Rihanna's injuries were way more severe, but the lack of video evidence of the altercation, combined with the pervasive notion that Rihanna struck Brown first in a way justified the whole thing to some extent has allowed Brown to be able to move on, whereas Ray Rice will never be able to rehabilitate his career after this.

Judging from the video I don't think there was too much going on beforehand to warrant his actions. I just think that liquor started talking to Ray. She seemed to be semi calm until Ray put his hands back on her or spit on her a 2nd time. That little swat she did at the beginning wasn't more than a love tap and she just kept it moving.
