shows everything that is wrong with that city
works for 23 years only earn 10$ an hour
no good public transport

too under educated or too stupid to go for a better paying job

loyalty my ass, i bet they wouldn't hesitate to dump him if the economy tanked again
As harsh as this sounds, I agree with you. It is utterly stupid of him to put himself in this position.
