Sunset Overdrive reviews

Sunset Overdrive is contagiously enthusiastic

As a collection of mechanics and ideas, Sunset Overdrive is an impressive evolution of things Insomniac has been doing for a long time. Every part of Sunset Overdrive hooks into every other part somehow, and often in multiple ways, and it makes the whole shooting, grinding, wall-running package better for it. But the best thing about Sunset Overdrive is how it's unabashedly enthusiastic about what it is, in just about every way. That enthusiasm, and the freedom behind it, is contagious.

Sunset Overdrive is big, gorgeous, and a hell of a lot of fun. Never has getting from point A to point B in an open-world game provided so much enjoyment. It provides some of the most fun, frantic, and fantastic gaming I've had on the Xbox One. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to once-again adorn my wolf mask, leap off the highest ledge I can find, and fire an explosive stuffed animal at that group of angry robots.

Sunset Overdrive sets out to create a world where the apocalypse is fun instead of depressing, and that means putting control in the player's hands. Developer Insomniac has given players a sandbox to play in, toys to play with, a treasure chest full of costumes and jokes that lampoon and acknowledge how absurd the whole thing is.

Each of the game's systems feeds into another, making the experience feel complete and purposeful. More importantly, it gives players a plethora of choices in how they look, what weapon they use and how they play, and then makes every single possible combination feel vindicated. Nothing goes to waste in the awesome-pocalypse, and everyone's invited to Sunset City's after-party.

If you wanted to be uncharitable, you could voice the suspicion that a great many baseball caps were turned backwards in the echoing board room where this project was greenlit, but with the campaign done and the city freshly filled with challenges, I don't really feel like being uncharitable. Beneath the glorious tech, and once the writing relaxes a little, Sunset Overdrive's wonderfully lurid and heartfelt - a bit like playing an old 4AD album sleeve. If you get that reference, you'll probably get this, too.

It's an interesting wrinkle that stops players from just picking the maps they love over and over, and on the whole Chaos Squad is comfortably more enjoyable than single-player. It's not perfect: there aren't enough stages, some of the levels (such as the wrecking ball mission) aren't great, and sometimes it's tough to discern what is actually happening, given the amount of nonsense on screen (of which it must be said that the engine holds up phenomenally well). But I enjoyed the hours I spent playing it much more than the considerably longer time I had with the campaign.

escapistmagazine - 4/5

Bottom Line: While its commitment to madness can be maddening itself, Sunset Overdrive is an energetic, fun-focused adventure. The jokes don't always hit home, but this is a game that loves being a game, and you can't hate that sort of honesty.

Recommendation: Would you like to play Lady Gaga in videogame form? This is about as close as you're getting.

Outside of the mission monotony, Sunset Overdrive is an immensely rewarding experience that has a look and style all its own and a great gameplay package to complement it. It’s a colorful return to form for Insomniac games, and a hell of an exclusive for Xbox One.

  • Traversing through Sunset City is a blast
  • Vibrant graphics and clever overall style
  • A fantastic player character

  • Gunplay is inconsistent and sometimes clunky
  • Trap-based defense missions feel entirely needless
  • Some hit-or-miss moments of sophomoric humor

That was just a small patch to please consumers for now. The big patch comes in either November or January.

I don't think you're miss much if you only play MC. The online issues are still a problem for some.

Want to save even more money on the Xbox One, which will already see its price go down to as far as $349 starting November 2? Then all you have to do is sign up for a text message deal that will offer up a 5 percent coupon for most anything on the Microsoft Store website.

Basically, you can sign up on Microsoft's promo page to get text messages from their retail store division to get the code for the 5 percent discount, or you can text 'Play' to 29502 to get the same thing. It appears that the Surface Pro 3 is the only product that is ineligible for this offer. Also, keep in mind that the Xbox One discount might be available in limited quantities.

The upshot of all of this is that starting November 2, you could in theory get an Xbox One with a free game like Sunset Overdrive for as low as $332.50 from the Microsoft Store website. Will you use the coupon for an Xbox One discount?

From the get-go, Sledgehammer Games co-founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey knew that the key to changing up Call of Duty’s gameplay and freshening things up for their late 2014 release lied in the Exo Suit.

As the first ideas for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare — codenamed “Blacksmith” in its early stages – sprung to life in 2011, the duo conceptualized a mechanical or exoskeleton suit that would dramatically enhance the way a player navigates, essentially re-writing the way Call of Duty plays, at least in terms of basic movement.

While that idea was clear from the beginning, the suit itself underwent a number of iterations, and in a recent cover story from Polygon, we finally get to see what some of these early concepts looked like.

Below is a round of of some of the concept art presented to Polygon by the studio — some of it from Sledgehammer’s art team and some of it from studio co-founder Glen Schofield.

Have a look and drop a comment in the comment section below! Do you think the Exo Suit is driving Call of Duty’s gameplay in the right direction? What do you think Treyarch and Infinity Ward’s answers will be to Sledgehammer’s new idea?

You read that right, $250. Here's how it works: from November 2nd to January 3rd a new Xbox One without Kinect will be $350. To get an additional $100 off, you can trade in a working Xbox 360 or PS3 into the Microsoft Store. Then boom, $250 Xbox One. The Assassin's Creed Unity, Sunset Overdrive and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare bundles are eligible for this deal. So is the Xbox One with Kinect. Here are the systems that qualify for the trade in.

There will also be a bounty of content for all players, new and returning, to discover - including a fleet of classic GTA vehicles and a few more surprises we've got planned that you’ll have to discover for yourself come game day. And as previously announced, current GTA Online players on PS3 and Xbox 360 will be able to pick up where they left off, transferring their characters and progression seamlessly to their choice of PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC (Social Club membership required).

actual_1414503330.jpg

In addition, anyone who pre-orders the game will receive a bonus of GTA$1M ($500k for Story Mode and $500k for use in Grand Theft Auto Online). We’ve also received tons of great questions from excited fans about what's in store for the game. Below are some of the more frequent ones we've gotten that we're able to shed a little light on – and stay tuned for more info in the coming weeks. Remember, you can always send us your questions at mouthoff@rockstargames.com, or shoot us a tweet at @RockstarGames. If you've got feedback about what you'd like to see in GTA Online specifically, don't hesitate to drop our dev team a line at gtaonline@rockstargames.com.

What about the exclusive in-game content I originally received for purchasing the PS3 or Xbox 360 Special Edition or Collectors Edition last year? Will I be able to access that content on PS4, Xbox One or PC?

Yes, if you purchased the Special Edition or the Collector’s Edition last year, when you upgrade to one of the new systems, you will automatically have those items unlocked and accessible. Those in-game bonuses include the Stunt Plane Trials, Bonus Outfits and Tattoos, and the Pistol .50, Bullpup Shotgun and melee Hammer all for Story Mode use; as well as the Custom Classic GTA Parent Characters and the high-end Khamelion electric car for GTA Online. Furthermore, if you missed out on your chance to buy a CE or SE the last time around, we will also make all of that content available for all players on PS4, Xbox One and PC to earn and acquire with in-game cash (original SE and CE owners will not have to spend any in-game cash to obtain them, they will automatically be accessible upon upgrade).

Can you only make the GTA Online character progress transfer once?
If I transfer my GTA Online character to the new systems, will I still be able to play with him/her on my PS3 or Xbox 360?

Yes, you will only be able to transfer your character once. After transferring your character to PS4, Xbox One or PC, you can continue playing with him/her on your PS3 or Xbox 360 but the progress you make while playing is not shared to the character you transferred to your new version.

Will PC players also receive the exclusive upgrade content like the Dodo and Dukes?

Yes indeed! The content detailed above will be available to returning players on all three new platforms.

Will any of these updates being made for the new systems be also made available for the previous generation of consoles?

The vastly enhanced graphics and many other gameplay updates on the new versions of Grand Theft Auto V are really only made possible by virtue of the powerful new hardware of the new consoles and PC. Some of the other updates such as the upgrade content detailed above are being designed exclusively as a reward for returning players so those will not be released on the previous versions; however do stay tuned for more updates to be made available for Grand Theft Auto Online across all platforms and we’ll have more information on that soon.

Will my created Jobs transfer over to the new systems?

Yes, any Jobs you’ve published in GTA Online using the Creator tool will transfer over so that you and others can continue playing them on the new platforms. Please be aware however that Leaderboards, Snapmatics, Playlists and bookmarks are unique to the console generation you made them on so those will not carry over. (GTAV photographers should get ready to take all-new high-res Snapmatics!)

Will 30-person GTA Online sessions include competitive modes such as Races and Deathmatches?

Yes, they will! GTA Online on the new systems will support 30 players not just in Free Roam but in competitive modes as well (unless of course the Job you’re playing has been designed to be set to a specifically lower player max). We look forward to seeing what unique matches the community can create for a vastly increased number of players.

We know there’s many other questions players have about the new releases as well so please stay tuned for more information to come in the weeks ahead.

During its financial conference call for investors on the second fiscal quarter of 2015, Electronic Arts just announced that the EA access on Xbox One is being considered a success by the company.
We’re seeing both empyrical and anecdotal data that people that are now members of EA access, have access to games like FIFA and Madden, which says that ordinarily they wouldn’t have gone out and bought them, are now experiencing them and enjoying them and I believe that the next time around when the games will launch they will actually buy them.

It’s turning into an incredible sampling program for us, if you will. Obviously the value for many users is there.
As regards to the Sony question nothing to talk about right now on that, but I will say that EA Access is surpassing all of our internal expectations in regards to subscriber numbers.
Will the success of the program push Sony to reconsider it and maybe other publishers to implement similar services? Only time will tell, but for now it definitely seems that EA Access is working well for Electronic Arts itself.

The next Battlefield game, the cops and robbers-themed Battlefield Hardline, will be released March 17, 2015 in North America, publisher Electronic Arts announced today.
Europe will get Battlefield Hardline two days later on March 19. The game is coming to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Originally, EA and developer Visceral Games planned to release Battlefield Hardline this past week, on Oct. 21. The game was delayed to 2015 in July after feedback from the game's beta prompted DICE and Visceral to "push Hardline innovation further and make the game even better," Karl Magnus Troedsson, DICE vice president and group GM, said at the time.

Troedsson said that the teams at Visceral and DICE wanted to focus more on multiplayer innovation and incorporate "ideas direct from the community that will evolve the cops and criminals fantasy into a truly unique Battlefield Multiplayer experience."

The extra time will also help polish the game's technical aspects, the developer said. Ian Milham, creative director on Battlefield Hardline, says the game will work — unlike other Battlefield titles, which have had rough launches — when it releases early next year.
